Fixing the Broken Window Regulator Mounts on my BMW Z3

  • My plan to pay more for a car with less problems didn't exactly pan out. It leaked like a sieve, the windows were slow to move or just wouldn't, and the convertible top is trash. I guess this is what I get for not shopping around.
If you're here for instructions: I fixed the sheet metal by welding in a replacement mount. If you don't have a welder, you can still replace that stud on the tube inside the door like I did. Chances are yours is broken as well.

that stupid mount is broken on mine too, thanks for the insight. I appreciated the brutal honesty of how frustrating working on cars can be.

The ending was hilarious 😂 my mount is broken too and was previously repaired by the dealership who did a much less impressive repair job than yourself

Glad you "safely" deactivated that airbag! I never want one going off right at my shoulder or face!

@Marco Lucas Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.

Love your dry sarcastic narration. Goes well. Just did this job on my '01. Pretty much identical failure. I basically did the same exact thing as you for the stud. I used a piece of steel from the belt tensioner of an old Subaru. 1/4" thick I think and welded studs. GREAT idea. Thankfully there were no botched repair jobs to deal with for me. Instead of replacing the cracked bracket by cutting out of the door I instead drilled out the spot welds, repaired the bracket, welded m10 studs on it to replace the spot welds and then put it back. Couldn't really replicate the spot welds cuz all I got is a flux core. Not quite as good a repair as yours because while I welded the bracket up strong, it's not quite bent back to where it was as stock, so it was a bit tough to get all four studs to line up on the regulator. We'll see how it holds, for now it works perfect. Thanks for the detailed video.

Glad I came across this. My z3 has all mounting studs broken too for that window. Looks like I'll be getting a new door and doing the same thing.

been trying to find a solution to this for over a year! thank you! I just have one question: where can I find a rectangular piece of metal like the one you used to replace the original bracket?

You'll probably have to get a three foot length from a hardware store. The one I used was 1/4" x 1 1/4" flat bar

This is exactly the fix that I have been looking for. If you could engineer that stud and mass market it, you could probably make some money doing so, as anyone that owns one of these cars will most likely need at least one if not the two at some point in time.

metal work is fun! but no one likes working inside cramped quarters. nice job.
tip on electrical cables...when you need to splice multiple conductors, if all of the individual conductors are cut to the dame length, the splices all sit next to each other and make a big lump. space may not allow. harder to crimp, solder, shrink, tape.... So, stagger the lengths of each conductor to spread the bump out over the length of the joint.

I came here for the window regulator broken post....genius solution, why the hell didn't I think to use the two available holes!.. I was going to use metal putty but that bracket looks way better..

Dang I had to go through all that 😂. I replaced the entire airbag system when my driveshaft blew up. I replaced the window regulator with a used one, but the door was never the same after it was welded. I couldn’t even line up the small window and now the car leaks more. Love the car, but hate the stupid window regulators and door design.

What kind of metal is the door ? What kind of welding did you use ? Having the same problem .

    • @THEFACILITY

It's just plain carbon steel, MIG or TIG welding will do

Hard telling since the other one doesn't work the best either, but it seems pretty good
