God it does reward skillful play. It’s based on elemental damage checks. Meaning that 1) You have to go out of your comfort zone (for some people) and have a decent elemental weapon (what a surprise. 2) remember that flinch shots exist, those will go a long way to help you get in the damage you need and hopefully break off the horns. 3) This is a Black Dragon, lore wise that means he takes out all elders like it’s nothing. It’s supposed to be a hard fight, that’s why it’s Post Safi recon.
I expect the nutshell animation to just be a snippet of Alatreon judging (carting) a group of hunters followed by them being back in the Gathering Hub weeping in a corner while the Handler and Commander Jr. constantly telling them about elemental weapons

I felt it was only appropriate that I use the weapon that game introduced (Switch Axe) to take him down. Nostalgia sharpened my blade and my senses, and I wrecked his shit
I found that the only way to play with randoms reliably is to be that guy with max wide range, max eating speed and max free meal. Downside is 95% of the time when you're one hit away from dying, nobody notices until it's too late.

I actually think I have a working plan for this bastard Before departing on the quest, use a gourmet voucher and select the "Open Road" meal. Then make sure your Palico has maxed out healing gear. Depart on the quest solo to loose the risk of your teammates fainting as well as decrease monsters difficulty (even if it's by a little bit). When you're in the quest it's only a matter of avoiding attacks and not carting, when it does it's ultimate attack, sacrifice 1 of your faints and when you get back to camp, wether you're inventory's full or not, restock on supplies. Also mantles are in the game for a reason, use them
Make sure you preserve your faints, seeing as forecasters dont work, faints are your only way to get back to camp to switch from ice to fire or vice versa when he changes elements. You can mitigate having to use a faint if you break a horn and hit the element damage cap, weakening the judgement and stopping him from switching to ice from fire or vice versa. My best recommendation is use a weapon that is ridiculously high on element damage, ex. kjarr charge blade or insect glaive
