  • Today I learned how fast UV (ultraviolet) resin can cure and harden in direct sunlight. I was having difficulty getting this UV resin to harden and cure with my 395 nanometer UV LED flashlight last night only when I mixed a lot of translucent blue dye in the UV resin.
However, I learned that the direct sunlight of summertime, will almost instantly thicken this UV resin and harden it within 30 seconds, definitely solid in 60 seconds only in direct sunlight.
WOW!! That was fast curing. Fast enough to allow this resin to harden while I was moving this sink around to get the UV resin to evenly cover the surface. I found that you can make ocean waves by sloshing around the UV resin, even with a lot of blue dye in it, in the direct summertime sunlight. The resin will harden this fast.
I think I am past the really difficult part of the project, which was creating the ocean on this tropical beach sink topper. This is taking forever to finish alone. I'm learning as I go. Luckily, I got more resin to work with, but it's regular AB epoxy resin.
By the way, this sand is a mixture of about three parts of white sand with one part of light brown sand from Hobby Lobby, with gold glitter mixed in. The manager of the El Maguey Mexican Restaurant in Salem Indiana, along with the owner, are eagerly awaiting the completion of this sink for their restaurant.
It's taking forever because of the AB (binary) epoxy resin taking up to three days to cure. I also got to think things through to make my dream of a tropical beach scenery as a sink in one of my most favorite restaurants, into a reality.
This is the UV resin that I used to make the ocean in this video.
