We were students and very short of money when our children were young. As far as food goes, I had to run a very tight ship. I planned our menus down to every meal, snack, and accounted for even the smallest ingredients and stretched every penny. My children always had snacks available. They had three healthy meals every single day. They did not, however, have free reign of the kitchen. Ingredients for planned meals and snacks such as baking were completely off-limits. There's no need to allow children to eat whatever they want any time they feel a bit hungry. In my opinion, that's actually a perfect recipe for creating fussy eaters. A small, healthy snack will carry them to their next meal without ruining their appetites.
I agree 💯 I didn’t really with hold food per se but I knew what not to let my daughter freely eat or we wouldn’t have it for a meal later. I only had one child thank goodness bc we couldn’t have fed more than that bc we were very poor. I made good meals but food was very limited even though I always worked we received food stamps until after I graduated nursing school!! Oh how I remember that first big check I got I went wild in the grocery store ❤
I grew up poor and my Dad refused help with food because his pride got in the way. We were fortunate enough to have neighbors who would drop off boxes of apples or excess of food grown on their farms. This was a blessing. There are so many people that need help because the prices of everything has gone up. I volunteer at a food pantry and our numbers have gone up drastically. If anyone needs help, please go to the pantrys. Helping others is my calling and makes my heart so happy when I can make a difference in someones life.
Yes I agree! We work / volunteer with our food pantry as well. Thankfully even though numbers are higher it seems that they are blessed by grocery store day old stuff. Another challenge is people not knowing how to prepare those things. I am seeing a lot of what your dad did happen. It’s so sad for the mommas who are trying to make it stretch.
The problem today is that parents don't know how to scratch cook. Convenience food is extremely expensive and not good for you. We were very poor, but we ate well. Both my parents worked, a lot. But they did it. Casseroles, stews, bread, egg salad, tuna salad, we didn't go hungry. There were a few really bad times. Please food is getting very high. Put away staple items for Hard times. Go ty food pantries. You'll be glad you did. Blessings
Exactly and I think it’s a crying shame that they don’t. I truly believe most are a little lazy! I know even when I worked I still put nutritional meals in the table, I utilized a crockpot or did reading of women’s magazines for recipes etc. occasionally we did go out to eat or order a pizza.
When I grew up in the 50's and 60's I remember having spagetti and pasta 4-5 times a week. Sometimes we would have meatballs with it but most times not. If we went to my aunts house Usually Saturday night for dinner, we would always have spagetti and sausage. I always looked forward to going there to get a small piece of sausage. We only had salad with our meal when we went to my aunts. We had canned soup for dinner or grilled cheese sometimes. Summertime meant we might get hotdogs and hamburgers on the grill if the family was coming for dinner. ( Maybe 2-3 times over the summer) we only had beef maybe once a month. When I got married we always had a variety of differnt foods and my kids always got plenty to eat. I had 6 kids. Not as many as you but still enough when counting pennies. I always shopped using MANY MANY coupons to afford groceries to feed us. Sometimes my coupons would take off 75% of the bill or more. Wish the stores would still honor coupons like they use to and one day a week was double coupons. To this day i frown on spagetti or pasta with red sauce.
My granddaddy said I ate enough for 10 farmers. I thought he worked me like ten farmers. I learned how to work a farm and fields from his 140 acres miss it Blessed to grow and can my on food.
Aww yes somedays I think wow where do they put it all! But when you are working hard you get hungry so fill them up. Sounds like you had a great granddaddy!
I don’t think people realize how much money they could save by making meals from whole foods from scratch. They are to “busy” or it’s easier to make prepackaged foods like frozen chicken tenders and boxed macaroni and cheese. If people would take the time to learn how to make from scratch meals not only would they find there is more to go around for less or about the same price, because the meals are nutritious and balanced, their entire family would be able to eat enough to fill up, but they would be healthier all the way around. I started down the whole food road 2 years ago. I didn’t know how it would change our lives. I just knew it would save money. Not only was I able to cut my food budget while providing more food, my husband has been able to lower his insulin and his diabetes medication (he is type 2), his high cholesterol medication and his blood pressure medication. We have both lost weight and my body has shifted shape. Iam more balanced in my hips, waste, and chest. It’s been amazing how much change has come from a decision to learn how to cook from scratch. I now make 100% of our bread products including tortillas, and I make 90% of our food from scratch. I do keep frozen chicken patties (1 bag from Sam’s) and chicken nuggets (1 bag from Sam’s) on hand for nights I end up working later than I planned in order to get food on the table before 9pm. The few times I do this is a better option than eating around 9pm and then going straight to bed, in my opinion. I agree with 100% of what you’ve said in this video. I’m so glad you have chosen to speak the hard truths that need to be spoken even though you get backlash from it. Keep moving forward. I pray you keep up the work you have so whole heartedly taken on. The truth around food, government and politics. Thank you!! People need to hear these things. Even if they don’t want to hear it because it causes them to be uncomfortable and question some of the things they have been programmed to believe. I can’t believe you have come across threads where people are limiting the meals their children are eating. Especially when a good majority of them could probably cut off their cable, downsize their cars to lower payments or to get rid of payments, choose to thrift instead of purchasing at full price, doing without some of the extras like getting nails done, not eating out or a host of other choices instead of limiting meals. That is insane to me. My heart is breaking for these children.
Sadly we do live in a world where people don't know how to cook, they don't know how to take simple staple foods and make numerous meals. My family was not rich, my parents worked very hard but we always had the basic foods, potatoes, carrots, meat etc. My grandmother made bread and baked beans. We were just taught how to cook, today they are not taught how to cook so if it doesn't come out of a box or can they don't know what to do.
Just want to say for people viewing this to watch all the way to the end and watch at least 30 seconds of the commercial for Mama Bear to get full RUclips credit. Like and subscribe, but at least like and comment - but if you can, please subscribe as well. I’d like for Mama Bear to be able to be blessed. ❤ She works hard putting these videos out and has great content. She’s not pretentious like so many other channels. She’s real. We can all relate - well maybe we can’t relate to having that many children but we can relate to real life and things we can do to make our homes better for our families. Mama Bear, I hope you don’t mind this comment of encouraging others to support your channel.
I grew up learning not to waste food. And to clean my plate. In the 50s we were told that Korean kids were starving. I admire you for all the food prep you do! You are such a wonderful person. ❤
I’m 72 and your philosophy on food is how my parents raised me and how I was able to feed my family.i was blessed with the financial means not to limit my Children’s food consumption at meal time.one of mt children was extremely thin and had and his stomach was a bottomless pit.i never limited his food.he would get visibly sick if he went a couple hours without eating.your a very sensible mother.
When I make tacos I always shred zucchini , carrots and sometimes potatoes into the meat and seasoning, it makes really hearty tacos and tastes the same as plain meat. I don't need to budget groceries, I just prefer not to eat so much meat.
I don’t know how to cook. And my taste is starting to go a little, but I don’t eat a lot because I always want my kids to eat. I don’t worry about myself. And sometimes I know with my eating disorder I’m not truly hungry I just see the food. My dad and grandma had us on a strict eating schedule and didn’t let me eat so I went to bed hungry. My moms mom abused her and she went to bed hungry almost every day. So she would wake us at 2am if we didn’t eat. And now I always let my kids eat if they are hungry. Sadly I’m not a great example for my kids I eat 24/7 so they think they can too. Eating is my comfort and I feel bad it’s becoming what my toddlers do too. I do tell them snack is healthy and dessert is a sweet treat. Which is only 2 times a month. I don’t think it’s appropriate for 1 and a 3 yr old to have a lot of sugar and salt. It sucks because the cheap stuff is always unhealthy and the healthy stuff costs way more
Hugs I definitely can feel you in this. What we grow up as has a huge influence in who we are. It’s really hard to break. But it sound like you are doing your best!
I would have taken that pound of hamburger and made a huge pot of chili with several cans of black and chili beans. Pennies per serving. Also, if you have some cornmeal, cornbread is really easy to make, easier that even having a boxed mix. And speaking of food banks, I used to work at a local service that helped families with groceries and utilities. It's a good idea if you do decide to visit one of those places to ask if they might currently know of a local free cooking class. Many teach great skills on how to stretch a dollar, have free childcare available, and at least in my day all the ingredients used in the recipes get sent home with the participants.
I remember at gmas she raised me for the most part so my childhood most of it was spent at gmas house There were 4 kids and 5 adults for every main meal and breakfast in a 3 bedroom trailer We had more bodies/ people than beds or bedrooms The main thing I remember is being told to clean your plates because we didn't know how hard that food was worked for and starving kids in not only Ethiopia but maybe many of our friends didn't have have dinners like ours or plenty to eat I remember the 2 or 3 days I was at mothers being hungry all the time bebecame she did not keep food I had grown accustomed to eating at gmas good healthy food instead of junk or the foid was spoiled like the time I ate mashed potatoes made with bad milk that caused me to be ill for 3 days Gma would always say here eat the last piece of chicken finish up the potatoes so well have room in the fridge then at hedtime before bed my aunt would pas out the cookie or candy tin and we could have 2 pieces sometimes on weekends when CBS I think played the Disney movie special we'd get a fat bowl of ice cream Breakfast usually consisted of unsweetened rice krispies chex cornflakes or honey nut cheerios On weekends we could have a bagel or English muffin they were easier to eat outside while waiting for Sunday school bus and Saturdays if we didn't make pancakes or corn fritters we could have some of our sweetened cereal no more than 2 bowls though and we weren't allowed to be careless with the milk half a cup each bowl and that was it Also when we came home from Sunday school lunch was smorgasbord day which means cleaning out all the leftover and trying to eat them up because my gma and aunt were grocery shopping and needed room for the new groceries
Only one lb of meat for tacos? Make taco bowls! Put some rice and black beans add your meat, cheese etc. eat the tacos along with it or crumble on the top!
I've started buying bulk produce from the farmers markets to can or freeze. Before I process it I'll ask some of the family if they need any. My husband and I got married in the recession and struggled for many years with money because of lay offs and plants closing. Family and government assistance carried us through. It took a long time before we finally made enough to catch up on bills and pay off our family debts. We would always ask to borrow money for years but I don't think anyone ever expected us to pay it back. We finally were able too in their time of need and they cried. We are now better off than the family members that helped us over the years so I am trying to pay back their generosity as we can.
Grew up middle class. Dad was a skilled tradesman, mom stayed home and cared for us four children.I don’t remember having many snacks in the house except fruit. We ate cold boxed cereal in the morning. Mom packed our school lunches of sandwiches and fruit. Hot school lunches were not free in the sixties, so buying lunch was maybe once a week. Mom made a homemade dinner every night. We ate what she served and didn’t complain because we were hungry at dinner time. As our father made more money, we would go out for fish and chips once a week.
i raised my kids like i was raised..we had a breakfast lunch was at school and a dinner at 5pm exactly...our plate was fixed by our mom and you got 1 plate, but it was enough that you didn't need a 2nd serving...and you ate what was cooked, no fast convenient food..mom only knew how to bake 1 flavor of cookie (oatmeal raisin or oatmeal chocolate chip) we had 1 serving meat 1 serving of veggies or salad(garden season) usually applesauce or chilled canned fruit and a butter bread...we never went to bed hungry for lack of food. we were blessed that way.
I eat a lot of sour kraut. I learned this recipe from another utuber. For 1 qt of shredded cabbage, you add a teaspoon of pickling salt to the bottom, stuff cabbage in as tight as you can, then add another teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of sugar. Fill jar with room temp water and put lid and ring on tight. Put something out of the sun to ferment. It's usually done in about a week you can let it go longer if you want it more sour. You can refrigerate it or store it in a celler like that without heating it. You know that that would kill the probiotics. I've been fermenting it for awhile and love it❤
I am 59, my kids are grown but I do have grandkids. I was raised like you raise your kids and my kids were raised the same way. However, my grandkids have not been raised the s ame way. My daughter struggles to feed her kids and I just shake my head and harp on what she feeds them and she says they won't eat anything else. I say bull, if they have no other options, they will eat it. It may take them a few days, but they will eat it, they do at my house. LOL. Shrugs. I can, I freeze, I dehydrate...my son still lives at home and he, my husband, and myself eat real food and we eat well on at budget. We may not grow it all, but we do buy it from local farmers or buy whole real foods from the grocery. By the way, i just recently found your channel and I love watching it because it reminds me so much of days gone by for me and how I was raised.... I can appreciate your lifestyle.
When we 8 kids at home, we stretched meals at times with beans, Rice, veggies. We also did the same with snacks aa you do. We often made granola, no bake peanutbutter oatmeal cocoa bars, or penutbutter oatmeal rasin cookies or fresh fruit, etc. We also drank water. Humans aren't designed to digest animal milk. We did keffer "milk" before it was " fashionable " ❤❤❤ I love love your take on getting help I'd you need it, foodstamps. Wic is designed to help
My grandpa made a refrigerator- clean -out "Stew" once a week. Whatever was left over went in the pot with Chicken broth or tomato sauce and he tweaked it with spices . Also, his specialty was Chili. He always made a pot of rice to make it go further. We were always full.
I have a thing about food. I am older so food is not a big deal like it was as a kid. I am from a large family and my parents worked hard. But we were always Hungary. I used to wait for my dad to come home on Saturdays because I know exactly what he was bringing home. Baloney, bread and rolls. But it was food anyway. The rest of the week was hit and miss. So I made sure my kids had food when they were home. To this day I still worry when food is low. I know how it feels to go to bed hungry … life was hard and I hate to think of kids suffering in that way. Now it isn’t just the poor. We pay double for less, they make the portions smaller and the prices higher. I really don’t understand how people do it now.
I grew up poor, to this day I cannot stand macaroni with tomatoes I'm 57 now. For many years I couldn't eat beans, cornbread. Yet, my Granny grew a 2 acre garden every year. Raised chicken, rabbits.. I understand being hungry, but my children never were.
I agree with you. I am a Walmart personal shopper and seeing how people choose to spend their money on only processed foods is sad. It’s so expensive and doesn’t fill the tummies with good food. I don’t believe in setting up a battle over food either. I just don’t have the more expensive processed options in the house. The kids can choose something else but I’m not cooking it for you.
When my kids were small I limited their sugar intake and soda intake. I always had fresh fruit and vegetables prepared for them to eat anytime they were hungry but I also made 3 meals a day. I worked a 40 hour week so on the weekends I would prepare 3 or 4 meals for the week and make up several breakfast meals and freeze them so it made easy breakfast during the week and every morning I would pack their lunch for school. I would pack a sandwich or leftovers along with a fruit a vegetable yogurt chips and a drink. When I did the grocery shopping I would get home and wash and prep the vegetables so it was easy for them to get a snack.
My mother didn't cook- I grew up not eating veggies and a very limited menu. I learned how to cook by being put on hospital bed rest with my twins for 17 weeks and 2 days. I ran out of books and was bored out of my mind and started watching the cooking/food network as I hate tv and couldn't find anything else interesting 😂. I began trying and experimenting. I started getting recipe books at the libarary and yard sales and thrift stores. I found something I loved and began helping my husbands grandma in her garden. Fast forward 18 years next month and we relocated to NW Arkansas from Washington state to begin this homesteading journey. Even growing food we are struggling with buying groceries. Ground beef from Walmart is almost $9 a pound!! I haven't bought beef in six months. We are currently raising our first batch of meat birds and we just let the rabbits mate so hopefully that will go well. I don't know how people on assistance are surviving right now- the cost of food is so outrageous and I know there hasn't been an increase to compensate this huge rise in costs... yikes! Looking forward to soup season!!!! Soups and homemade bread bowls are my favorite time of year😂❤
Between my mil and bil living together they get almost $300 a month food stamps and my niece with her husband and 3 kids got $900 a month food stamps..seems to me most people get a nice amount of food stamps, it’s more than I can afford to pay for my hubby and myself!
Times are hard. People are working and still struggling. People need to help each other. Food banks are tossing food because there are not enough people coming to get it.
I have an eating disorder that stems from my mom always working and had to make what was convenient. Sometimes she cooked but a lot of it was processed. My grandma tried to get me to eat healthier but I hated that kind of food after being with my mom so long. I don’t have many memories of cooking with my mom because of all the abuse sadly, so when I go get food from the food pantries I don’t know how to cook food that is pantry staples or veggies in a tin. Or any tinned food. It’s like my mind can’t figure out how to make stuff from scratch then I’m scared I will mess up a recipe and I won’t like it. I struggle with the textures of stuff so most processed foods are my safe foods and sadly the cheapest. I do spend extra so that my kids can eat healthy but I suffer because it’s never enough left of it for me to have so I’m left with the processed stuff. Daycare for my youngest is the only reason I’m stuck on welfare 😢. Gonna try to do college so I can get a better job. I hate the texture and taste of a lot of fruits and veggies esp peppers, and onions. Wish I knew how to cook well enough so I could make something tasty and healthy
@@mommabear2many I am a self taught cook as well! You can do it! It is really trial and error find things you already like and recreate them fresher! Also butter is your friend when homecooking! LORD JESUS guide
If you want to learn how to cook watch q bunch of youtube videos. Dont say I wish! Just decide to do it. Cooking is Not hard. It can be learned easily on RUclips and with a few months you can become a good cooks. Its not like you are stuck and cant do this. I have a friend who for years fed her husband and kids processed food saying she couldnt cook. She was a stay at home mom . He husband developed a horrible cancer and died far to soon. Dont be lazy with your families health. Learn to cook.
As a child we learnt not to waste food and clear our plates. We had good filling homemade meals .If there was any waste it went to the chickens. We only drank water and we made our own lemonade. We did get clothe and shoes stamps to help as my father worked hard but at times we needed help and my mother was so thankful. Blessings to you all❤
Each child is different in food consumption because their metabolic rate is different. I had two that didn’t eat much and stayed thin. My middle was always hungry and he ate when he needed to. He is 42 now and still eats and is not overweight. If children eat at regular scheduled meals and have plenty, they only need a small healthy snack most times. When children don’t eat nutritionally healthy foods at meals, they will want to snack on junk.
This is such a good video as many people don’t know how or what to cook for their family. I had well balanced meals growing up - fresh veggies from the garden - fruits for snacks after school - also peanut butter and jelly toast after school - cream of wheat, oatmeal, cereal, or eggs for breakfast - home canned fruit for dessert. But no snacking otherwise between meals - a treat of ice cream Sat night and a dessert on Sunday. I raised my kids the same way and I was on a strict budget but even when times weren’t as tough I didn’t change my grocery spending practices. Popcorn has always been a go to and traveling snack as well as Sun night with pizza. We did occasionally have other snacks for a treat but it was not a daily occurrence and the kids could never help themselves. I limited meat to one serving but everything else like veggies was as much as I cooked for the meal. I often made extras for another meal - like potato patties out of mashed potatoes. We did drink milk. Growing up we had a cow but I purchased milk when my kids were young. In the NT times there was a famine and Paul requested money for the churches who were in need. Food pantries are such a way that some churches provide for the needy. In our society government help is set up based on need and many times there is that need - even for children of parents who do not work so the no work no eat rule doesn’t take into account that children need nourishment. Wic is also an option for those with children.
I love hearing about your experience with food shortages. My mother grew up during the depression and food was in short supply. When she married my dad and had us kids she made sure we had plenty to eat. There was always a bowl of fresh fruit and vegetables we were allowed to eat anything from that bowl. One thing we never did was waste anything. Love your channel.❤
I mostly ration snacks. I buy food to last 2 weeks till the next pay. If I let them have freedom over snacks they will be gone in 3 days because they'll just eat it all day. The only time I ration a meal is if I didn't make as much as I thought it would be. I make sure everyone gets some, then if there is any left they can have more or fine something else to eat if they're still hungry. The one time I made spaghetti using a different kind of noodle and it didn't go as far as the pasta I usually make. What was supposed to feed 6 only ended up feeding 3 since my oldest had a heaping plate. Since dinner fell short I ended up making waffles for everyone. Sometimes you may have to get a little creative.
I only limit things like crisps (chips) and chocolate biscuits that I buy to have in the packed lunch we take once a week , if my children get hungry between meals they can have yogurt and fruit
Scratch cooking. Oatmeal, sneak in egg and sweeten with maple syrup, whole wheat pasta,, tuna, flour, sugar yeast and a bread machine, sourdough, all the things you are growing fill the belly. FARMHOUSE ON BOONE WHAT A CHANNEL TO FOLLOW FOR IDEAS! I go early in the morning and buy the marked down meat. Chili over potatoes.
I grew up on a farm, we had milk, cows, pigs, cows, chicken, and a garden. My mom grew the vegetables and fruits. We had fruit trees my mom buy stuff from the grocery much. I don’t think I ever had a soda until I was almost in high school. We drink water but if we one just snack, we could have, an apple or strawberries something like that that came out of the garden but we had seasonal vegetables mama canned food. we did not get soda or potato chips or candy bars or anything like that. I say I don’t remember getting a soda or even knew what it was until I was I think almost in high school had plenty of food. My mom cooked a lot of soup beans. She had soup beans, almost every day with the food, cornbread or biscuits
Growing up, (im the youngest of 8 kids), my mom made our plates up with a good meal, we were expected to eat it...we were glad to eat it because mom could cook real well, but if we asked for seconds we better eat every bite or we had to sit there til food was gone. We had a garden, accepted food from churches, had government food, and my dad worked three jobs to support the ten of us. This proves that large families dont need food stamps.
my mom would buy hostess cupcakes ( the 3 pack) they had them back then, and she would tell me there is breakfast lunch and dinner, i liked going to school because i could have breakfast and lunch at school and i dreaded vacations and weekends from school because there was no food at home
Hi Mama Bear it's so nice to see you I love your videos God bless you and your beautiful family you're an amazing mom and amazing amazing person and wife fiorella from Canada 🇨🇦❤
I can remember crying with hunger because I grew up with a mum that prioritised cigarettes rather than food. But as a result I now try to grow my food it's not much but I try and my cupboards are full. We cook well and on a tight budget. To stretch meet, we add lots of shredded veg, and it works. This is why I enjoy channels like this for ideas.
This breaks my heart to hear of children going hungry. We do need to learn to cook again. I do cook daily, always have. Many pre packaged foods are full of empty carbs and sugars. Unfortunately, they don't fill us up. Natural food is the way to go!
SO smart to incorporate fermented foods, imho~ seriously good for the body, digestion, etc. Your family is blessed to have a momma/ home manager so focused on their nutrition & well being. So many ways we can set them up for a strong, healthy, intelligent life well into adulthood~ including best practices for budget & such. Love that you included some conversation on accepting help, cultural & societal differences & how we process our thoughts on the false economy/system we live in. Critical considerations, imho~ especially "praying over" such decisions. I love making our own ice cream. I use whole, raw milk or heavy cream, egg yolks, vanilla, allulose (a rare sugar the body doesn't digest), or 100% monk fruit- NOT the erythritol "blend" that advertises as being "Monk Fruit Sweetener"- because it's really 99% erythritol & only 1% monk fruit. Allulose or 100% monk fruit are my favorite for both taste & texture. My husband's the main ice cream hound in our family, so I make a lot of butter pecan or plain vanilla. *Erythritol can crystalize, which changes the texture- some people are fine w/that. I know many have good results using sucralose as well. As for a store bought ice cream your Sweet Pea may like, we've tried nearly every single sugar free one on the market, over the years. I have learned the higher the fat content, the lower even the natural sugars will be, which makes sense- less lactose. "Breyer's Carb Smart" is decent, though my husband now prefers the "Signature Select" line, available at Albertson's/Safeway/ Von's/Shaw's stores~ all now owned by Albertson's btw. His other favorite is the organic, "Simple Truth" brand, sold at Fry's/Krogers/Smith's chain of grocery store's. "Blue Bell" also makes a "no sugar added" vanilla ice cream which is really good. None of these are as clean as homemade of course, since they usually have either maltitol or sorbitol- sometimes in addition to a better sweetener like allulose or erythritol. I figure it's fine, unless a person is sitting down & scarfing an entire carton~ which Danny has learned his (gastro) lesson on- yikes! I doubt your precious girl has that kind of an appetite, & you know her needs best anyhow. =) Ok, another an essay length comment later~ sheesh! Just wanted to share that info. May your efforts be blessed MBSammy in AZ
Hearing you describe meals when you grew up makes me think that may have been sort of a cultural norm of the 80s? I was an only child as well but we were middle class. I remember meals but nothing that seemed consistent or planned. Lots of quick stuff. It was like that at my of my friend's houses too regardless of income. At my grandparents house two doors down it WAS consistent and planned. Maybe this is why our generation is going back to the old ways?
Hello mamma bear, so sorry you had to go through tight times. From that you grew to a beautiful soul& a wonderful loving wife& mother. Your kids look happy& healthy. When you are in your 70's& disabled you really can't do alot physically.Food banks are in trouble as well. Help your elders/ neighbors,I do when I can.😊 You are raising your kids to help you& they won't be lazy later in life, they will appreciate. Have a blessed day.❤❤❤❤❤🙏
Yes true! A lot of food banks are working with local companies. We work with ours and also we make soap and donate as it’s not something people can get on food stamps. But I know my daughter helps them pick up day old stuff from grocery stores and such. But the pantry’s need good honest managers that look for resources. But we don’t live in a city so not sure what those areas are going through either.
I grew up extremely poor, and we would often be hungry, but we always had something even if it was only a slice of homemade bread with dripping. We were rationed as to what we could eat. When I married, my husband came from a more affluent household and I began hoarding food. My kids always had access to popcorn (I popped myself), fruit roll ups (dried fruit with corn starch to thicken it before being dried out in the oven, oatmeal crunchies (made with egg peanut butter and oats). They always had a variety of meals and had to eat all meals. Sometimes they would have leftovers as snacks. Now they are adults the still don’t eat junk, cook from scratch but they do not hoard foods. Recently since I’ve begun working with someone to tackle my general hoarding issues I’ve come to realise I hold onto stuff because for so long I never had anything. The church my mother attended would often drop off welfare boxes that my mother would have to hide as my father was too proud for charity.
@mommabear2many nibbling on candied ginger works well too. (If you can handle the flavor). Ginger wasn't my favorite taste, so I ate several saltines EVERY morning before ever sitting up. Kept a container on the night stand for easier start to the day. Be well. God bless. 🙏
I grew up on a subsistence style farm. We lived in a tar paper house with ourhouse. The roof leaked but we always had full bellies. To us, spaghetti was quite a treat because pasta was storebought. I didnt taste storebought bread until i was in 3rd grade when we went to visit my aunt and uncle who lived a little over an hour away. She made us deviled ham sandwiches for lunch. Didnt like the spread but i was fascinated by "air bread". Us kids were responsible for breakfast and lunch for ourselves and mom or our oldest sister fixed dinner which was hardy and plentiful. I remember many a time running out of the house to catch the bus, snagging a couple apples off the neighbors tree closest to the road since i was running too late to make a thick slice of toast slathered with homemade butter. There was no free lunch program at school so our most common lunch was jam sandwiches but we sometimes would have headcheese or sliced heart sandwiches. But other times i would resort to mustard sandwiches just because i was sick of jam sandwiches. The biggest thing concerning food in our household was moms rules. 1. You had to have some of everything served but we got to load our own plates UNLESS we complained. If you complained about the food mom would load your plate and what mom loaded you would eat. My mother was not one to suffer ungrateful children. There was only one time us kids banded together in revolt. When we would butcher hogs my mother always gave the brains to the neighbor who liked them scrambled with eggs. This particular butcher season they were spatting so she wasnt about to give them to him so shecooked them up for dinner. I still remember that texture. 🤢🤢🤮🤮. There was no discussion, we all revolted refusing to eat them and we won. I dont think mom liked them any more than we did.
It really depends it can save money but for a household like ours needing low carb meat is an excellent source of nutrition. Sometimes not getting enough nutrition causes our family to crave sugar and carbs.
@@mommabear2many definitely, I meant when you were talking about families not knowing how to cook and stretch meals! I think many people don't realize how vegetables can be used...
My boyfriends kids are so picky I cook a good meal ..it's doesn't look good to them or some excuse so he let's them fix ramen and snack cakes ...drives me crazy
I grew up and still live in Appalachia one thing that we have always had that goes along way is beans and corn bread. When you grew up in the hills you learn to make do and get by.
My heart breaks for you 💔. I never experienced anything like that. I grew up in a big family and my husband and I have 9 children. Growing up, we always had enough to eat and my husband and i never had to ration food.
I think we learned so much. I feel blessed to share with others. Honestly I’m seeing lots of momma struggling with this so it’s why I share hopefully to encourage another struggling momma.
Growing up we never had soda pop or chips. We ate cooked meals and simple menus. I think you need to change the word ration to portion control. I am raising a picky grand child. We serve her a wide variety and slowly she accepts new foods. There are many ways to boost nutrition. I can spot and shop seasonal sales. My husband used to hunt and that helped out greatly.
I grew up middle class but there were times I would say we were lower middle class. We only went on food stamps temporarily when my parents were struggling w money. We also got free lunch. When it came to food we were never kept from eating always getting atleast 3 meals a day ,but there wasn’t a lot xtra and we didn’t get snack foods regularly we got full well rounded dinners and we could get leftovers. We never went without but strangely I always felt kinda hungry, I attributed that to the fact I was growing. Even when we were ok financially my mom wasn’t one to buy snacks and as a kid I hated that. I always fry my hotdogs or grill them that’s the way my mom always cooks them.
As for not knowing how to do basic cooking?? Go to your local library & check out some books on teaching children or teens to cook!! Then watch some you tube videos on ideas & techniques!!
I'm watching your video little bits so I'm commenting again 😊 You are so right about needing less food on a very nutrient diet. Around 2009 I put my family on a paleo/primal diet. It was shocking how our hunger went down and we didn't need as much food. It all seems to even out budget wise.
We always meter out the protien for our dinner so everyone gets at least one serving, but there is always plenty of sides to go around. We were really poor growing up and had 4/$1 mac and cheese several times a week. We also had cereal a lot. Times got better, but i still worried about having enough. I could stretch one chicken into three meals! That's for four people. I learned alot about budgeting and cooking from scratch. I still stockpile food like we are going to starve. Idk if that fear of going hungry ever really goes away
My mother and grandma were wonderful cooks and everything was by scratch. We never ever went hungry. My father passed away when I was 18 months old of a stroke. He was 36 yrs old leaving my mom widowed very young with 4 children (me being the youngest). Money was scarce in my younger years. My grandma was a cook in a restaurant so my mom knew how to cook very well. One thing I was raised on was goulash and to this day I still love it and make it myself. Yum! I can’t make some of things exact like my mom and grandma like homemade rolls, cinnamon rolls, sausage Turkey dressing, and pie crusts but I get really close. I’m like you. I can’t stand it if my kids are hungry so I make sure they eat. Cooking isn’t my favorite thing to do. I tend to cook a lot more in Fall and winter. My daughter loves to bake. You’re such a good mother mommabear!
I went to a country school . People other kids from other schools would make fun of my school , I loved my school I will tell you why, we had wonderful teachers that really cared ,we had principals that really cared and made sure we all were OK, we even had janitors that took care with us all and we had a spotless school . But most of all our school cooks made everything from scratch. And boy was it good. Home made food really does cost less and most of the time u have left overs. My kids when they where starting to eat food never ate baby food they ate what I cooked plus extra veggies. I canned food fresh from the fields. It's hard to be a mom and take and make the meals and watch what they put in their mouths . All good things takes some work and thought. Same as loving and caring about them. We had them its our place to make sure that we love and care for our children and making sure they eat the best food that we parents can provide . Through Jesus all things are possible. Teach children and yourself about our lord and step back and watch how he takes care of us. 😊
Growing up our mom worked alot being a single mom, our grandparents lived few houses down so if we wanted to eat dinner that's where we went! alot of times she always made big pots of things to make sure enough for us all, they really didn't have snacks or junk food and would go to the store daily they never stocked up or went weekly I Guess since they grew up in the depression they thought they were saying money that way
My Obgyn told me Stevia is an endocrine disruptor and is bad for women for fertility. That is interesting that your miscarriage was when you were using Stevia. I am sorry you had a miscarriage. I hope you are well and feeling better with this pregnancy. ❤
When I was a kid, the food that was cooked normally had some type of mustard in it and I am so allergic to mustard that my lips turn blue and I can’t breathe. Her favorite thing to make was sloppy joes and it has mustard flour and mustard seed so I couldn’t eat and I wasn’t allowed anything different. I went to bed hungry unless grandpa snuck me some cheddar cheese and crackers. Or she had Vienna sausages which has mustard in it too. They were fully aware of it and still let me go without anything. Plus I am and have always been lactose intolerant. I graduated early and went into the Air Force to get away from them. The beatings and no food were too much.
I would imagine if you did some basic cooking and food prep videos many would benefit. The current group of people parenting do not have basic skills and were not taught how to
YOU DON"T LOOK LIKE YOU FEEL WELL AT ALL. ARE YOU TAKING GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF? I CAN'T IMAGINE TAKING CARE OF SO MANY CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY THE LITTLE ONE AND BEING SICK AND PREGNANT. YOU ARE A STRONG PERSON TO BE ABLE TO DO ALL THAT. I WISH YOU THE BEST WITH YOUR LARGE FAMILY. JUST REMEMBER TO ALSO TAKE CARE OF THEIR MOM.....
I have only just found your channel, so i'm watching through some of your older videos in no particular order. I used to eat a lot of ice cream, but after i had my cancer treatment i put on a lot of weight, and was pre diabetic, mainly due to medications and treatments. Anyway, to help with my weight I make myself fo ice cream 100g frozen Bananas 50g frozen Blackberries 50g frozen Blueberries 50g thick 0%fat natural organic Greek Yogurt Add ice if needed Whizz it all together in a high powered food blender until smooth, pop into a bowl and enjoy You can also pop it back into the freezer if needed. I don't add any sugars or sweeteners to this, it tastes great. You can also use different soft fruits, like strawberries, mango, peaches and so on, but i have found you always need the base of bananas to give the ice cream texture, either frozen or fresh. If using fresh bananas you can omit the yogurt but will need more ice or it will need to go into the freezer for a while to help it to set up.
When I cook dinner, I fix extra meet and slice that meat thin for my husband’s work sandwiches the next day. This week, he took pork loin sandwiches with cheddar cheese and spicy mustard. That pork loan was 3.99, instead of 8.99 a pound for deli meat! No brained and no extra effort!
Do your children know basic cooking by the time they are teens? My children learned to make a baked potato for a snack. I had imitation bacon bits or sesame seeds as toppings. If they wished. My children started learning how to cook beginning about 6 years old. My mother was a working nurse, taking 3 junior high school age children to both dance & piano lessons & going back to college part time!! Everyone helped her -- my sister did extra chores, while my brother typed her class papers & I proofread them. Her Canadianisms came though (eg colour, etc) & needed to be weeded out!!
I started cooking at the knees of my grandmothers! Scrambling eggs, stirring cornbread! By age ten, I was in 4-H, learning to cook and preserve foods and I remember that one of the requirements was to cook a breakfast, lunch, and dinner for our families… at ten! So very cool!
Three Rivers Homestead, is another channel that might help your subscribers feed their children. One thing my family put emphasis on was whole food growing up and we had very, very little money, but you aren’t hungry with the basics!
Hi you live how we live, I cook most of our meals and I don't can food but I freeze because I have a lot of freezers I grow vegetables and have hens for eggs. Sheep that we kill. in Australia we are have same issues family's experiences problems and the food banks are having more people needing to use the food banks. From country Victoria Australia 🇦🇺
I agree!
You're wise beyond years! You give people hope! Thank you for sharing. I can relate to all of it. Touched my heart. 😊😊😊
Thank you so much! That was such a sweet comment.
Blessings
Yes! 💯 thanks for sharing!
Dear older children everyday.I mean, I see him working all the time, but that the girls ever go out with anybody.Does they have any friends
Exactly and I think it’s a crying shame that they don’t. I truly believe most are a little lazy! I know even when I worked I still put nutritional meals in the table, I utilized a crockpot or did reading of women’s magazines for recipes etc. occasionally we did go out to eat or order a pizza.
I have so much respect for you. A wonderful woman on a mission to raise and teach her family the good things about life.
Thanks for sharing! So neat to see others journeys!
Oh and I believe children should be able to eat until they are full. Happy full bellies, makes me happy ❤
So true! Great work for you and your husband!! Keep up your great work!
You're a lovely lady. Thankyou for sharing your caring heart. Love and kind thoughts from Australia x
Thank you so much! I hope you have a blessed day!
Yes it is sad! I am self taught so I want to bless my children with the gift of how to cook.
She works hard putting these videos out and has great content. She’s not pretentious like so many other channels. She’s real. We can all relate - well maybe we can’t relate to having that many children but we can relate to real life and things we can do to make our homes better for our families.
Mama Bear, I hope you don’t mind this comment of encouraging others to support your channel.
I feel so blessed to have subscribers like you! You brought tears to my eyes with your kindness thank you! 😊
When I make tacos
I warm refried beans and put them in the taco shell first then add the taco meat, cheese and lettuce.
I add them to my quesadillas!
I grew up learning not to waste food. And to clean my plate. In the 50s we were told that Korean kids were starving. I admire you for all the food prep you do! You are such a wonderful person. ❤
Thanks for sharing! What a kind comment. I hope you have a blessed day!
Thanks for sharing!!
When I make tacos I always shred zucchini , carrots and sometimes potatoes into the meat and seasoning, it makes really hearty tacos and tastes the same as plain meat. I don't need to budget groceries, I just prefer not to eat so much meat.
Yes all great ideas. We used to add things as well it really depends as we are navigating type 1 as well.
@@mommabear2manyI have always added lentils to minced beef to stretch it. Lentils are so nutritious.
Thank you for sharing your views. I love to listen to what you have to say about a lot of things.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
We Grew up poor and we did sit down for meals,Potatoes and Breads of all kind.oatmeal with powder milk. We have eggs
I remember at gmas she raised me for the most part so my childhood most of it was spent at gmas house
There were 4 kids and 5 adults for every main meal and breakfast in a 3 bedroom trailer
We had more bodies/ people than beds or bedrooms
The main thing I remember is being told to clean your plates because we didn't know how hard that food was worked for and starving kids in not only Ethiopia but maybe many of our friends didn't have have dinners like ours or plenty to eat
I remember the 2 or 3 days I was at mothers being hungry all the time bebecame she did not keep food I had grown accustomed to eating at gmas good healthy food instead of junk or the foid was spoiled like the time I ate mashed potatoes made with bad milk that caused me to be ill for 3 days
Gma would always say here eat the last piece of chicken finish up the potatoes so well have room in the fridge then at hedtime before bed my aunt would pas out the cookie or candy tin and we could have 2 pieces sometimes on weekends when CBS I think played the Disney movie special we'd get a fat bowl of ice cream
Breakfast usually consisted of unsweetened rice krispies chex cornflakes or honey nut cheerios
On weekends we could have a bagel or English muffin they were easier to eat outside while waiting for Sunday school bus and Saturdays if we didn't make pancakes or corn fritters we could have some of our sweetened cereal no more than 2 bowls though and we weren't allowed to be careless with the milk half a cup each bowl and that was it
Also when we came home from Sunday school lunch was smorgasbord day which means cleaning out all the leftover and trying to eat them up because my gma and aunt were grocery shopping and needed room for the new groceries
Sounds like your GMA knew exactly what you needed! How very special!
Such a blessing!
As our father made more money, we would go out for fish and chips once a week.
i raised my kids like i was raised..we had a breakfast
lunch was at school and a dinner at 5pm exactly...our plate was fixed by our mom and you got 1 plate, but it was enough that you didn't need a 2nd serving...and you ate what was cooked, no fast convenient food..mom only knew how to bake 1 flavor of cookie (oatmeal raisin or oatmeal chocolate chip) we had 1 serving meat
1 serving of veggies or salad(garden season)
usually applesauce or chilled canned fruit and a butter bread...we never went to bed hungry for lack of food. we were blessed that way.
I've been fermenting it for awhile and love it❤
I just screen shot it thank you I might try that!
We always made it the same way, but didn't tighten the lid down hard to keep it from busting
I think it is so far gone in society that young people feel they can’t change. Hugs 🤗
I thoroughly agree with you!! I pray we never have to ration our family!!❤❤🙏🙏xxoo
Yes same!
Such great tips! Thanks for sharing!
And sometimes in life, it’s just kind of fun to buy things we don’t need to eat food we shouldn’t, etc. enjoy life a little
My grandpa made a refrigerator- clean -out "Stew" once a week. Whatever was left over went in the pot with Chicken broth or tomato sauce and he tweaked it with spices . Also, his specialty was Chili. He always made a pot of rice to make it go further. We were always full.
Sounds great! Thanks for sharing!
This is back to the days of the depression years. Back then people were lucky to eat at all.
Unfortunately I’m seeing so much struggling.
Love your channel and how honest you are. I am learning so much from you !
Thank you so much! I’m so glad my sharing has blessed you. So glad to have you here!
We did a lot of cobblers (you call them crisp)
❤❤ You are a true blessing. This video is so full of encouragement for so many struggling. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Have a great day!
Yes great tips!! Thanks so much for sharing!
Have been letting the ads run through to help your monetization. I'm praying for y'all.
Aww thank you I appreciate it!
Soups and homemade bread bowls are my favorite time of year😂❤
Yes! Good for you! I learned kind of the same through cookbooks and experimenting.
Between my mil and bil living together they get almost $300 a month food stamps and my niece with her husband and 3 kids got $900 a month food stamps..seems to me most people get a nice amount of food stamps, it’s more than I can afford to pay for my hubby and myself!
I w@@Shopgirl1 I wonder if she gets food stamps
Times are hard. People are working and still struggling. People need to help each other. Food banks are tossing food because there are not enough people coming to get it.
This is true. We actually pick up the rotten food for our pigs. But I would much rather it go to someone in need.
Just start YouTubing simple recipes. I didn’t know how to cook either just took 1 recipe at a time and made a ton of mistakes.
Blessings to you all❤
Thanks for sharing your story!
You are avery wise mom and wife times a hard for everybody but the lord is always with you blessings from heike
Thank you! Have a blessed day!
That is so very true! Thanks for sharing all that you did there so much to glean from your comment!
Thank you!
You share your experiences in such an authentic and easy matter and, indeed, that is NOT easy….
Great alternative. Yes we have scheduled snacks not free for all.
I've had that happen. It always makes me feel awful. Backup pancakes are always a win
I only limit things like crisps (chips) and chocolate biscuits that I buy to have in the packed lunch we take once a week , if my children get hungry between meals they can have yogurt and fruit
Sounds great! Like you have it predetermined. I bet it saves lots of money and your children enjoy meals.
How wonderful !
Thank you so much!
🤗
Love your talking about this I happy for you having number 15 I have just one left at home
Aww they grow up so fast don’t they? I wish we could keep them small but then we would have the blessing of grandbabies either.
Your video's truely bless so many people in so many ways. You are tfuely doing Gods work. Thankbyou. GOD BKESS
Ok, another an essay length comment later~ sheesh!
Interesting 🧐 maybe.
Try lightly salted popcorn for nausea
Ok
That’s so very interesting thanks for sharing!
Buying less meat saves soooo much money! Thank you for making this video!!
@@ddchomeschool yes so very true. Thanks for sharing!
My boyfriends kids are so picky I cook a good meal ..it's doesn't look good to them or some excuse so he let's them fix ramen and snack cakes ...drives me crazy
I’m sorry that must be a struggle.

I grew up and still live in Appalachia one thing that we have always had that goes along way is beans and corn bread. When you grew up in the hills you learn to make do and get by.
Yummy!
Allulose sweetner is the best per Dr Boz ..it does not have sugar alcohols
My heart breaks for you 💔. I never experienced anything like that. I grew up in a big family and my husband and I have 9 children. Growing up, we always had enough to eat and my husband and i never had to ration food.
I think we learned so much. I feel blessed to share with others. Honestly I’m seeing lots of momma struggling with this so it’s why I share hopefully to encourage another struggling momma.
A NP taught me to sniff an alcohol wipe to help stop vomiting.
Interesting 🤨 I might have to try that.
Convenience foods and take out are not a food group. Youngsters need to be shown how to cook, and what balanced diets look like x
Sounds like you are doing a great job!
We went to bed without dinner as punishment sometimes when we were little- hated it.
I’m still shocked people by water first time I saw water machine by the sodas I said no one is going to buy a water.
lol true.
I'm watching your video little bits so I'm commenting again 😊 You are so right about needing less food on a very nutrient diet. Around 2009 I put my family on a paleo/primal diet. It was shocking how our hunger went down and we didn't need as much food. It all seems to even out budget wise.
Yes so true! Honestly I do that a lot when watching videos. Comment all you want as you think of them. Glad to hear from you!
I 100% agree people should not refuse help or not ask for help due to pride or due to any supposed biblical explanation..
And I’m afraid her kids will have that fear since she’s rationing their food
Obviously you didn’t watch the video!
Fruit pies lol. There used to be bread stores when I was a kid where my Mom would get hostess stuff cheap.
Yes!!
Blueberry pies were my favorite ones.
Yummy!
Very informative information your a Blessing 😊God Bless you ❤
Thank you! You too!
Thank you for sharing!
Interesting that your ob said that but it’s true. I’ve since found other moms who had similar situations as I did.
Im so sorry hugs.
You can mix that pound of taco meat with about an equal amount of canned beans add some more spice, that meat goes twice as far.
Yes if we didn’t have health needs we could.
I so agree wjth you
Carbsmart! Lowcarb ice cream. Kroger and walmart even have icecream bars covered in chocolate.
We got some the other day sweet pea loved it and no spikes win win thank you!
@mommabear2many I also put a spoon full of peanut butter on top of the chocolate one, and it's super yummy 😋
Anyway, to help with my weight I make myself fo ice cream
100g frozen Bananas
50g frozen Blackberries
50g frozen Blueberries
50g thick 0%fat natural organic Greek Yogurt
Add ice if needed
Whizz it all together in a high powered food blender until smooth, pop into a bowl and enjoy
You can also pop it back into the freezer if needed.
Yummy!
Love that!
They know way more than basic cooking!
Baby girl is so adorable 🥰
Aww thank you!
Hi you live how we live, I cook most of our meals and I don't can food but I freeze because I have a lot of freezers
I grow vegetables and have hens for eggs. Sheep that we kill.
in Australia we are have same issues family's experiences problems and the food banks are having more people needing to use the food banks.
From country Victoria Australia 🇦🇺
Sounds like you have a great plan! It’s so sad to hear there is such a need lately for food banks.
Carbs make you crave more carbs is what I found.
I am SO sorry that you didn't get dinners as a child.
