  • In this episode, we explore buildings that harness the power of nature, including wind turbines, power stations that run by water, as well as solar panels.
    --
    An investigation into the greatest man-made structures of all time, exploring how new materials and construction techniques have allowed engineers, builders, and architects to work to the limits of their ability. The series focuses on the buildings that re-wrote the rulebook and the architects, engineers, and builders who made the impossible possible.

    You can generate your own power from solar and be free of the utility company forever. Now I know it’s not for everyone. You’re going to need some DIY skills and at least $10,000 to run your whole house rain or shine, day and night. It can be done, been doing it for almost six years now and I will have power and AC no matter how hot it gets or what happens to the grid. It’s just like having a garden vs. being dependent on the grocery store. It’s all about self-sufficiency.

    All the billions spent on renewables… now at less then 2%. That’s right,, as they squeeze fossil fuel prices. There is no real alternative at this time

    • @MelissaR784

      If these renewable sources were reliable and cost-effective, we wouldn't need oil and coal, that still produces 75-80% of our electricity. Funny how so many billionaires bought oil stocks during the pandemic. 🤔

      Fossil fuel was temporary and there’s no alternative yet. We should use it sparingly only for necessities, and become self sufficient locally. And stop polluting.

    Renewable is irrelevant, calling energy sources RE tells us absolutely nothing useful about sustainability, environmental impact, effectiveness, efficiency or anything else that actually matters. Renewable is nothing but a misleading marketing term like all natural or chemical free. It's used to give the impression that it's better without bothering to look at what it actually does and doesn't do.

    • @paul1979uk2000
      @paul1979uk2000 2 года назад

      Try telling that to the millions of people that have solar or wind energy on their homes that it's irrelevant.
      The irony is, for about £6,000, I could build a solar system on my house that would cover all my energy need and generate way too much in summer, assuming you install the setup yourself which works out much cheaper.
      The problem isn't renewable energy, the real problem is storing that energy, if battery tech was much better, a modest solar setup would be enough to generate all the electric needs of your house and push a little more, you could cover all your energy needs, heating, electric car and so on.
      So yes, renewables isn't irrelevant but it's not prime time until battery tech catches up so we can store a lot of energy.

      You completely missed the point. What matters is clean, reliable, low environmental impact energy, not if it's called RE or not.
      Intermittent and reliable energy are not the same thing. Some W&S makes sense if there is enough firm, reliable power to insure stability. Too much raises costs (financially and environmentally) and weakens energy infrastructure functionality. W&S operate on top of reliable energy, not instead of reliable energy.
      I think there are appropriate applications for all energy sources, meeting the needs of 7.5 going on 10 B of us in vastly different circumstances will likely take all options. As NP is by far the lowest environmental impact we should be using it as much as possible.
      Most of us have no idea what it takes to have reliable energy infrastructure, and we should if we're going to have opinions about how it should be done.
      For a explanation that we don’t have to be engineers to understand a great resource is Shorting the Grid: The Hidden Fragility of Our Electric Grid by Meredith Angwin.
