Samayamide, is a comical look into life as we know it. We are all engaged in the daily, incessant pursuits of goals, desires and wants, leaving no time for introspection. The Nayika , the lady that the dancer is depicting, is married. She sends her husband away on a trip, as she sheds fake tears, and then goes to Krishna, her lover. She tells Krishna that this is the time to be together as her husband is not in town, trying to convince the annoyed krishna to come and be with her. She says her father-in-law can’t hear, and that once the sun-rises they can no longer be together.
While the lyrics literally reflect infidelity, the idea itself, is more layered. Krishna, represents the supreme consciousness, or the knowledge of the self, which we find no time for, in the pursuit of mundane pleasures. The irony in this metaphor, is that Krishna is represented as a mundane pleasure, in a scene that is easily understood because of it’s closeness to daily life. The pursuit of the self, is not seen as something that is alienated from daily life, it is seen as a part of it. The Padams and Javalis of Bharatanatyam constantly represent this same concept in many different ways, utilising the emotions around romance and love, directed towards the representations of this idea, (Krishna, Muruga, Shiva, Devi) to convey the ideas of the pursuit of Self knowledge.
The layering allows a person to just watch and enjoy the literal story of the humorous situation, or choose to go beyond that layer to a deeper more spiritual understanding.

Samayamide is one of your best pieces on Krishna! The audience feels an immediate spark of Rasa when you smile upon the husband leaving. The way you try to embrace Krishna while he dodges you is portrayed so accurately (physically and emotionally). The combination of the Raga Behag and your Abhinaya is just immaculate! I have read somewhere that it takes lifetimes to master an art form, just like it takes lifetimes to climb up the spiritual ladder. Ma'am, the combination of your hard work and dedication towards Bharatanatyam, and your Bhakti creates such rich and evocative art. I needed a while to come out of it. Thank you so much for your art, ma'am!
Being able to dance this well with such beautiful expressions needs lifetimes of Tapas, which I’m sure Rukmini Ji has done. Her mastery is phenomenal. God bless

You are the best dancer of today's times- I swear! And especially the way you deliver the action in your performances, is unmatched. Body language, eyes, mudras, all are spot on and appropriate for the character played, every single time, whether 'Maadu Meikkum Kanne' or this. Your concepts are so unique and beautiful. I'm blown away by the bold and realistic portrayal of a very much existent narrative. It's handled lightly, with fun elements that made me blush This hands down my favorite Bharatanatyam piece. An you truly blew the expression right out of the park! Joyfully magnificent
Once again, I'm in awe of your dance skills, your range of expressions combined with the dance tells the story perfectly. I know you must put many hours into choreography and practice and it shows in the technical grace of this work.
Your understanding about various contexts is awesome..good analysis of the song...especially when you understand and see Krishna as the Supreme knowledge within ourselves ...A person who can analyze and who can be in the shoes of the character can only be a good actor. With grace and movements, dance comes into the picture..which is undoubtedly lovely ..its a treat to watch...good camera work and good surroundings..thank-you for this video Rukmini mam!

The expressions of Krishna are complex and captivating. Ms. Preethy Mahesh has brought in her sweet voice, all the seductive power possible. Somehow I am reminded of my favorite Smt. M.L.V. whenever I hear Ms. Preethy Mahesh sing .
In those days darkness must have favored many JAra ChOrans! Apparently AththagAru is not there and MAmagAru is stone deaf! How very convenient to everyone concerned! :)
One loving suggestion! Please wear some kind of neck ornament. For this song you could have a worn a mangal soothram and made the lady's appeal very authentic. Great number! Great Location! Great music! Great bhAvams. Be Blessed!
In one old Tamil movie actor JanakarAjan would run around screaming his head off saying,
'' en poNdaatti oorukkup poittaa!'" I am reminded of this scene while watching the joyful and excited lady getting ready to meet Krishna secretly! :)

You must have noticed how lovingly she packs the food for her husband who is going on a tour. She is really virtuous but Lord Krishna is irresistible. It is not her fault that she is drawn to Him. The dilemma of a dame torn asunder between the Divine and Mundane is depicted very well in this song and this dance. It is true that 'Man is not his own master!" Man is born free but he is in an invisible chain everywhere!
