    With this excellent lecture and demonstration of tarp principles you have given us multiple ways to setup. Tensioning is important. Guidelines at each tie out, rather than staking directly to the tarp, allows ways to balance tension and gives much more room inside. Site selection is more important for a tarp than a tent. Tarp set up forces the user to think ahead, site selection, pole height, stake locations and guidelines angles…. Thank you from East Tennessee.

    Excellent! This is fundamental knowhow and very helpful for pitching. If I am in a hurry I sometimes forget these principles and try to construct some triangles at once. As you show in a very clear way the result may be awful. And the material of the tarp itself will last much longer when forces an stresses are in a proper balance. Thank you Papa Hiker and crawl your lovely dog.

      Hi Reinaldi, jeah, the birds are awesome! I was debating to talk about them but decided not to in the video, but, there is one high screeching sound you can hear that is made by a couple of buzzards. I'm hoping that they nest in one of the trees here this year. A risk to the chickens, but fun to watch :-)

    Love the channel Papa hiker and I am so glad you did a lesson #2 in this serie.
    I want to bring an idea to your attention. Not from me, but found it on RUclips [1], together with a page [2] explaining the use of a "self-equalizing anchor".
    The idea is that a self-equalizing anchor can spread the stress out over your grommets instead of putting it all on the corner grommet.
    My thoughts are that redirecting all force to one stake means you are putting all the stress the tarp takes from the wind to that one stake. I would rather go with more stakes to offload the stress the tarp endures to multiple end points (read stakes).
    So I do not see the benefit of such a self-equalizing anchor, but I might be overlooking something here. I am interested to hear your opinions and/or experiences even on the use of a self-equalizing anchor and how it handles stress from high winds.

      @jasholden9741 3 года назад +1

      Have you read about the *Alpha Tent?* Any tarp that is not over 3x3 meters can be used, square or rectangular.
      The poles should be 8% longer than the diagonal on the tarp.

    • @8thsinner
      @8thsinner 3 года назад +2

      You can use the marble and clove hitch method. Then tie that to trees if you have no lifting tabs spread out over the place. It does put more pressure on the outer edges of the bound marble which can tear in a weak tarp, or get torn in a strong gust.
      You can also get non damaging tarp clips but they do not work as well in the middles as they do on the sides.
      If it wasn't windy you could use a magnet on the inside tagged to a magnet tied to a tree. But if the wind picks up you'll end up with a bump on your head when it flies off. lol

    • @P_RO_
      @P_RO_ 3 года назад +2

      He's not a fan of ridgelines or overhead lifts. But as long as the lifting force is applied to the same point a pole would go, and the lifting force isn't on an angle, then it's essentially set up the same way. In the heavily-forested areas around here, ridgelines and lifting tie-outs can be done almost anywhere and I do like not having a pole inside.

    I have a question. (maybe a prompt for a video?) To what extent do your shaping techniques and favorite pitches need the tarp to be silnylon? Silpoly is now looking like a good alternative in many ways (no water absorption), and of course some like DCF tarps for the weight and other advantages. But these don't stretch like silnylon. This is potentially also an advantage (no tightening in the middle of a rainy night), but lots of your pitches look like they do make pretty good use of the elasticity of silnylon. How happy would you be if you switched over to silpoly? How much would you have to change your technique? What would you lose, what might you gain?

    • @papahiker9014
      @papahiker9014 3 года назад

      Hi Scot,
      after your comment I have been looking into silpoly. I think the non-stretchy character could be a benefit for many pitches (hopefully the lengthwise pyramid, that would be great), but would make some pitches impossible. Some practice testing would really help though. I will try to get a silpoly tarp somewhere and give it a shot! Have a great time, papa hiker

    Papa
    I desperately want to start using a tarp. Watched lots of your tutorials.
    But I am unsure.
    If I was in a situation of strong winds, would I peg the tarp directly to the ground to stop wind getting under it and using the tarp like a sail.
    Or would I still use the lines so the tarp edges were not touching the ground.
    Thanks 🔥

    • @papahiker9014
      @papahiker9014 3 года назад +1

      Hey Kenneth, personally, I like to always float the shelter in the air, also in very strong wind. If the wind comes from one side then I will sometimes pile natural materials on that side of the tarp at the edge. That means less wind in your shelter, but still enough air flow to keep the moisture under control. What you can do, and that is also totally fine, is stake the windward side directly to the ground and float the other edges using tie-outs. That is not ideal for pressure distribution mind you, but I understand that some people feel they just want that wind side closed. Will only really work if the ground is level enough.
      Good luck! Papa hiker
