The aircraft had deviated from the glide path for quite a long period of time. If it escaped the attention of one of the crew it is understandable. I am unable to understand how both the pllots could not notice such a obvious error.

    • @mr.average2115

It appears he did but not when in “green needles” associated with tuning the ILS. He selected approach then flipped his nav source from VOR to ILS which in turn would revert the autopilot from approach mode back to HDG/VSI. With the wind drift this caused the left deviation. This is why verifying the FMA is crucial to make sure what you selected is actually happening. I would say pilot error and a significant lack of CRM.

With all these crashes in IMC conditions, it's truly astounding the lack of basic piloting technique of head down and fly your instruments. Even with the auto pilot off, you fly the keep the lines centered. Both deviations should have been seen and corrected for. To be that far deviated vertically and horizontally, and fly well below MDA without having the airport in sight, the pilot, and copilot, really had to have been checked out and had their heads up their asses, and this is true for a lot of crashes where it's clear when in IMC, even marginal IMC, all they had to do was "fly under the hood" essentially, and everything would have been fine. But nope, they know better, and get people killed. While rare, it is sadly becoming more common for these events to occur as quality of pilot training is being traded for other social efforts, as we've recently seen with United.

  • @joshlampe3458
    @joshlampe3458 Месяц назад +29

It seems to me there was some intention behind the pilot's actions, specifically with wanting to get low and under the cloud base early. It seems like this was all intentional until the go around, rather than an accidental misconfiguration. When the go around was called it was too late, by that point they had stopped flying the airplane for a few seconds and it sealed their fate.

  • @patolt1628

Unfortunately the captain died (RIP) but this crash is appalling: it's a misuse of the ILS related automation by pilots who are performing ILS approaches almost every day! As a former pilot I don't really understand.
Btw: funny title of the video. Brest is not exactly the "Heart of Europe", it's even the end of Europe in its West part, at least at that latitude. Brest is in a region called Finistère (litterally: the end of the land) ... The heart of Europe would be around Vienna in Austria (for the EU ...)😉

The flight directors provide information for the pilot to join a desired path with the optimum attitude. Movement of the roll command bar to the left or right requires rolling the aeroplane to the left or right, in order to centre the command bar, and to satisfy the computed command. When centred, the command bar indicates the achievement of the required attitude.
The ILS raw indicator indicates the position of the desired track in relation to your position. Therefore, if the indicator indicates a right deviation, it means that the desired track is right of the aircraft.
In this case, if the flight director shows a left deflection it means that the aircraft needs a slight correction to the left in order to intercept the desired track in the most efficient way. This would be common, for instance, shortly before reaching the desired radial - the flight director will move left so that the aircraft doesn't overshoot the desired track. However, the ILS raw indicator would still show a right deflection.

Nice video. The crew here displayed gross incompetence - not understanding how to use their equipment, not being familiar with approaches to the airport and its topography, and therefore unable to appreciate either lateral or vertical deviations from the selected approach pilots should always study and understand where they are going, irrespective of the technology that helps them navigate and land). They also did not know their position with respect to the airport at given points during the flight, so even with repeated audible warnings, they didn't understand they were too low and not lined up with the runway. Finally, they were unfamiliar with the airliner's engines. This was not a modern fighter jet with an engine that can go from an idle setting to Zone 5 afterburner in three seconds. Airliner engines require time to spool up, and there wasn't enough time here. Lastly, crew communication and situational awareness were poor. I am not clear on why you cannot fly an ILS approach without the Approach switch set on the Autopilot. If you tune into the ILS frequency (glideslope, azimuth), can't you just watch the indicators on your display (or on your HUD) and fly the airplane to touchdown? Perhaps I do not understand what is meant by "arming" the ILS. I would be most appreciative of an explanation to help me understand.

I wonder if the Captain lost his life because he was the last to leave the aircraft and the fire impossible for him to get out? I didn’t realise it was so easy to crash in such a catastrophic way. After all it touched down, all they had to do was avoid trees.

The definition of "immediately before" means happening with no intervening time between it and something else. In other words, it refers to something that occurs right before another event.
Here are some other ways to say "immediately before":
      Right before
      Just before
      Directly preceding
      Preceding immediately
Here are some example sentences of how it might be used:
      - Immediately before the race began, there was a moment of tense silence.
      - The doctor advised me to take the medication immediately before bedtime.
      - Immediately before leaving for vacation, I double-checked that I had turned off the stove.

Can't blame that on DEI. Just two very stupid pilots.
The pilot monitoring should have noticed all of the inconsistencies. It was all there visually displayed for both of them as per the glideslope indicators. Both pilots had duplicate flight control displays.
When it's said "you can't fix stupid". Well the pilot in command fixed that, as he inadvertently removed himself from the pilots roster.
