    Do you think Osaka Station will be rebuilt for a 6th time? On average it's rebuilt every thirty years so maybe 2040 or 2050 will be the year.

      You are lucky to have visited Osaka Station so many time, it truly is a wonderful station and an attraction in it's own right, in fact I really liked all five station styles of architecture.

    Great to see you back. That underground complex starting from near Dōjima river and going all the way to the buildings just north of Umeda-Ōsaka station are labyrinthine. I spent a lot of time in this area of Ōsaka in the early 2010s, and still didn't explore every nook and cranny. There was a bakery in there that had some really nice bread, and they must have gotten sick of my face (but not my yen).

      @JapaneseHistory  2 года назад +1

      I always appreciate your support Ijon Tichy. I'm sure the bread shop appreciated you too.
      Did you know that the original site for Osaka Station was intended to be on the banks of the Dojima River in a disused warehouse 700 metre south of its current location.
      They decided against that location as the Station would have only been a terminal station with no capacity to grow and that part of the city in 1870s was already dense.
      The settled on the current site as in 1870s it was just a rice field with not much more.

      Cool, that's interesting. It's amazing that there is still that plot of undeveloped land next to the station (not for long as you mention). I estimate it to be around 10 to 15 hectares. Imagine how much that quantity of land would cost in the heart of Sydney!

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  2 года назад

      Yeah your damn right. There is nothing like it in Sydney now. The last land of that size was in the 1980s in an area called Darling Harbour which was an old freight terminal next to large bay. Not that different to Osaka Stations north side now.

    Great to see you in the intro and conclusion of the video. That is a nice personal touch. Renovations, new lines, rebuilding, sinking platforms, and the original bell missing for so long with such a strange use!!! Osaka Station's history does not disappoint, and you do a great job telling that story! The graphics with all of the different lines added in through time are so helpful in understanding the station's history. Fantastic job, and well worth the wait!

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  2 года назад

      Thanks as always Taylor Mack. Yeah this station blew my mind being rebuilt five times. My personal favorite station building was the second one from 1901 to 1935. It's gothic style architecture would have been magnificent to see in person. An interesting fact was they never destroyed it when they demolished it, but rather deconstructed it. It was rebuilt in it's exact from using the same materials as a girls school in the Tokyo area. Unfortunately it was destroyed in 1945 during the bombings of World War II.
      No doubt Osaka Station had a deep history that had to be told.

    Another great video Mike. The constant upgrades Japanese stations receive over several generations is mind boggling.
    The part about the sinking platforms was new to me. Thanks again for another awesome video.

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  2 года назад

      Thanks Tonami Playman. The sinking has caused all sort of issues over the decades. At one point station staff had to place sand on the tracks for every train to get up the incline. Ultimately to repair the tracks they just packed more ballast to level it out, but the platforms and platform canopies had to be rebuilt on top of the original one. The scars of the slop and rebuild are still visible on platform 3 and 4.
      Even today with all the work, they still sink 1cm per year.

      Thank you for enjoying my videos and sorry it has been so long since the last one. I will make another one one day, but I can't commit to a date. It could be months away. Six months ago I was back in Japan and got a lot of footage to create with. However, they do take a very long time for me to make, an average length one normally takes about one month when I focus all my spare time.
      I take my hat off to other creators who can produce videos weekly, some even daily. I really don't know how they do it.
      The next one will probably be on the Midosuji line, but it could be a long time.

    Can you make video of the history of the C1 Route in Tokyo, and even histories about expressways in Tokyo? I already heard a news that an elevated section will be relocated underground and the project started last May. Not to forget that I know that a section near Ginza used to be a river but I can see any photos and maybe I have to search it in Japanese, not English.

    • @JapaneseHistory

      Thanks, Rudy. I find that these mega station that have been there from the begining have been cobbled together using any scrape of land above and under ground they can find which make for interconnections that are pretty poor in some cases.
      I once got lost in Shinjuku Station for about an hour going from Yamanote Line to San-Chome Station via the underground pedestrian tunnels and malls. Got there in the end lol.
      On another note, I think it's quite amazing what they're doing with Shibuya Station. That will be amazing once it's all finished, however it will be 20 years in the making but well worth it with all the urban cores they are building.
