Projection Mapping Tutorial - 3d Mapping with MadMapper

  • This projection mapping tutorial covers three approaches to mapping this paper model of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. We’ll be using MadMapper projection mapping software.
    Even though I’m using this paper craft model, created using Pepakura, this technique could just as easily be applied to a cake; it would make a great cake mapping project for someone who is a fan of Thor, Marvel or superheroes in general.
    I’ll demonstrate how to confine the projected content to the hammer using a mask to produce an easy 3d projection mapping effect in only a few minutes. However, I’ll discuss why this isn’t very effective and go on to show how to take good reference photos and use this to achieve more effective video mapping. Finally, I’ll map my own custom-made video animation on the hammer which features lightning and a runic inscription.
    This video is for anyone who’s ever wondered how to do projection mapping and is looking for a step-by-step beginner's guide.

    Wow, this is pretty close to the info I was looking for so thanks for the tutorial.
    I'm trying to project onto a 3D cone. I've already UV unwrapped it inside of C4D but it's either got a seam running down the side with no distortion or it's seamless with major distortion along the top and bottom. Even when I take those UV maps inside of After Effects and distort the effects/videos into the UV maps shape, I'm still not getting the greatest results. Any tips? I've done quite a bit of 3D and video editing work but this 3D projection mapping is totally new to me.

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  3 года назад

      Well, with a cone that's never going to be an easy shape to UV. You have to make a compromise somewhere as to where the seam is going to be. Think about where the audience will be viewing the object and hide the seam around the back?

      Hi - sounds like you need to set your projector as your output display and not your laptop screen. In the left panel, there are some little icons along the top. One icon is a projector. Click on that one and then click on 'projector 1'. Below, in its settings, make sure Output Destination is set to your projector, not your laptop screen. Did that help?

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  Год назад

      No need to worry about black areas. Black basically means “project nothing” i.e. no light. Unless you’re talking about overlaying lightning footage with content underneath? In that case use a blend mode in your video editing software, something like Add or Screen

Even figured out the same way to lay out the cake as a flat UV to help with the video render out of After Effects. Very cool! I can appreciate the trick to squeeze every last pixel at 1080p. What is the better software for home mapping for Halloween and Christmas? Is it Adobe A.E., Madmapper, or something else?

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  2 года назад

      Although I have shown AE can be used for mapping elsewhere in tutorials, it is primarily for content creation (animation/effects etc). MadMapper on the other hand handles mapping the output exclusively. So they excel at different stages of the whole projection mapping process

    hello, totally new to this stuff... My main question is if the software and things you can do with it, projection-wise, hardware dependent? Meaning can I do everything possible with ANY projector, or are only specific (more expensive) projectors able to video-map? (I guess that would be a very general question, but I would appreciate any explanations you can give me - as it would be quite a waste of time and money buying this software, learning it, only to later find out that you need to spend an arm and a leg to buy a ridiculously-overpriced projector to do what the software can). Thanks! :)

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  5 лет назад

      Hi -- it's a good question. Every projector is a form of output. Mapping software allows you to manipulate output, thus any projector is capable of working with mapping software. Cheap hardware will only limit how good the results look; low resolution = low quality results, etc etc. But in principle, you can do this with any projector. If you have a cheap projector and you're concerned it's not going to perform for you, you could always practice with some free software like MapMap and get your head around the basic principles of projection mapping before moving forward. I have a cake mapping tutorial with MapMap for beginners here: ruclips.net/video/gVTjA1nwZro/видео.html

    Thank you for this very helpful video. Although it is an older video, I still hope you could answer any questions I have about it. You say in the video: If you have a 3D model of the object, it will be easier to create content. Now my questions: 1. what software did you use to create the 3D model? 2. which animation program did you use? 3. how did the 3d model help you to create the animation easier? Or rather, it looks like you loaded 2d exports from the model into an animation program. From what software to what software did you do that? I would be very happy if you would be so kind as to share more details on my questions. Thanks a lot :)

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  Год назад

      My 3D software was Cinema 4D and the animation and effects were done in After Effects. Having a 3D model allows you to make accurate guides to design over. You can also do more illusion effects with fake lighting etc.

    how to totally remove background from projector? I means... always when I turn on the projector... there slightly white background appear... wanna display to only object..

    • @LumaBox
      @LumaBox  5 лет назад

      The problem you are experiencing relates to the projector's black level i.e. how dark its blacks are. Other variables can affect this like the projector's brightness and contrast settings - you could try playing with those. Ultimately though, every projector is different and how black its blacks are depends on the type of projector (i.e. DLP or LCD), usually how much you paid for it (don't expect too much from a cheap projector), manufacturer, luck of the draw, etc. Maybe increase the ambient light in the room so the surrounding walls aren't absolute black - then you won't notice the light from the projector so much.

    This is a great tutorial. When I went to go to your site... it said it's not secure... I wonder if you happen to know why?

      I'm experiencing the same thing and am looking into it. It's not normal behaviour for the website. Thanks for the heads up :)

    what is the advantage of using this over something like heavyM?

      They're similar software. It might just come down to which user experience you prefer.

      @@LumaBox so you can basically get the same results using heavym or resolume? I am sorry I am new I am trying to understand it, is this like a DAW in music?

      @@buildusarocket3410 All those three packages can do the corner pinning/mesh warping required to do projection mapping. Each have their own strengths. For example, MadMapper is ultra-targeted at projection mapping and is very user friendly whereas Resolume is geared more towards live events where people want to interactively apply effects to their media in real time, particularly incorporating music. Sorry I wasn't so snappy to reply this time! 😅

      @@LumaBox Thanks for the reply :) I was planning on doing some projection mapping using unreal engine as I am very comfortable with that. Could you recommend me something? I got madmapper, its very good but its mostly for lights and videos as far as I can tell.

      Yes. Slightly different workflow, but yes they're both capable of mapping in a similar way
