In #FM22, we created a 4-4-1-1 that has a LIGHTNING Counter-attack!. This FM22 tactic looks to sit deep and expose teams by hitting them on a counter-attack and blistering speed. Tested with Atletico Madrid, Everton and Tranmere Rovers proving to be successful with ALL teams involved.

Nice to see something other than high pressing/counter press and positive/attacking. I wish the match engine wasn’t so biased to gegenpress.
It certainly has the potential to be more defensive friendly. I just find the players defensive behaviours let’s it down a little, not reacting quickly enough

This tactic works great for me. I'm managing Arsenal and using this tactic for my u-18s. I removed Get Stuck In, Offside Trap and Prevent GK as the younger players don't really have the attributes for it just yet. It works great and a good tactic to prepare the youngsters who make it to the senior squad who are playing RDFs 442 Ralf Rangnick tactic. Superb
Currently this must be one of the hardest things in FM: winning without Gegenpress. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Liverpool supporter and I love me some Klopp-style football, but it's nice to shake things up a little.

Used for 6 games in ligue 2 BKT with FCSM and yet to get a win :( 4 draws, 2 loses - scored 3 conceded 8. Gutted it hasnt work for this save looked like a lot of fun to use with all the youth that'll develop at the club

Every time I try to make a tactic like this, it fails miserably. Definitely going to take some inspiration from this one, good work. Still trying to make a modern version of catenaccio work, no luck yet

I'm on FM22 with a long save, where I had b2b promotions with a low league team in Spain to La Liga. My budget is far worse than any other team by far. But still, I managed to build a solid team, which was doing good on the league, we were half table by the middle of the season.
My tactics were good, a positive and direct 4-1-3-2 which gave me a easy title on La Liga 2. But since my CBs are the worst players on the team, I was leaking too much goals. We had a lot of 2x2, 3x2, 4x5 and stuff like that. My keeper is good and helped a lot, but my defender lost to many challenges.
We were 10th on points, 6th on goals scored and 17th on goals conceded.
I had to change my tactic into something more defensive that my players could do, without losing my goal scoring numbers. But I had never done any defensive tactic on FM22, since it's known that they usually doesn't work very well on this version
So I came to the channel and searched for tips and ideas on defensive tactics on FM22. This was the first video I saw and I liked it a lot. It's a balanced counter attack tactic, which balances defensive roles on the defenders, very aggressive roles on the other positions, but a cautious general mentality to limit the aggression. The high pressure and compacting on the midfield makes you press with less danger but with good numbers.
It's a way to give help to the defenders with number advantage on the defense and still being able to hurt the opposition with fast players on fast transitions, even when you don't have the numbers advantage on the offense.
I loved the ideia and the video showed that it works with the match engine. So built it and started to use it. And bam, immediate success!
The first 4 games (against mid table teams, which were way better talented than us) gave me 7 goals scored and 0 conceded, on 4 straight victories! I had only 6 victories total on previous 24 games...
Not only I suffered no goals, but the xGa reduced drastically. And my xG only reduced a little. It was very much worth the trade!
When rotating the team, I used one variation to this that kept working similarly. I sometimes played with that exact formation, but also with the BBM swapped for a CM-A (still with move into channels) and the SS to a DLF-S on the right, still keeping the AF centered, making it a 442. All the other roles and instructions were kept.
This fitted better a different combination of players and the MCL role changing help keeping 3 players stretching the play, as pass into space options. The CM-A substituted the SS on this. And the DLF was a link of play to those 3 players. It was more aggressive than the original formation, but also good when used on the moments I used

Love the video! Full in-depth detail! Tho it's a long video but still enjoyed it! Happy to see you tested at least 3 different teams so that it's a bit unbiased in my opinion. Would like to see a video where you are using a mid table or lower team against big opposition. I bet some of us would like to know how to play a good counter-attacking football against big teams!
Been using this together with the 4132 with Liverpool. This tactic is very solid defensively for me. Won the title, Champions League and FA Cup using both these tactics.
The 4411 got me through some difficult games in the PL and CL while the 4132 we just scored for fun with Haaland as the AF.

Thank you! I think watching a defensive performance, it has to be this one. Others have got good or even better defensive records but that’s by defending from the front. It’s nice to watch you shut up shop and come away with a 1-0 win lol

Great Video RDF! I normally play a 4-3-3 with DM and have done well but suffered 2nd season syndrome. I wasn't creating enough chances. Not sure it's the players or tactic. So, for my 3rd season I am looking at either a 4-4-2 and 4-2-4 to put more pressure on the opposition. However, I normally play a very high line of engagement. Maybe my problem is that. If I drop the LoE down I may get better results.

Hi RDF, love this. This gave me the inspiration to try and build Birmingham City's womens 541 tactic that destroyed Arsenal Women's. Counter attack is very fun in fm22 as its harder to build but very rewarding.
Both that and your tactic are amazing in the Vanarama North and South.

Ok it’s confirmed, RDF’s favourite two words are “stuck in” 😂😂 (man says it every video). But anyways, thanks for this, it’s great to see a tactic that isn’t full intensity gegenpress and works. Going to probably try it when I face the big UCL teams in my save.
This tactic kinda reminds me of a set up Sir Alex Ferguson used against Norwich to great success.
I tried to build low intensive defence for away matches in my part-time Iceland save, not a tactitian myself but ended with pretty similar variant of 4-4-1-1. Looks like lower defensive line just don't work in fm22 so i used standart one. Plus i can suggest fairly narrow width with simple WMs( sit narrower instruction). Why? cause i believe you can't find quality IW with opposed foot in lower leagues. Instead you'll have same regular wingers that run in "semi-flank" zones and look to deliver ball rather then score a goal.

I have been watching your videos for some time, so much details and you explain everything, great videos, keep up the good work man! 👍 I do have a question, if you are losing or your opponent is a weak side, do you tweak anything? Mentality? Tempo? Or put the wingers higher up? Any triger press for opposition instructions on midfielders?

What can you do to make this more attacking/score more goal. I’m using it and sitting at 4th position right now with salford and I keep dominating most of the game but against good teams I can’t close out. I even lost to Walsall who are 13th

This was tested with Tranmere Rovers in League Two. Should work just as well in leagues lower
