The funny thing is, when the devs added that rat decades ago, I'm sure their thought process was something along the lines of "add cute animal for hub world because its cool" or whatever. Not a single thought was lost on the idea that this little rat could be used to sequence break the entire fucking game. It's so funny to me how such seemingly inconsequential decisions can have such a major impact down the line. All hail Dorito the rat
I find it amazing that anyone is willing to put themselves through that over and over again, where you can do everything right and still get your run killed 98% of the time at the end by something out of your control. Seems kind of sadistic, but impressive.
when you love what you do, there's nothing to it. getting up every day and pushing the limits of this amazing game every day gave me all the motivation i could have needed :)
yeah what laura said, i love playing this category and rat if anything gives it infinitely more replay value in a way. Just getting a good Dream Weavers exit time feels good regardless of what happens after that! I got my first WR on my 53rd WR pace into rat. And you might think with the time being way more optimized now it might be more frustrating, but no! Just getting a run that CAN wr into rat is a huge accomplishment and it feels really good. From the time I was first getting WR paces and averaging more than 1 pace a day into rat until now when ive gotten 1 WR pace into rat in the 22 days since Laura's 37:27, its been fun the whole time. I'm happy to be right here pushing for new levels of optimization with Laura and we're both doing it in a category we truly love and care about regardless of whether we get an end time pb or not!
If you think about it, it's no different than MMO players grinding raids for weeks or months on end for that one ultra-rare drop. I know of a guy who just finished seven months doing that going for a single item.
I adore these speedrunning rivalries where the record gets passed back and forth and that's some amazing gameplay by both Ash and Laura, they should be proud no matter where the record finally lands.

I've never understood how people persevere so well with such unreliable speedruns, for me even a 50% chance of being screwed over at the end is enough to add a bunch of frustration lol Great work, both to you on this fantastic video and to the runners who put so much work into these incredible runs!
I guess it's a similar appeal to watching a TAS with perfect movement and RNG luck complete it to see theoretically how fast you could beat the game if all the stars aligned perfectly.

The Resurrections music fits so well in that last bit. It sounds like there's not too much hope and then the moment the turnaround rat proxy is brought up, it moves to be intriguing, making you wonder "what would happen if that did happen in a run?" And then it happens. The music just FITS
It gets insane when someone discovers a new technique that shaves off time, even if its just a second, watching people do the wildest glitches all to save those nano seconds, its amazing to watch a speed running community grow

I just want to say that I played Spyro growing up as a kid and absolutely loved this game. I still remember all the tricks for 100% that me and my sisters learned over the years we had it as kids! 3:44 is where the clickbait title finally gets explained. Man, y'all speedrunners take fucking for-EVER to get to the point, which is extremely ironic, all things considered.
It's kinda wierd, whenever I watch some sort of speedrunning deep dive I never hear of any of the women who contribute to the journey or who get the records unless their the absolute first to try or the latest record holder at the time of writing. I'm not passive-aggressively saying it's actively malicious, just a weird trend.
Great video, clear narration, clear editing, and volumes are good. One criticism is that sometimes you blur the video a little too long before your text/visual comes on screen. A quick example would be 1:47, where the video is blurred for 2 seconds before the visual pops up. Compared to 1:55 just several seconds later, where the 'Wall Glide' text comes out right after the video is blurred. It's not a glaring flaw by any means, just something I noticed. I'll be checking out your other vids after this one. Cheers.

I'm confused, I know I've seen in other speedruns that the top of the first dragon head in gnasty's world has no collision geometry. That was a huge deal in spyro speedrunning. So how do they land on it to jump over and clip through the top of the second dragon to get to gnasty?
only the middle one, the gnasty one, lacks collision! we use the rat to get on top of the gnorc cove portal, jump onto the twilight harbor head, then into the gnasty head :)
I used to make fun of speed runners but then I realised that speed running is it's own highly compedetive game and I actually get excited for every seccond people can shave off a reccord.
It's so weird to me that I know enough about spyro speed runs to know exactly what Rat proxy is without ever having played a single one of them and only watching WR prog videos
we're reaching the point of diminishing returns here, but theoretically it's not impossible! it'll require a mistakeless run from start to finish though. 36 whole minutes of not a single wrong move

awesome speedrun documentary!! Spyro is my favorite trilogy (the 3rd game is my favorite!) and I love hearing about such cool tricks!

Twilight Harbor dragon head is built solid and has collision, the top of the Gnasty head does not have collision
