Reminder that the person who wrote the dark knight job quest line went on to write Shadowbringers. She's awesome.
She also wrote Coils of Bahamut and Crystal Tower. And the Doma side of Stormblood. And more. After Shadowbringers, we can't give her ENOUGH credit.

There are Greek parables about men having to face dark versions of themselves as manifestations of their guilt. I have no doubt the concept goes back much further than that, too. There isn't anything wrong with tropes. This is one that's rarely used and rarely done right. She happened to do it right, and that's definitely worth praising.

Yeah Fray is your selfcare ghost. Even more so in the Japanese script.
Like, in English, he basically gets fed up with you doing all the thankless chores for everyone and by the end wants to take over your life to stop that. In Japanese he fights you trying to get through to you so you'd put yourself first every now and then, but there's no mention of him wanting to take over. At least if I remember correctly, been like a year or more since I read the JP script.

Is that an actual line in the quest? I must've missed it in the video then.
For those who doesnt get it... when Fray scolding the NPC, it was your character scolding the NPC and that is why those NPC were afraid of you instead of Fray when you talked to them after the in-game cutscene.
Fray was only truly manifested in front of NPC at Lv50 DRK job quest.
WoL was casting Living Shadow before it even got added to the game :P
I think that even at the lvl 50 quest the wol was actually disassociating hard there too. What was PROBABLY happening was the WoL flailing around trying to regain control of their body:D
*[BIG LEVEL 70 DARK KNIGHT QUEST SPOILERS]* He does however manifest (we can assume due to Sidurgu's reaction) in the all awesome lvl 70 quest. God I loved that quest.
@@Faircraft3 I don't think so, no. The knights were actively attacking Fray, while saying words of encouragement to you. If they wanted to calm you down, I don't think they'd have been swinging their swords at you. Also: the knights in the courtyard were already wounded before you arrived: Fray manifested due to the BS of being forced to help another group of loser knights, and was taking out his rage on them while you were doing the helping.
@@kedolan4992 That sounds possible too yeah! I just think that at that point, "manifesting your shadow" wasn't in the developers' scope so the whole disassociation thing makes more sense to me at least. Plus I just think of the knights fending you off while you're..in-between modes? I guess:D

EDIT: Im going to put here because everyone need to say LD is the worst invul like their lives depend on it lmao.
Living Dead is the worst invul on normal content, but on high end content its arguably the best invul. Think about it, the invul period only started when they die.
So, the invul period is effectively longer than other class where they probably wasted 1-2 second from casting it.
Dark Knight effectively got 2x times the lenght of invulnerability than any other classes, from his not death (6 seconds) and Im death, need full healing period (6 seconds). Its also more time efficient than any other class, because you don't need to wait for the tank buster and wasting invul timer.
On normal content where you don't know your healer, its the worst. But on high end content where you knew your healer and have voice chat? Its the best.
Compare it to Paladin where they need to press the button, and then wait for the tank buster, wasting precious second of invul from just waiting. Dark Knight just press the button and they don't waste any seconds on waiting for the tank buster to happen. Effective invul time for any tank is 4 seconds, DRK got the full effective duration of 6 seconds.

Incase some of you don't get it, Fray/darkside is the self insert of how you feel when helping those damn NPCs.
Always loved that bit of self-awareness the game has about all the various shit you go through as the 'hero'.

@@PervertedNovaxc3 yeah the first time I saw it I was like “damn ! you’re not wrong but chill 😭” bc as a waitress irl I’m used to thinking bad stuff about my clients while being absolutely adorable in front of them (I also complain about doing side quests that are optional while being chill when I actually complete them XD) so that really called me out when fray/we snapped at the guy 😂
I affectionately call Dark Knights the emotional intelligence job in FF. Your power comes from emotion, raw emotion, it isn't drawn from the void like Reapers or Black Mages, it's something much more primal.
Dark Knights are like Sith who are able to control and use their emotion for good, all while practicing their dark arts.
And, spoilers for future job quests, but it's ironic that the edgy job in game is all about self love, and acceptance of one's own flaws.
Not so different from warriors using rage, but DRK is way cooler. And it's not just about self acceptance either. You have to remember that Frey is an unreliable mentor, he wants you to embrace the darkness and turn your back on the world. He's trying to teach the WoL that the victim doesn't matter, and all that matters is that the DRK gets to enjoy bringing justice down. He doesn't care if innocent people get hurt along the way because he just wants the WoL to go over the edge and be consumed by darkness (Which would be extra bad for the WoL because they care about every person so much). A DRK NEEDS someone else. For the WoL it's the whole of Eorzea and needing to save literally everyone and that's a good canon reason for why they can be so powerful as well. As they say during the quests something like the brighter the light, the greater the shadow it casts, for Sid it's the little elf girl. But they need an anchor to keep them grounded. Doesn't matter how much they give in to their emotions, because they always have something to bring them back after all the bloodshed.
I love DRKs but I hope they add more lore for them because there is next to no lore. If you can't take the stuff Frey says seriously (Which you probably can't since he's literally darkness incarnate.) Then there's only a handful of lines you you get from Sid and his mentor and the spoilery character from the 60+ quests who is also not reliable. Its like a few lines in total and half of it is just backstory before DRKs even got aether powers and was just the one dude fighting without a shield.
You just mean Form VII lightsaber combat users. Jedi that can use dark side abilities without being corrupted.

I couldn't help noticing during the RDM class quests that one of the antagonists did such crazy shit to pull off things that my DRK could just do from the start (Souleater). That's what playing with Voidsent gets you.
DRK is hilarious, because despite being the edge job, it's the only job that seems to go through (magical) therapy.

Dark Knight in FF14 has raised my expectation for any 2h sword class in any MMO now, and future MMO's it's so insanely dope. My best memories playing an MMO was my time main-tanking with Dark Knight on Final Fantasy.

@@1un4cy Levequests are an awful way to level combat classes, just FYI; the fastest XP comes from roulettes and dungeons, and the most braindead (watch Netflix and play) XP comes from Palace of the Dead- but both are better than Leves.

I will never cease to applaud the job Natsuko Ishikawa did in many portions on the narrative in this game including:
- The Dark Knight questline.
- The Rogue / Ninja class /job questline.
- The MSQ in Shadowbringers.
- The Azim Steppe MSQ in Stormblood.
- The story in Endwalker
Hold up, she wrote the Rouge quest line too?! I actually thought that one was better than the Dark Knight quest line.

Oh it feels so much better to hear the modern Alphinaud VA in these episodes at last.
It was just a nice reminder that he's grown in SOOOO many different ways lol.
It took some getting used to. But in time I grew to like Alphinaud's new voice. He sounds more like a young boy who are still diplomatic but inexperience which suits him better (Nothing against his previous voice actor).

certainly, but drk quest line by itself is pretty good. its very nice though that he held of for the stream to do it in 1 sitting, so seeing the quest again and from his pov made much better.

I'm working my way through DRK myself as well, just did the Level 60 story quest and... my gods, it's such a great and well written story, just fantastic dialogue and it's so compelling. I think part of what makes DRK so alluring, is that it's such a stark contrast to the usual "you're the warrior of LIGHT" that you're so used to. You're given a chance to just feed a bit into the darkness, and to learn to wield it for good. usually it's all about the morally correct choices for the greater good, while dark knight is all about the morally ambiguous for immediate, tangible results that benefit you, whether it be seeking justice or punishment for those who deserve it.
I really applaud him for keeping his cool while his supporters/detractors (it's kinda fuckin hard to tell, at this point, given their actions) are so damn annoying and making his experience harder.

I’ve been a Dark Knight main since Heavensward. I only wish Asmongold could’ve played the og version. It wasn’t as strong but you had to manage your MP a lot more. It was a bit more engaging. Still DRK is a really fun and cool class!
Compared to war playing drk is a lot more engaging. Warrior really needs it’s gameplay loop looked at

Ironically, a dark knight may be more of a paladin in this game than the actual paladins. Especially if someone *ahem* that Asmongold knows really wants to play a ret pally.

@@Sorrowdusk We don't really know, outside of knowing they're the Sultana's top bodyguards, since the Paladin storyline tries its very best to not give us any information or job history/characters, since we're explicitly called Free-Paladins, AKA shiny white-gold mercenaries. The entire job's story is basically just a footnote that gets more Gladiator story than anything else.
@@Valanway And from what I understand they are not even really called Paladins in the original Japanese language and are rather referred to as something closer to Knights.

@@Sorrowdusk Paladins in 14 are far closer to the historical Paladins of Charlemagne which were just an order of Knights trusted beyond all others in service to their Lord.
Its why in 14 they are also called he Sultansworn, sworn to the house of the Sultanate aka Monarchy.
So the Japanese name of Knight is also fitting

I would get started on the trial! I only have 1-2 hours a day to play and I’m still having a blast steadily working through A Realm Reborn.
2 weeks in for me and glad I tried the trial out! Purchased it not long ago :)
It would have been so easy to just make an evil you as your darkside. But they didn't go that way. Your darkside is everything you've repressed. All the things you want to say or do but choke down. The side that's had it with all the crap, with the fetch quests, with all the abuse. The side that's, to be honest, looking after *you*, rather then the rest of the world. And it's all brilliant.

DRK: It’s so big I have to hold it with two hands. 😏
It's not the size, it's how you use it. Case and point: PLD does more damage =p

I still have to remind myself every now and then that this is real and Asmongold is actually playing FFXIV and enjoying it.
THIS GAME IS EXACTLY WHAT WE HAVE BEEN ASKING WOW TO BE.
Which is why I'm so excited to see all these WoW players give the story a chance. It's long, and there are side plots, but it just gets SO good. If you thought the Dark Knight quest line was primo, the entire main story thread in Shadowbringers is even fucking better. And reading the whole story will make the payoff SO fucking juicy.
All these years, FF14 hasn’t changed, but 90% of the WoW players always belittle our game and wouldn’t even listen to our players, boy has the times have changed. I really doubt WoW will change, don’t you feel bad wasting 10+ years on your life? I’m glad I start FF14 on the ground floor.
Fuck that, all I see in this game is quest text... boring
The funny thing is Square-Enix made FFXIV as a WoW clone because the execs were jealous of WoW subscription numbers. SE ended up making a better WoW than Blizzard. I played FFXI before WoW was released, and I still say FFXI is the best MMO ever made. It just wasn't as accessible due to the amount of skill and teamwork it required. Anyone who thinks anything in WoW or FFXIV is hard has never fought an HNM, or bosses like Pandemonium Warden, or Absolute Virtue in FFXI. It literally took years before Absolute Virtue was finally defeated, and only after Square-Enix dropped enough hints.
What? Story is great but FF14 has many cons:
1) Zones are bland and boring
2) Combat is clunky (GCD is too long even with oGCD). Fastest WoW class has 20+ apm more than fastest FF14 job
3) Combat is not reactive - when I taunt/take aggro as a tank mobs react after like 1s (they are taunted instantly/they take damage instantly but they react after 1s thats game design)
4) not much challenging pve content (4 bosses every 6 months). In WoW its 8-10 raid bosses + usually a dungeon (like now with 8 bosses)
5) PvP doesnt really exist
6) PvE fights are scripted - you can literally memorise whole fight, mechanics gonna happen in the same time. FF14 players call it 'a dance'. I personally dislike this but maybe there are people who enjoy this so it's not really an objective con
WoW is way superior game in terms of doing PvE/PvP content just with very bad time consuming designs. It is improving however and I guess now, when some people left, they will get to work.
FF14 is superior game for casuals/people who mostly enjoy some social events, fashion, housing etc.
I enjoyed FF14 really much but when I finished all MSQ and did some pve i realised how much I like that reactive WoWs combat (also „clean” fights without many particle effects and shiny boss mechanics) and dungeons (in FF14 dungeons are boring and easy)
I like how 80% of Ishgard is dark knights and that citizen is still acting like he never saw anyone with a two handed sword

Barely anyone in the setting is any actual job. In some cases, the player is the ONLY known living person with it (like Scholar). Dark Knights, White Mages and Black Mages are all highly illegal and actively hunted and persecuted, either for being homicidal vigilantes or for being a risk to the entire planet (in the case of WHM/BLM).
Think OP meant 80% of players are DRK.

When you start playing, there is a chat you are instantly invited to called the Novice Network where there are players who will literally hard carry you through everything just to make you feel comfortable.
If you have questions on what to do, classes, gear, lore, dungeon runs, guilds(called free companies here)literally anything, someone will likely answer you and/or aid you.
you can easily find a random FC to join and most will probs have a decent amount of sprouts to group up with
us the community finder for your server and youll be golden

find an FF discord dedicated to the server that you're gonna pick. You'll probably find a guild there that will welcome you

A close second (for me) is the Red Mage story.
For sure. The end of the level 80 quest is some actual tear-jerker stuff. Never had an MMO teach me how important loving and accepting myself is before.
story telling is a huge part of FFXIV, everything, even job quests can tie into the MSQ, even the side quests can have an impact on how you can answer questions when you have that option, sometimes, at least in future expansions, the side quests can be well worth it.
One of the best examples is playing Dragoon when going into the Heavensward story. The interactions with Estinien are so different due to prior interactions and the overall tone of most of the Ishgardians, from what I remember, is far more respectful due to your actions and title as a Dragoon. the nice things about side quests and job quests is that the NPCs tend to remember you as well, if you meet them again.

@Jay Bee He's hardly handicapped by waiting to do his quests. You spam unleash a lot in leveling dungeons, so you don't really miss blood weapon (only works on single target) or edge of darkness (single target version of Flood of darkness). These are tools you want to use higher level, but there isn't a make or break quest skill from 30-50.

i played the entirety of FFXIV in japanese dubs, but i have to admit that Count Edmond de Fortemps sounds amazing in English Dubs, its so surprising how good this is.. its so good in fact that i might just play it again on English Dubs, thank god FFXIV has a NewGame+ feature that allows players like me to re-experience the story of the game all over again at will, doubt any other mmo would ever do something like that

When I saw the trailer to Shadowbringers I changed my main from Blackmage. Though I've decided to go back to Blackmage for Endwalker; Dark Knight is & will always be, my number one tank class.

Yep. I’m an MMO casual despite slowly working my way through FF14 for a few years, I’ve only recently worked out maximising oGCD stuff. Asmongold obvs a veteran of a genre but it’s cool seeing him do things it took me ages to work out myself
Is that like using skills that aren't on the same cooldowns as basic attacks and weaving them before you can use the other ones again?

Natsuko Ishikawa, the person who wrote the Dark Night questline, is a God damn amazing story writer. She wrote the story for the Rogue Questline, the Dark Knight Questline, 2.0 Coerthas, 3.2 and 3.4 Main Scenario, the Doman half of Stormblood, and was the lead writer for Shadowbringers. They are also maintaining the position of lead writer for Endwalker. They are very dynamic with their stories and writing styles from Dark and mysterious, to twisted and upsetting, to just down right fun and hilarous. When you hit the ceiling for how far you can go, I would highly advise checking out the other jobs and blue quests, if for nothing more but the stories and extra content.

The Dark Knight definitely has the coolest story in the game as it's really the only one that shines a light on how you're treated by the world and how you really feel about it. What's interesting is that the 50-60 quests were just "okay" as they kind of dealt with something else but the 60-70 quests were again AMAZING as they further expand your knowledge of the Dark Knight and leave you with the best defensive ability in the game.
Yeah 50 to 60 was a little bit weaker but the level 80 quest ending was my favorite moment in ffxiv.
I can't remember where I saw this but as a DRK main myself I can't help but agree.

@@pawsouth2897 i honestly feel like the way SE balances the game is pretty fair as it is with the exception of PLD and WHM. They both do way too much damage for how good they are at healing and damage mitigation imo. They either should up the damage on other healers and tanks (my preferred method) or nerf the damage of PLD and WHM specifically which id rather they didn't. Nerfs aren't fun for anyone in this case.
This is honestly one of the best quests I have ever played in a any videogame ever. It's just so badass!
Fact: If you doing a DRK job quest lv.45 and your faction are Maelstrom faction the soldier will called you with a rank that you have.
If they ever bring out max faction rank it might be fun doing the newgame+ to hear them say that

I remember finally getting to Ishgard and unlocking DRK as well, excellent quest line and much fun was had. But, DRK was much, much more fun to play in HW. Since its my main class I've played much less the last two expansions.

I loved the fact that I played as an au ra girl when meeting sidurgu and when he tell us the story of au ra and what the temple knights did to their people on first meeting I was like “oh so it makes even more sense to be an au ra dark knight lol I chose well XD”

i still love how the dialogue between the player and their darkside ties into the player unlocking living dead.
for those that don't know, living dead is the dark knights "oh shit i need to not die" button. it does this by killing the player.
this activates the living dead status and your darkness will take over, you have 10 seconds to be restored to full health and can not take damage. if healers fail to restore your health to maximum, then you actually die.
it's considered the worst one of the tank's "oh shit" buttons, but it is still by far a cool ass concept. also if there's anything that i said that needs correcting then go for it.
Actually, you CAN take damage. You just have to receive enough healing that you would have been back to max.

DRK is gonna be rough until 72. Feels rather squishy until Blackest Night at 70, no AoE combo until 72.
I'm afraid Dark Knight is not a good class to play for Asmond.
As Fray stated, tapping into the darkness for power is good- but only if you do not lose yourself in it.
Asmond has years of darkness and anger built up inside of him, will he be able to harness it's power? Or succumb to it, taking each and everyone with him?
I think it was fitting for Asmon to play Warrior all this time up until now (would have been cool to see him get to the part in the story where he meets the Warrior of Darkness as a Warrior himself) but I'm glad he's having a good time with Dark Knight as well now.
