      Hi Kathy, thank you very much. This is a very old video of mine and terrible audio but it was when I first started filming my videos.
      Just to note that I do have a full video out at the moment on how to paint a Robin in watercolour, so plenty of feathers! If you want to try it out part on is on RUclips, see ruclips.net/video/6A6ThwBEd6g/видео.html and Parts 2&3 are on my Patreon channel (see description) but all still free to watch etc. Hope this help, Paul :-)

    Thank you very much. You have a gentle voice and a lovely light touch. I also love painting birds, but till this little video my feathers were just random strokes in an approximatr direction. Now I have a new insight. What is watercolour white? Is it another name for goache? Regards from Louise Mc Nish

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  9 лет назад

      Louise Mc Nish Hi Louise, firstly thank you very much for your lovely compliments, I hope my technique helps you to get to grips with painting feathers. If you check out my other videos on my RUclips name, I have completed another two, one of painting a beak and another for painting a Buzzards eye.
      I do use watercolour white quite a lot especially for highlights. This saves reserving white areas of the paper using masking fluid, with my technique doing this with masking fluid is an impossibly task. :-) Watercolour white is similar to gouache but less opaque. Gouache has much more pigment than watercolour so it is less transparent. Hope this helps. Paul

  • @joys4524
    @joys4524 4 года назад +2

    Thank you again , Paul, for you wonderful tutelage. You said watercolour white. I have the Chinese white, found in most palettes, Titanium white watercolour and white Gouache. To which one are you referring, please?

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  4 года назад

      Hi Joy, thank you for watching one of my older, crackly videos! LOL Yes, you will have to check the manufacture's website for the Chinese white and titanium white for the opacity rating. You will need a white that is 'opaque' and not semi-opaque or semi-transparent to make this work.
      As for white Gouache that is ideal due to Gouache being and opaque medium. Paul :-)

    • @joys4524
      @joys4524 4 года назад +1

      Wildlife in Watercolour, Paul, I have all 3 so will try them to see. I only just learnt that I can use white after all. Many watercolourist stay we can/‘t use white or black paint; that the white is the paper and that is so hard to do., I don’t mind mixing a dark for black but having the paper be the white is so counter intuitive. Thanks again.😊

  • @donnaryan71
    @donnaryan71 9 лет назад +3

    Thank you for this, much more helpful than all the 'speed' paintings! One question, how do you get the white highlight/feather lines to stay white? I find if I paint white fur (thin lines, like you are doing) over darker colours, it turns out looking a bit chalky, no matter what consistency I use. I have tried using white watercolour and gouache, but in my experience so far (fairly new at this) only white acrylic seems to work, but then that looks too stark and a bit gloopy. There must be a way! What are you doing that I am not? Lovely paintings, too (looked at your website). Thanks, cheers, Donna

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  9 лет назад +2

      Donna Ryan Hi Donna, I have noticed when teaching that my students watercolour white paint can vary in ability depending the manufacturer. I tend to use SAA watercolour white which seems to work really well, plus I keep it fairly thick in the pallet thinned enough to about toothpaste consistency. So thick enough to stand out and not vanish when dry but runny enough to create fine lines.
      I have occasionally used gouache and find it very similar to watercolour white but much more opaque and richer pigment. But don't worry if you resort to white acrylic (thinned down), I used this quite a lot and am currently covering much of a cat portrait I am working on with this! :-)
      As you know watercolour white is a pain if you want to add a wash over the top and simply washes away or turns muddy. This is ok if this is your final layer, however if you need a colour wash over the top this is where white acrylic comes into play for me. As you know acrylic 'stays put' and allows a wash of colour over the top but use it sparingly and with an old detail brush (don't ruin your good watercolour brushes with it).
      Hope this help Donna.
      Paul :-)

    • @donnaryan71
      @donnaryan71 9 лет назад +2

      The Devon Artist Hi Paul, thank you for your prompt and thorough reply. Is SAA watercolour a brand? I have a variety of brands, but the white gouache I tried is M. Graham. If you haven't already, do consider putting together online classes for an appropriate fee (what the market will bear, I suppose, considering most people expect things to be free these days because certainly, so much is available for free but it could be worth your while); as Louise says, you have a gentle approach and pleasant to listen to, which makes all the difference in engaging audience attention for the whole video. Thanks again.

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  9 лет назад

      Donna Ryan Hi again Donna, you say some lovely things, thank you very much! The SAA paint I use is their own brand including the white paint, here is a link to the item on their shop: www.saa.co.uk/saa-artists-watercolour-opaque-white-14ml.html
      I have been thinking about setting up online courses and will be considering this once I have redesigned my wwwdevonartist.co.uk website to try and make it mobile friendly. This is a complete redesign so it will take me a while, something I prefer to do myself. :-)
      So watch this space and I will get there within a couple of months or so.
      Paul :-)

    • @donnaryan71
      @donnaryan71 9 лет назад +1

      The Devon Artist Hi again Paul, thanks for that. SAA watercolour is not available in Australia, so unless you can recommend something else? I have two of your tutorials and I am looking forward to getting started on those. Thanks, cheers, Donna

    • @TheDevonArtist
      @TheDevonArtist  9 лет назад

      Donna Ryan Hi Donna, There are so many manufacturers out there but my best advice would be to stick with a well known brand such as Winsor & Newton, Daler Rowney, Rembrandt just to name a few. All you need do is choose a good artist quality 'opaque' white from a good known maker, at least you will have confidence in the product. Just for an option try www.winsornewton.com/uk/shop/water-colour/professional-water-colour/professional-water-colour-titanium-white-0-17-us-fl-oz-5ml-tube-0102644
      This isn't the cheapest but in my eyes it's always wise to buy the best you can afford. the pigmentation inside the more expensive paints tend to be richer in colour and filled with much more pigment, so they should last longer and give you better colours.
      A big thank you for buying my two tutorials, you are more than welcome to email me if you need larger images to work from and above all.......have fun! :-) paul@devonartist.co.uk
      Take care,
      Paul

      Hi Barbie, some other watercolourists do use white for highlights, especially for those lovely whites we see on waves. Hi Tracey, with watercolours I tend to gradually build the colours up using weak washes. This way I have much more control over the richness of those colours. Every weak wash you add over a dry one, will look richer and richer. Also called the glazing technique. It gives you a little more chance to fix any errors along the way.
      Look through those details within your Blue Tit photo, and work out the colours behind the scene. Then add those lovely details over the top. Paul 🎨
