Hey all! Like I mentioned in the episode, this is my first full solo interview! I was a bit nervous as I've been listening to James for years, but he was such an awesome guest and I think we still got some really fun answers! Hope you all enjoy!
This episode was a lot of fun! With this and Ellis's interview with Retrospket, it is very cool to see what y’all are personally passionate about. It definitely translates into the interviews.
Thanks for the interview, Andrew - I think you did a great job! I'm also delighted to know that I am thoroughly average when it comes to typing the alphabet.
Loved the Show! Its always a blast to listen to amazing people, I didn't knew before :) Next time I would suggest to put up a monitor right next to the camera with the guest, so Andrew would naturally look more to the Camera, for peek production quality ^^
Also this is so funny. I thought to myself "Huh, I definitely listened to that episode" and went back to it noticing that the playhead was right as you finished giving the last answers and before you said that so I missed it by like 5 seconds 😅
1 request to add , Can you have a TV monitor on the wall when you guys are doing over zoom podcast. So that we can see both the studio host and the guest at the same time .
Really cool to see Andrew get this opportunity to interview such an inspirational podcast. I remember listening to podquiz in high school a lot but I'll have to get back in to it
Well done, Andrew! In this spirit of constructive feedback, there are some questions that felt closed rather than open and I wonder if there are more opportunities for the interviewee to take the lead in the conversation. For example, when asking how he comes up with categories, you provided a few options to him, but maybe just asking how he comes up with categories is enough to get the ball rolling? Then you could follow the "leads" he provides in his answer if time allows? I've never heard of PodQuiz but I will definitely be listening now!
This is excellent to hear, that's one of the better podcasts, and I believe it's because it's so simple and well set up. It just "works". Congratulations to James for keeping this going so long, you sir are the best 🙂 As for improvements, only one comes to mind Andrew. Please do a proper split screen, I love to see the immediate reactions from the folks being interviewed and that allows that to happen. Great job otherwise, look forward to more 😀
Interesting idea! Maybe we could introduce the split screen kind of like the old center wide camera where we incorporate all 3. With the delay of remote interviews you probably aren't missing much in terms of reactions to questions because there's generally a bit of a gap between question/answer.
@@Manganellia1 I didn't know that. Still, as it's in a video format, it's a bit less jarring not moving back and forth between the host and guest, hopefully you can do the old style again, it's old 'cause it works after all 😁
Hey Andrew. Great job mate. Only feedback I would give you is (if possible) to try get or let the interviewee talking more. Some of your questions felt long and overall kinda felt like more of the episode was listening to you. Looking forward to seeing your next one! PS. Thanks to you I’m a HUGE Cholula fan now. PPS. Carry the one 😅
I agree, I think it was a mix of me trying to prove that I am a fan of the show + trying to make sure there's enough substance for a response which James obviously didn't need. I think I need to shorten the question, and then have maybe the 2nd half of what I'd say to add on if needed.
@@Manganellia1 might be overthinking it I think mate, which is understandable being first time solo. I think your aim is to try and make it as realistic to a real life conversation, but knowing if and when you need to try extract a little more out of guest. You do it already on the Friday eps. Do some practice with Claire and just pick a completely random topic. Anyway, you wanted feedback, and I want to help 🫡
I really loved the episode, I can tell that he was very nervous at the beginning, don't know how much you talk to him before start recording could use some time to calm down the nerves to make some chat about it how he started in a more deliberate way and not like a direct to question. You did a great job I can tell you invested some time and effort on the questions. But also can tell that you have more experience with the waveform podcast and he is just a regular person that does this for a hobby, but I liked great work. And I am trying to be constructive and positive.
Thank you! We spoke for a little beforehand and James is such a nice guy that I felt very comfortable talking to him immediately, I think I was more nervous about pacing with questions and getting into a flow. Easy to write things down and how you expect something to flow, but then questions need to be re-arranged on the fly and I think I got in my head a little which calmed down a little in.
Keep up the good work guys! Love the hard work! Also one small detail, the iPod in the thumbnail is not 20 years old. The thumbnail is picturing a 7th generation iPod Classic and one that is actually 20 years old is the 4th generation iPod Classic (iPod Photo). Just a little nitpick I had but it doesn't really matter, I thought I would put it out there anyway (:
Um you asked for feedback. Enjoyed learning about PodQuiz and looking forward to trying it out. Your enthusiasm for it was genuine. Seeing both interviewer and interviewee on the same screen at the same time would be nice. Also it was a long hour for me to wait for the end to go and try out the PodQuiz. Maybe a quick sample at the beginning would be nice. Always enjoy waveform.
Great episode! I might have to go look up a few episodes and see how hard it grabs me, I do love a good trivia show. I think you did pretty well for your first solo interview as well, keep it up. About the only criticism I can offer, and it’s not a huge deal in this case, is something that frequently happens when someone is interviewing someone they’re a fan of; it’s hard not to be affirming when they share a cool detail and that leads to a bit of cross talk. Kevin Smith mentioned this about the first time he interviewed Stan Lee, he just kept repeating, “Yeah? Yeah? Awesome. Cool. Yeah? Sweet…” the entire time Stan was giving his answers, which made the audio guys recording the interview a bit nuts. Again, very mild criticism, I don’t think it detracted from this interview, just something to keep in mind for the future. Can’t wait to see what he writes for the trivia questions this Friday.
That final starring the computer?!?!?! WHAT?!?! ... brilliant interview. thoroughly enjoyed it. Andrew... brilliant. I remember hearing your voice (voice only podcasts),,,, and later putting a face to the name later.... pls bring such niche players to the wider audience. Discoverablity.....
Andrew Very nice.Very Sweet personality he has and I have picked up from Tech jumping in to many Podcasts.Although I still love RUclips.I have really started listening to many different.Indcluding News,But Thanks for sharing what else is out there. Thanks again enjoyed.💯✌️
2:00 into the podcast, and I feel it’d be so cool if the camera panned and James is sitting in the place of David! I’m hoping that happens in a few seconds.
Curious what other people think - but having Andrew look down at the computer the whole time feels odd. Wonder if it’s possible to put the guest behind the camera we are looking through on a TV, so we can get a slightly more head on view?
When it came out that PodQuiz is audio only then I knew why I've never heard it. For some reason I just don't like audio podcasts I find I lose interest very quickly and that's even for a podcaster or topic I'm interested in. For me having video and seeing the people speak keeps my interest, even when I have the podcast going while working on something else. I think came about when cable TV and MTV and SciFi channel was on all the time. I was a programmer who worked from home and instead of listening to music I had a small TV next to my computer desk and would have MTV or SciFi channel going in the background as I worked. I guess I liked hearing voices in the background like I was working in a office.
I like this format as an every now and then, but I will say an hour-long fanboy interview with this guy was a challenge - candidly he was way low-energy. No big judgment, but an hour is too much for this level of chill to keep me attentive. I WILL check out Podquiz tho… never heard of it.
SUGGESTION: James' video is captured via a low-res laptop camera, right? In this day and age, everyone has access to a decent mobile phone primary camera. In the future Zoom interviews, could you please ask the guests to use their mobile phone to capture an additional high-res footage? They can send this over to you and use that footage in the edit and so the jump between the guest and the host are more sufferable. Good job, Andrew!
random podcast thought. what happens the day RSS gets deprecated, i wonder. i have to assume Apple is thinking about this. it seems like one of the only things that Apple doesn’t have their firm controlling grip on. would make sense to control it further so they can add cool features and possibly advertising. does Apple start a user powered CDN like RUclips?

the cadence was good and it felt much more conversational rather than interview style or narrative style…which i prefer.

I was a guest host for a podquiz episode 878, and I shouted out the MKBHD crew for introducing me to it!
This is so cool!

Noo I got unpinned!
Had to check which day it is real quick
haha same, was like. uh it's friday? holdup 🤣
We need an episode with the entire team or most of it. Studio Podcast, maybe post it on the studio channel to intirgue people.
Thank you, Andrew. I'm going on a road trip later this year and I can't wait to have PodQuiz playing the entire time
Super-fan interviews genuinely humble podcast pioneer. What a truly enjoyable bonus episode that was. Well played, Andrew!
really happy that Andrew gets to solo an interview
