Seeing Chuck Tatum in these videos is mind-blowing...he was born in 1926, so in this particular video (in 2007) he was 81. He appears 60 tops, physically and mentally. Sadly, he left us in 2014 just shy of 88....seems he could’ve easily passed 100 and I wish he had. What a great American....
Merci pour votre message faisant malheureusement part de la disparition de ce valeureux US vétérans Chuck Tatum (RIP à lui et à tous ses braves frères d'armes disparus.
He looks extremely young! wonder what his secret of youth was.
Oh no, look up pictures of Chuck Tatum at the premiere of The Pacific. He's in his mid 80s, but genuinely does look like he's only in his 50s even today. He is a legend - Iwo Jima Veteran, professional race car driver, and the man who found the fabled Fountain of Youth.
GOD BLESS YOU MR.TATUM .......
AND ALL of our UNITED STATES MARINES.............
Thank you Chuck! Semper Fi!
God Bless this Brave Marine!!
You can tell by his mannerisms and the occasional quivering of his voice as he described events on Iwo that part of him was still on that island. Chuck lived his life to the fullest and yes, he looks so young and robust, but inside you know he had to pay a heavy price. Rest In Peace Chuck.
Utmost respect to all frontline fighters of ww2. You can see he's still very shaken 60 something years ago. Hell is undescribable with words and unforgettable.
Thank you for your Service!
I’m going to say the same thing a couple of other people have said which is that this man does not look 81 years old! And he’s been through a war! Genetics.
Thank you for your service sir.
great story, this man seems so young to have fought in ww2,
The real deal a hero that saw too much war.
I am Canadian. May god bless this man and all US Marines. I simply can't imagine the personal cost these fierce warriors endured.
Wow he looks and sounds really well for probably in his 80s
I read his book
...would that I could have shaken his hand or bought him a beer
RIP, Sir
Damn , a first hand account of John Basilone . This is a rare piece of film .
Great story. The P-51 aircraft that were able to fly off that island were instrumental in taking out the defensive aircraft that the Japanese had over their main island. That, and the fact that damaged B-29s could make emergency landings hundreds of miles short of the fields they had departed, saved a lot of lives.
That is exactly the strategic reason for invading Iwo Jima. From B-29 bases on Saipan and Tinian to Tokyo was 3,000 miles round trip.
Read his book Red Blood Black Sand
I only knew Chuck as sports car builder and driver back in the late 79 I Marine was a Reservist on Active duty on the west coast and after getting off of work when to the racetrack and because of time still in my Uniform and after that we were friends before this but after he found out i was a Marine he when out of his way to help a young guy with my race car at the track and i never knew he had been at Iwo till one night after a few beers i saw his Marine cap he was wearing and told my Dad had been a Marine in Korea at the time i don't think he talk much about his time there and even less with with non Marines
I knew him also. My stepsister and his daughter were best friends. I met Chuck numerous times and he never mentioned Iwo Jima. He was quite a car guy. As I recall he was the sales manager at a Pontiac dealership in Stockton.
R.I.P Marine
wow, what a story....................
Looks so young
Chuck and my dad were close friends after the war. They ended up building race cars together.
@digger678 yes he does. and we shoud all age so well. i am 26, but i don't mind saying he is darned handsome.
I know i am 26 and married so i shouldn't be saying this, but i am struck at how very handsome this hero still is at his age.
He looks PTSD AF, can't imagine what he went through all the years.
@digger678 he's youthful in appearance but he is older than he looks
@wadyano Thanks....He deserves to have many more birthdays and great health..:o)
He is all the time moving the hands and he does have some extrange ticks... Looks like the effects of war
The man was about 84 years old at the time of this filming I think. Old people tremble a bit. Sadly, he passed away last summer 2014.
Yes, I know, but sometimes these movements are caused by the war, of course it can also be because of the age. At least he is now resting, thanks for the info
It was sad because trembling notwithstanding, he looked and sounded great for his age. I thought he would live to be 100 or more. I did get to see him at this speaking engagement. He lived about an hour's drive from where I do.
Nice
I’d say it’s nerves due to speaking in front of a large group, which he may not have been used to.
@digger678 he's 81 years old.
@misscorey2 not possible. he said the war was over 60 years ago. in the 70's the wat would have been 30 something years ago.
@djdazarama so they sold bottle waters made of plastic in the 70s
exactly. the war ended in 45 which was nearly 67 years ago. which would make it impossible for this video to have been from the 1970s whats tur point?
Is he nervous, or does he have Parkinson’s?
He looks too young to a marine from that time
