In the 99 years since its incorporation, every mayor of Hamtramck has been Polish American. That will end January 2, 2022 in Hamtramck's centenary year, when Amer Ghailib will be inaugurated, along with an entirely Muslim city council.

I grew up in Hamtramck left when I was 25 years old and got married. When I visit Michigan I always spend a day in Hamtramck. I am 79 years of age and would love to come back but things are so expensive now. Bur it will always be home to me.

People complaining about Middle Eastern people moving into Hamtramck are missing a pretty key point-- Middle Eastern people moved in, because a ton of the Polish-American people moved OUT. You can't complain that 'things ain't quite what they used to be' when you ditched Hamtramck for Sterling Heights and Troy 20+ years ago. A new population has moved in and they have every right to change whatever they want to reflect the current community. You want them to keep all the Polish stuff so the people in the 'burbs can come visit twice a year?

Christians still live in Muslim countries because those countries were originally either Christian, majority Christian, or allowed people of different faiths to live peacefully together in them before the Muslims came in and took over.
As for Emir Abdulkader, unless he was providing the Christians with protection so that he wouldn't have to spend his time and money fighting them, he must have had to live under very tight security 24/7 for the rest of his life as what he was doing would have been directly against the teachings of the Koran and the hadith:
"Oh you who believe! Take not the Jews and Christians as Auliya (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.) for they are but Auliya to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as Auliya, then surely he is one of them" (Qur'an 5:51).
"Thus you are ordered by Allah to continue in carrying out Jihad (violent warfare) against the disbeliever (all non-Muslims) till they embrace (convert to) Islam or at least COME UNDER YOUR PROTECTION (emphasis added). This chapter starts off in a similar manner to the verse you mentioned, but makes it clear that the ruling of not making auliya with Jews or Christians is only if they are fighting against you in religion. Imam Ibn Kathir says about this verse in a Chapter Heading titled "The Permissibly of being kind to disbelievers who do not fight against the religion (Islam)" He quotes a Hadith from Imam Ahmad's Musnad where Asma' bint Abu Bakr said, "My mother, who was an idolatress at the time, came to me during the Treaty of Peace, the Prophet conducted with the Quraysh. I came to the Prophet and said, `O Allah's Messenger! My mother came visiting, desiring something from me, should I treat her with good relations' The Prophet said, "Keep Good Relations with your mother" Imam Ibn Kathir to end this off mentions an ayat from Surah al Hujrat, which states "The just, who are fair in their decisions, families and those under their authority, will be on podiums made of light, to the right of the Throne." giving us an indication that not only is it permissible in Islam to keep good relations to non muslims, but it is highly rewardable as well.

Also to mention, my apologies for the lengthy comment, it will probably be a pain to read, but also I just want to point out, though Muslims around the world may not suggest it, we come in peace. I hope your enlightened about Islam in a positive manner, my recommendation is that if you really want to learn what Islam truly is, read the works of Al - Ghazali, or listen to people such as Shaikh Hamza Yusuf, Shaikh Faraz Rabbani, or Shaikh Bilal Assad. Daniel Mc Dowell No, considering the Quran literally says to tolerate all other religions because they are from people of the book, with the exception of 6th century Arabian paganism of course. Sure Muslims can be bad, because they’re people, we as humans just need to learn from the past, hopefully Muslims don’t disregard others. A good way to do this is by sticking true to the religion, as indicated by what’s going on in the aforementioned town. I’d reason that America has done so well in the last few decades because it’s done the most to uphold the values that God, Allah, has prescribed to us, more so than any other “Muslim” nation. Hopefully we don’t compromise or forego those values by turning to radical and intolerant forms of thought. Americans are not an intolerant people, we are just easily misguided as history has taught us is all, the best way to combat this condition is to educate ourselves. Too many a people do not understand what they speak of but seem quite stubborn in their claims. For example so much misinformation and confusion has been spread that some people actually believe that Muslims want to implement sharia law upon non Muslims, in order to understand why this idea is fundamentally flawed, one must actually understand what sharia even is. Sharia is mostly interpretational, scholars have been arguing over it for over a thousand some years, it is fluid, so I’ll try to give my best rough explanation of how I view it. There are two types of sharia in my opinion, state legalistic sharia, and personal sharia. State legalistic sharia is just the laws of the nation in which one lives, this could be interpreted from the Quran depending on the state, so for me that’d be the constitution, whereas personal sharia is a general guideline from the Quran that I follow daily like not eating pork, that I should pray 5 times a day to our creator, and being a kind person to my fellow humans. So basically sharia already exists in the US through me not eating pork upon myself, in coupling with the constitution, which is also my sharia in a sense. Sharia varies from place to place because that’s how humans work. People think that sharia means cutting hands off just because Saudi Arabia does that, which is frankly wrong, but again that proves how people don’t know what sharia really even is. They also never know what urf is, which I won’t be explaining because it’ll take a while and I have to sleep. To your comment about intolerance, Islam is not intolerant, the pious Muslim will never get that kind of message from it, the bad Muslim however, will. Sadly, like you said, humans can be bad and try to justify their actions with religious words of higher esteem than their morals to give them legitimacy. On a separate note, we Muslims should also probably study our religion a bit before we act; I see quite a lack of education but abundance of self righteousness among some Muslims who only apply the religion to themselves when it is convenient.
