- This excerpt from the 2012 documentary 'The Artist Is Present' covers the incredible break-up story of Marina Abramović and Ulay.
Initially, when the couple planned the trip, they intended to get married at the center of the Great Wall of China. However, after finally acquiring all the authorization required from the Chinese government, they decided to change their plan. What started out as a marriage celebration turned into last goodbyes for the couple
In 1988, Abramović would start walking the wall from the east while Ulay would start from the west. It would take three months for the couple to meet in the middle, where they would break up and go their separate ways. The couple titled the piece 'The Lovers'.

@@beautifulbutterfly6669 Ulay cheated first, and then Marina cheated on him with a mutual friend. And then during the time it took for Ulay and Marina to negotiate with China for permission to do the Great Wall walk, Ulay got his translator pregnant, lol.
Also the colour choice of blue and orange when meeting each other neutralise themselves in dead cold grey.
Lesson: Don't fck a common friend and translator.

How nice it must be to have a relationship end with both parties in a neutrally agreed, mature ending with decent humanity and understanding. If only it could be this way for everyone. I know i have that capacity but those in which i have personally been involved with have not.

Romance that does not work out can do so much DAMAGE to people. It is like a fire that has to be managed. These were such passionate gorgeous-looking people. Hindsight usually shows us what we cannot see in the middle of the HEAT. I am so GRATEFUL for my platonic connections in life. Crazy romance can make one crazy and so unbalanced. It is also possible to love more than person at a time which really messes up one's balance, even if it is only emotional. What I have learned the very hard way is simple - just be careful WHO we love. LIKING people is so much easier to deal with in LIFE.

it’s like the marriage took 8 years to organise, and in the meantime so many things changed between them. by the time it was ready, they no longer wanted to get married but they decided to do the piece anyways as farewell instead.

Part 2: marina hires a woman to play herself marina, who then stalks Ulay who then hires an actor to have sex with marina - the two actors have a relationship and realise how much they hate ulay and marina and have them both kidnapped. They escape. The actors get married and live happily ever after. Marina and ulay take each other to court and issue restraining orders on each other. However this does not cover actors playing them.
