- Peter Jackson is returning to Middle-Earth and is on board to produce a brand new Lord of the Rings film! The working title for the film is The Lord of the Rings The Hunt for Gollum, and this is going to be directed and starred by Andy Serkis, and is planned to release in 2026. What are your thoughts on this news??
It’s frankly something we don’t need and nobody, NOBODY wanted. We already have over 2 movies with a bunch of Gollum content. WHO really wanted to see a story on how Gollum was captured by Aragorn as a feature length film?
We’ve seen major issues today with Hollywood: they have no good ideas left, and even when they bring the right people to work a project it does not guarantee success.
The subject matter of this film makes it evident that Hollywood has no clue how to properly execute the Middle Earth IP anymore, and their announcement that they want more films here after HfG shows they need something. Hollywood isn’t our friend, they don’t care about good entertainment, they are a business like any other (they’re looking for $$$, which is fine, but we need to stop making a big deal about projects they’re taking on today).
Yes, there have been some good products to come out of entertainment in recent years, but they are few and far between. I’d say there is around an 85% chance anything that’s announced for production will end up bad right now.
Honestly, with the state of the entertainment industry, and the history of what we’ve gotten both with Rings of Power and the Hobbit (timelines aside, Jackson could not save that series, and it shows it can very well happen again), I just want Hollywood to leave Middle Earth alone. I am tired of seeing IPs I enjoy get demolished by modern writing/movie making (i.e., Star Wars, Star Trek, Wheel of Time, D.C./Marvel, Ghost Busters, etc.).

I'm going to be honest, I hate this. It feels like Skywalker syndrome, where we're just stuck making pointless movies about the same familiar characters over and over again. Tolkien's Legendarium spans thousands of years, yet WBs brilliant idea is to give Gollum a movie, or Aragorn a movie. What wasted potential, man. Having access to Tolkien's Legendarium should have been a golden goose, but this just feels like Disney's Star Wars unwillingness to do anything outside of what's familliar.

I respect the optimism, I really do, but...we've seen what happens when people try making a movie/tv show without viable source material.

Peter Jackson was brought in late to work on The Hobbit, as he originally wasn't meant to work on it. The Hobbit films aren't the greatest but I think he did the best he could with such a tight time constraint. I think this time he won't have that constraint, which is more promising
@@CapturedInWordsPeter Jackson isn't infallible though. It was Jackson's idea to make Hobbit into 3 movies. It was also Phillipa Boyens idea to add a love triangle with Legolas.

Viggo and McKellen returning is their guarantee to solidify themself as a true successors and to distance themselves from amazon, basically its a stamp of quality and continuity. No way they will recast them, its WBs only chance to show themselves as the only "legitimate" lotr franchise

None of these films/LOTR projects are needed. Most of the material people are going off of are notes/appendices information. The extended cut of LoTR is a stellar, complete series. These projects barely have enough material to go off of. I don’t care the “right” people are working some of this, it’s just an overt attempt to milk a franchise because Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.
I have 0 faith that any project moving forward would be good. I was initially interested with the original Amazon concept of a miniseries-esque show wherein each episode covered things like “The Hunt for Gollum”. It was initially supposed to be short and nice filler for things that occurred in the Third Age.
Now, I cannot believe this will be good. The Hobbit trilogy was a mess, Rings of Power is just fanfiction masquerading as a real Middle Earth series, and no other good content has come out since.
Leave LoTR be please. Leave Middle Earth, only to reflect back on a superior, possibly the last great movie trilogy to come into existence in the last 30 years.
I'm only lukewarm about this idea. Don't get me wrong, Gollum is a good character and Andy Serkis plays Gollum VERY well but an entire Gollum centric movie might be a little much. If they use the idea of showing the dual hunt for Gollum as seen from both sides it could be an exciting movie BUT the stakes aren't there. We know how the hunt eventually turns out. One thing is certain, it would take a lot of mistakes and other fumbling to make anything worse than Amazon has done.
Maybe we will see the fights the elves and dwarves had during the main storyline.
Ok, as much as I would love for Viggo to reprise his role as Aragorn, just hear me out because I have an idea for his replacement if he can’t; Sebastian Stan. Sebastian would be perfect I think because he can bring such a great depth to the character, but him with long hair and a beard looks very similar to Aragorn in my opinion…
Sebastian could’ve played young Luke Skywalker too

Hi there - New subscriber here. Have you tried the Sun Eater series by Christopher Ruocchio? I'm no sci-fi gal and this had me hooked! The prose is exceptional with so many beautiful quotes, and the world building is like no other, and the battle scenes will have you reading pages on end in one breath. It's a Name of the Winds meets Dune kind of book. It's told from a first person POV so it's easy to digest and understand. And the protagonist goes through so much he'll break your heart, but he's also such a badass and you'll root for him like no other character. Please give it a try!

Liv Tyler was very young in the movies she’s in her 40’s now. She could do fine. But her without Vigo would be weird.
Idk i think recasts might be best all around. Even Orlando Bloom is getting old. He already looked pretty different in The Hobbit.

They clearly didn't learn from the Gollum game. No one wanted it, no one cared about it and it was not needed.
They should have just made a trilogy of the rise and fall of the Witch-King of Angmar. It even follows the boring and cliche rule of almost every story where the good struggle against evil at first but ultimately in the end they win

Honestly anything will be better than rings of power. I can’t believe with such a high budget they made a trash show. As someone who fell in love with the books in 6th grade and remember the first 3 movies coming out when I was younger I’m super excited about this. Wasn’t much of a fan of the hobbit movies but I understand why they couldn’t make them as good. Really looking forward to this movie
I won’t be going to a theater to pay watching this movie. When my local library gets the DVD I might watch it then. Or, if it shows up on a streaming service that I have.

@@wordupninja The Hobbit is much better than other recent fantasy adaptations and as Jay said, Peter Jackson wasn't originally part of the Hobbit. He got brought on late but still had to meet the same deadline.

Regardless of the studio decisions to do stuff like turn a barely 200 page book into a trilogy, Jackson coming in later, etc. you have to acknowledge that this group is really only good at adapting existing source material, not adding to it. This Hunt for Gollum story does not have a lot of source material to it, so they’re going to have to fluff it up to make it a feature film. There are not a lot of good signs here and contemporary Hollywood trends do not bode well for this project.
Agree that Gollum is not what I wanted either. He's my least favorite character. Also I don't think I could deal with a recast Aragorn.

Highly doubt it will be THAT good. The Hobbit trilogy was barely serviceable. Nothing since has been any good. They don’t have a lot of source material to go off of.
Everything I need to know is that Gollum works as part of the story, but is going to be awful as the focal point.

LOTR was amazing, the Hobbit was good not great, S1 of the Amazon show was the biggest piece of sh!t I've ever seen, so guess we'll see... I'm hyped though 👍
I'm a huge fan of the LOTR extended trilogy. I hope this film is only one film that's 90 minutes long with no exposition, a small cast, show not tell, and no flashbacks. Also, absolutely ignore the Tolkien Foundation types and all their feminist essays
A Gollum movie, eh? That Hunt for Gollum fan film was OK, and I really don't think the story needs feature-length treatment, anyway. I think I will pass, especially after what they did to _The Hobbit_ and all of the unneeded embellishments. _War of the Rohirrim_ could work, though, and my nerd-background has me hoping that the dialogue will all be in Old English 😅
Serkis is about the only LOTR veteran to have done any notable work in the past decade.

it will suck, the current mandatory requirements for Hollywood right now will guarantee this will be impossible to be good. It could be good with these people in charge. However, I think it is impossible to be good with the current requirements placed on Hollywood (DEI). Sooooooo.... that isn't the reason it will suck, it will suck because there are no good Hollywood wrighters left but if you got this far you will know it will suck because of the writers in Hollywood and DEI. Long live the fellowship and go watch FNT
While I agree that Hollywood is a mess right now, not everything being produced is bad. I'm sure this will be better than what Amazon is doing, and I think having Jackson, Serkis, and so many of the original writers is a good sign.
Maybe DEI could teach you how to spell.
@CapturedInWords i agree with you, but there will probably be someone with lots of power breathing down their necks saying "you need x, y, and z" and whatever those things are will make it impossible for the show to be good. It may possibly be okay, but not good.
@@CapturedInWords i disagree. Just having the “right people” involved in the project does not mean it will be good. Look at Doctor Who right now. It was failing for years, and with the most recent season, they brought back Russel T. Davies, who was the man responsible for New Who, catapulting it into insane levels of popularity in the modern era. Yet, he being onboard only further ruined the series and now fans are most disgruntled than ever.
The fact of the matter is this new Gollum film has very little source material to base it on. We have seen Peter Jackson and crew do amazing things with products that have existing source material, but not so much with inventing new material. Jackson didn’t save the Hobbit trilogy after studio interference, and much of the filler he put into that mess was not that great.
I love the Jackson LoTR franchise, I think it’s one of the finest points of cinema history and especially for book adaptations. That being said, this whole situation reeks of Hollywood being out of ideas, and wanting to milk another IP into the ground.
I agree that, so far, The Rings of Power is a mess, but I think I hate the Hobbit movies more. I accept Peter Jackson came in last minute to direct them but they're so bad compared to the Lord of the Rings movies. Based on that, I question your idea that he will somehow rescue the franchise. As some of the other commenters have said, this is just a naked cash grab and is unlikely to add anything worthwhile to the story.
