I still have my FX500 bought in 1991, along with my FX900 that I got many years later. Both despite being in the same model range are totally different, and both can do sounds the other can not. The FX500 was my main unit for everything back then, including hooking up to my Yamaha MT100 MkII cassette multitrack recorder, to add FX to vocals and any mic'd instrument. Oozing with character and very usable.
It looks like a car stereo. I don't know who it was aimed for (from the distortions etc I believe guitarists?), but I suppose everyone was a bit confused about the looks.
Been considering an spx90, had an spx50d liked the pitch and the goofy reverb stuff and the detune feature. Wondering if an emp100 or fx 500,550 or 900 would be a better option?
The fx series are cool if you want something that’ll cover more effects simultaneously. Some may argue that the individual effects are better on an SPX series and they may be right, but for the vintage 80s sound, the FX series are very convenient. Check out my demo of the FX-900 if you wanna hear a single preset built using 3 or 4 simultaneous effects. The 900 is probably the most amusing unit in terms of sound effects. It really nails the sound of dinosaurs sinking into a tar pit or a megaman arm beam cannon.
@@cliftonwright7081 I watched a couple of your demo's on the yamaha units very well done and good chops too. I think you have me sold on an fx series unit with those descriptions alone but how big of a difference would the quality be on an effect like the sypmphonic between the fx900 and an spx90? 0 being like negligable? 10 being like a big difference? I plan on pairing it with a lexicon mpx500/550 or mpx1 and possibly a digitech studio quad v2.
@@gainmeister4505 oooh, yeah if you’re just using symphonic I think the stand alone unit might be a little more rich. I’ll have to compare and get back to you when I get back home from this last week of tour

My 1st unit back in the early 90s i was dialing like crazy on this stuff during my spare time after school 🤟😱🤩✌️ It's funny to see that you can make a FX500 sounds "kinda better" than an Helix or Axe FX in the hands of an average metalish playa
@@lushkordz6643 I prefer amps but for videos it’s just easier for me to use a Helix or Iridium depending on where I am. I use a torpedo rack unit a lot also.
Fun demo. I need to dig mine out of wherever I put it, or loaned it. Didn't know it had a foot switch. Or more likely, just couldn't afford it back at the time. Listening to you play on the jazz patch and hearing the distortion, I'm guessing that peak light is a real overload light and there is not much headroom. I had mine looked at one time at a Yamaha repair and they replaced some of the input components, but may have just needed to reduce input level. Cheers, D
Thanks for checking out the channel, amigo! Yeah this box has got a lot of vibe! If I were gunna fire it up again, I’d put it in a parallelizer and use it for that shoegaze thing.
Yeah, if you’re sending a track to it for processing then printing it’s outputs to new tracks for mixing. Otherwise it’s not really a preamp, more of an effects unit.
Im 60 years old and I been playing heavy distortion E A G for the last six years. It's kinda like crack for old farts that can't play for $hit, but on your video at 1:18, i discovered that an old dog really can wag a new tail. Thank you, and Cheers! From SLC Utah. BTW, after I departed the Marines in '91, I took my silly ass to Tokyo and taught English for five years. Best food and women I ever had in my entire life. Yataii!
You can plug right into it and go into a clean modeler pedal like an iridium or a UA Dream. But then you’d be processing your guitar signal through ancient converters so it’ll sound like booty. What you REALLY wanna do is use a small parallel mixer like the musicom parallelizer. That’s a good buy because, although it’s overkill for just a single vintage effect unit like this, you’d have a platform to add a few other things and make a crazy 80s schmoo tone system.
Wow. Nice video. I just scored one of these yesterday. They were selling a small suitcase with crap inside, take it or leave it, $20.00. And it also came with a Midibuddy 128, and a Sony Discman. But the funny thing was when i went to the door, he came out and said "So you're here for the suitcase? Let me just get this junk out of it". I blurted out "I want the junk as listed on the add". He just closed the case and said "Here you go"... Awesome. Cheers!
@@3556Heisenberg I used unbalanced cables for the demo, The unit can be used a lot of different ways but it has a hi-Z input in the front so it can act like a stereo pedalboard into two amps or channels or what have you.

The soft focus preset is worth the price of admission alone as made famous by Slowdive on their album Souvlaki. I like these thrift shop finds!
Just got one for $10 because they thought it wasn't working. Just plugged in the correct plug, and it works great. Second best $10 I spent!

Hahaha, it’s actually a “Burny” Flying V copy from 1980-81 made in the factory that now makes the expensive Japanese Gretsch guitars in Nagano Japan.
