Yeah wow, a real winner of a pedal. Congrats Catalinbread for making an absolutely beautiful sounding pedal that also works well with distorted and overdriven tones. The reverb trails are even and gorgeous. Whatever circuitry you're using, you got it right. The Soft Focus is easily one of the very best pedals I've heard in the last two years. You hit the jackpot with having Ryan do this demo. Wonderful inspired playing - The sign of a great pedal! 😎
Many of the Soft Focus ethereal sounds can easily be used as intros to more hard driven tunes. Here is a new approach to sound that creative people should not ignore! Yes I bought one after your video.
I dont think doing the "clean part, then dirty part" thing that's been done since the 60s is very creative. That's kind of a "dont let peas touch the mashed potatoes" kind of approach.
Takes me back to Jerry Garcia doing those 30 minute space jam solos. Great sounding reverb. I'd love to hear a snare drum run through it with some King Tubby style dub too.

As the 80’s and 90’s wore on, they got more sound effects into the chain but maybe check out any version of Space -> The Other One or Dark Star from 89 or something like that

100% accurate title. And your playing really gets into it once you dim the lights, no joke! You should have picked a guitar with a wiggle stick - if youd bent a few of those notes over the loop you'd be nailing it even more. Us 'gazers love to wiggle our sticks. Another thing these kinds of pedals do well is creating ambient tones that you can do a short loop of, and then play over - ethereal sound in the background to really fill a room with.
Yes to the lighting at 12:00. I carried around an Alesis midiverb4 zip tied inside a suitcase just for this kind of reverb and finally replaced it with a Matthews astronomer…but this one has a richer modulation and is more like the old 90s rack unit of mine. Love this with the fuzz. Great demo.
Back in the day I was at church in school and the band played an instrumental of INXS never year up apart during the communion part. This pedal playing that track would sound crazy.
One of my favorite memories was busting out singing that song in small car. It came on an 80s station in 1998. A guy from work who was into alternative music laughed and laughed. I wore all black with thick boots. He couldn't believe I would know that songs so well.
This pedal sounds incredible. The only thing this video left me wondering is how it would sound with a sustainiac. Loved the baritone at the end. It really tied the video together.

The price points are very similar, about a 20$ difference. (The Slö is on sale currently on Sweetwater, so it’s a little cheaper at the moment) Can’t go wrong with either or, it seems!
Last year I went from 1 Catalinbread pedal to 4. I bought some mod pedals and the Anticthon fuzz. The Many Worlds Phaser and the Callisto Chorus are both amazing.
Keeley already had soft focus on his pedals. But this pedal...Maybe I need this soft focus 2 too. Genius idea for a complete pedal., It sounds Slowdive for sure. Good presentation mr Hum.
@@SS-gx7tg the soft focus mode is on the Keeley Realiser reverb and on the Keeley Loomer. Also very nice, but just one control for the modulation (manipulating the chain of 2 delays with five chorusses). A comparison video would be great, it will come I suppose.

Gonna pick this up for sure. It's such an over the top reverb and I love that. It really reminds me of a Zoom 507 with a shimmer and that's just my sauce.

Finally an aesthetic from CB that isn't completely devoid of taste. This isn't exactly classic CB design visually but I much appreciate the simple appearance compared to the Dream skewer and all that bull.
The CB Talisman pedal is anything but devoid of taste. It has a specific purpose, but that purpose is incredible. That being said, I’m generally not a fan of excessively painted pedals. The Talisman is visually subdued, thankfully.

Years ago I saw a band, can't remember who -- maybe Yo La Tengo -- , in which the guitarist was using a paintbrush and fast-strumming to get a wash of sound with no audible attack. The brush looked to be about 1 1/2" wide. Later on Jonsi from Sigur Ros got a similar sound by using a bow. If you're feeling experimental the brush thing might sound interesting with this pedal.
Want want want. I've not been a big pedal guy, but am sort of heading that way anyway and really, really into shoegaze and dream pop. That whole sound seems very 'Catch the Breeze' to me. Something for the old xmas list. It ain't hoarding if you can make music with it, right? Great review. Great sound. Love that Guild.

I have a Keeley Loomer and a Realizer on my board and the realizer is dedicated to the soft focus patch. This pedal doesn’t have the same thing going on in regards to the the soft focus patch of those pedals, but it’s different enough to warrant me wanting to buy it.
I use to have a fx500. Built like a flimsy, cheap, piece of crap... but sounded just like this pedal. This is probably a great alternative to that cool slowdive vibe. The qaudraverb by alesis can come close as well.
Important question Ryan; have you watched twin peaks or anything by David Lynch? his main composer (Angelo Badalamenti) has done some good soundtrack work you'd like (the opening for twin peaks is basically surf + shoegaze; Angelo being the main inspiration for lots of shoegaze)
Really nice sounds, right down my alley. Sadly it comes with a nice price tag as well. 250€ auts. If compared to EH oceans 12 for example. But 9-18v if I saw correctly. That´s awesome..maybe even more head room on 18v?

@@johnnydark4802 i got mine for 50€. You can always have it on or under a board, and get like a true bypass looper to switch it on or off. This is more convenient though. Though you will have the added doubt: is this exaaactly like the original? :D

Got a FX550 to have the symphonic effect and found it was way better unit that the FX500 I had in the early 90's. Great video!

Really nice sounds, right down my alley. Sadly it comes with a nice price tag as well. 250€ auts.
If compared to EH oceans 12 for example. But 9-18v if I saw correctly. That´s awesome..maybe even more head room on 18v?
Keeley Loomer is another option.
It's a bit hard to swallow if you can get FX500s for around 70-100 Euro.

@@johnnydark4802 i got mine for 50€. You can always have it on or under a board, and get like a true bypass looper to switch it on or off. This is more convenient though. Though you will have the added doubt: is this exaaactly like the original? :D
