i know a place near you that i plan on going to again that i would recommend you at least check out - it's Mt Baldy in the Colville Ntl forest. Just an old fire tower on top of a mountain. Really fun! Wouldn't camp near it though considering there's a bear den nearby. Not super crazy in terms of trail difficulty, i took a stock 2nd gen explorer up there. but it's cool!

I still haven't found a pop out clam shell tent better than the FSR Aspen Lite series. It's a few bucks more than the Topoak. But it's better in just about every way. Extremely lightweight, that doesn't rob your payload like the Topoak and many others do. High quality construction. Hands down, the very best mattress of ANY RTT. All the features you can ask for. Diesel heater/AC/electric ports, insulated, the list goes on.

    • @macairtuber
      @macairtuber 2 месяца назад +1

Aspen lite is a great tent IF you don't need to mount an awning to the side of the tent, you are OK not getting any crossbars or ability to carry anything significant on the tent and you are ok spending over $1000 more. And the mattress is the same 'tech' that people like Exped and amazon knock-offs have been doing for 10+ years. It also just adds to the setup / takedown time having to inflate / deflate the mattress - yeah I know you can buy rechargeable inflators for cheap but still more to deal with. The battle of weight, height, strength (accessory mounting options) and comfort is real - Pick your preference. I personally think the Intrepid Geo 2.5 is the best tent on the market - but too much overland tax on it. Waiting for a knockoff of that one at TopOak prices. 2nd fav is the regular FSR Aspen V2 XL.

After getting a hard shell tent myself, I have had half dozen people wanting to see it in action in the first month of owning it. Mine being a bit bigger than most “Skycamp” but for those who don’t have kids or smaller families this would be perfect! and the price is a great value! I checked their website site out to pass on info on the Topoak tent. A tent with all of its features plus capable add ons for $1499 and $499 for shipping to Canada still beats the rest in this category. I tried your discount code to get a final price of $1848 US. Topoak’s next decision is to find a Canadian distributor? Thanks for the info! I like the cameo on the back of your rig.

Maybe the side awnings roll up and tie back when you don't want them? That's the only thing I don't like, I get the rain benefit but I mostly camp in decent weather and don't want to have to put those up every time just to see out and have the windows open. Otherwise a great looking tent, I hope this puts all the 4k tents in check. The U bar support is far superior to roofnest, glad to see that.

Just lacks a heater hose vent, for super cold 4-season camping. I would rather use a diesel heater outside and run a hose attachment to tent vent, than a Little Buddy propane heater in the tent interior. For this reason, I'm leaning toward a 2024 RoofTop Falcon series.

Excellent review of this RTT and playing Devil’s advocate. I was teetering between different mid-ranged tents and I think you have me finally sold on this one. All those other expensive RTTs out there can flash their brand and price tag on vehicles but it’s all about usability, quality finish, practicality combined with the bottom line $$$. I think this has it all for those who are ok not branding a status symbol. I think people should shop wisely according to their needs and how often they use their tents. Is it two seasons a year with a few weekends each or much more than that. Thanks for your comparison as well to the 1.0 and all the upgrades included to show how the 2.0 is better.

Dude a high quality tent you set up on the ground can easily run $500. How do you expect to attach that to your roof and not add any cost? Yes, $20k is absurd for some of these, but your price is ridiculously low and defies any actual accounting of the costs.

Great video - really appreciate the detailed review. On the Galaxy 2.0, the side canopy is a great idea, but you end up losing that larger side door/window and therefore ambient lighting. When you tested both, did the 1.0 have noticeably more ambient natural lighting than the 2.0? Living in the SE during humid summers, any additional open screening for enhanced air movement is appreciated. If natural light and airflow are key, would you recommend the 1.0 over the 2.0 model? Or do the upgrades, in your opinion, outweigh any reduced ambient lighting and airflow? Wonder if TopOak plans to incorporate all the structural and hardware upgrades on the 1.0 that you discussed for the 2.0 on this video. Thanks again.

I absolutely love the idea of the skylight; I’d be able to take my bottle girl stargazing in the comfort of the tent! My question about it, however, would be what kind of maintenance does that require? It seems like it’s just plastic, so I wonder if you need to do something to keep it from yellowing or cracking over time.

This is certainly a great looking tent and a definite improvement over "Gen1" but what are the advantages of having a RTT over a ground tent? I'm just not convinced. Having an extra 175 lbs. (or whatever) bolted to the roof while transversing an off-camber trail doesn't leave me with a good feeling. Taking a leak in the middle of the night becomes more involved. Critters can climb ladders, so security isn't enhanced. And, if you spend more than one night at a campsite, you just can't take off and explore. I guess there is an application where a RTT is superior, I just can't figure that out yet. LMK. I do appreciate the review. I think it was thorough. Maybe there's a video you can do where you compare going on a trip or two where you use each type of tent. Thanks.

In my somewhat limited experience with both rtt and ground camping, the main advantages of the rtt for me are cleanliness and ease of use. Here in Scandinavia it rains a lot, and quite often muddy. Packing a tent with a muddy base not a huge problem, but I really dislike it. Apart from wiping down your ladder, mud isn't really a thing you deal with rtt camping. Setting up an rtt, even a softshell kukenam like I have, is easier and quicker than most ground tents. Add to this the fact that you can leave pillows, sleeping bags, blankets etc in the rtt when packed up, the rtt is just a more hassle-free experience. This as you mention comes at the drawback of poorly placed weight. Softshells are generally lighter, mine weighs 60 kg or 130 lbs, and I don't really feel the weight unless taking a tight turn at high speed, and the rollover point is still far beyond what I have the balls to do haha. Another drawback is the price, you could get a whole, great ground camp setup for the price of just an rtt. Rtt's are definitely not for everyone, but even with the drawbacks I still prefer rtt camping.

people usuall just zip the diesel heater tub into a door... the awnings would help in this case if it was raining... with a lot of diesel heaters you need to get an extension hose to make that work.

@@OutdoorAuto Thank you! the site says it's 79" interior, do you find that that's accurate? At 6'4", hat only gives you 3 inches, do you seep lengthwise on your back? Also, have you had success folding 2 pillows and 2 sleeping bags inside? The rest can go in the car but that would be really nice.

No one buys a $4,000.00 rooftop tent that can't throw cash away without caring. The rest of us mortals think $1,600.00 is still insane. Rooftop tents suck if you have a dog or like gas mileage. It might not look as cool, but sleeping in the rig or throwing down a "Gazelle" ground tent is way better in my opinion. That being said, great video for all the rich dudes out there.

Where I live in Idaho I can’t drive longer then 5 min without seeing a Roof Top Tent… I am pretty sure those aren’t all rich people… my guess is Credit cards or long hours… that’s kinda the point of this video… save some money and go camping more.

    • @ianweal3081

I'm nothing like rich but I do like simplicity in camping, hence we purchased a South African RTT, the Bundutec Bundutop RTT.
In Australian dollars, that's $5400.00 we paid.
Guessing in American dollars, we spent $4000.00 plus, so yes people do pay $4K plus on RTT.
Bundutop, it's simplicity at its best, 4 overcentre catches, push a button & tents erects in 18 seconds including tensioning 360° awning in process.
All bedding contained within aluminium shell, including pillows.
You get what you pay for, I'll stick to the Bundutop unit.
For that additional comfort, I installed a diesel heater, it's never cold in our Bundutop but we don't deliberately camp in the cold, but a cold front can occur anytime, we're ready for it.

Put on a vinyl wrap on the hood then cover it in stickers. Cheap, easy enough to do yourself on large relatively flat panel and then your paint will remain intact underneath if you ever change your mind or sell it.
