Simplisafe Review, a DIY Home Security System w/ iPhone App Review

  • This is my SimpliSafe Home Security System. This Simplisafe Review contains a review on the actual system, as well as the iPhone Application. Shortly after doing my Simplisafe review they added the Pin # to the iPhone app to help make it secure -- YAY!
    I installed everything myself (basically its just peeling and sticking sensors). There are no wires that need to be ran for this system as it is completely wireless.
    All Sensors run on CR123 Lithium batteries which typically will last 5 years in this scenario.

    I spent several years working crime scenes in both Patrol and Detective division. The majority of home burglary incidents involved doors being kicked in. I would also add that if you had items stolen, criminals figure you will replace them with insurance, and you may get another visit a few months later.

    I had my first real Simplisafe alarm earlier today. The log file shows an entry sensor was triggered at 2:44PM while I was at work. At 2:45PM, I received a call from the Simplisafe dispatcher notifying me of the alarm. I live in a rental house and at 2:46PM I received a call from my property manager letting me know that he had triggered my alarm while doing his annual property inspection. Evidently, I didn't get the inspection notice. I immediately called Simplisafe and they cancelled the police response. All was well at home and I was completely satisfied with Simplisafe's response.

    @ anarchyx914 you can turn the motion sensor upside down, this will make the sensor pick up heat signatures from about 4 feet and up to allow for large dogs. Got this from simplisafe yesterday.

    Thanks for the Review. I got one of these, and really love it. It's simple, has a cellular connection (not land line or Cable) and the monitoring is optional. Any one looking for a low cost, but High quality home security system needs to look into this. Great review/demo of a great product. Well Done.

    Nice review! Rather than install sensors on all windows, we simply put sensors inside stereo cabinet, armoire, dresser drawer, etc. so if someone does break in they'll trigger one as they rifle thru our stuff. We have the doors protected, but a burglar could break the glass rather than lift the window, so the ambush sensors come in handy. I know they have glass break sensors, but those & motion detectors are the most likely to trip a false alarm. I also plan to plug our Base station into a UPS power supply for additional backup battery support. Thanks for the review!

    • @AntneyOslund
      @AntneyOslund 9 лет назад +1

      jimonqa The Uninterruptible Power Supply idea is a great one! When I first purchased my system, I put in $20 worth of a better quality, higher output rechargeable batteries to increase the backup battery time. Eventually I did purchase a UPS dedicated to powering only the SimpliSafe base station.

    • @snakepudding
      @snakepudding 8 лет назад +1

      Antney Oslund The UPS is not designed to run long enough to do much good. I purchased a $150 UPS assuming it would supply power for a long time (large Pb acid battery) but my assumption was proven wrong by looking further at the UPS data. All of this was validated by making phone calls to the two main manufacturers of UPS in the USA. Buy eneloop 12 ea matched 2450mAh batteries, install them with sets of four in parallel using two external battery holders with the wires pinched-connected inside the SS case and you can get >7X run time with this setup using the SS charger. This will also trigger the SS to post a message if the house power goes off. My UPS will only run

    thanks for the review very much. been debating on this one for some time. glad to know it will work on both landline and cell and no extra cost for that. Love the wireless nature of the system and the fact it's programmable. love the ability to arm/disarm and check on status from the iphone, going to add the smoke detector once they get it back in stock later in June.

    Flood sensor(s) would be placed on the floor of say a basement near your sump pump. In the event of a storm where your power goes out (assuming you do not have back-up power), the floor sensor would detect water accumulating on the floor. This will let you know to haul butt home and get power to that sump pump. You find these types of sensors in mechanical rooms of buildings and is great if you have a basement. Great Review!!!

      Everyone should share this information on your FB. Alarm companies are not experts in your security! If they try to convince you that monitoring a camera on your phone is a good thing. Let me ask you this. What good is it when your across town and you see two burglars wearing a two dollar disguise in your home? You can't recognize them and all you've done is surrender your rights to privacy when any two bit hacker can look in your home!! What good is it for your alarm system to call a monitoring station, in Kansas? All they can do is call police for you, and by the time they go through the five man relay team and an officer actually shows up at your home or business. Criminals have done their dirty deed and are long gone with your property. How many of you have every got your property back? Lets just say the odds of winning the lottery are better. When you want better than the so called best. YOU NEED ME! If you don't care, then you will when you become the next victim. How do I know? With more than 30 years in the industry. That's then only time you care and call. AFTER YOU BECOME THE NEXT VICTIM! Times are tough but, they are only getting ready to get tougher!

    The "home temp" is for the Freeze Sensor which tells you when your indoor temp is cold enough to freeze your pipes..not an automatic thermostat control.
    They do now have Smoke Detector, Carbon Monoxide Detector. The Water Sensor is very useful to know if you have a water/flood problem I.e washing machine hoses are known to burst, toilets have been known to run over, bathtubs etc.

    1st Great video... Its nice to see a walk through from a regular citizen that has this, vs one of their commercials...
    I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a Simplisafe Alarm System, If you get the basic package of $15.99 month package, are you still able to log into the web page and label all the sensors and such to manage it???
    It looks like Text messages about sensors and alerts, as well as remote arm/disarm from Smart phone are the only features you do not get with the basic package correct????

    BTW, thanks for the video! I had a hard time deciding between all the different alarms available. Your video cemented my decision to buy SimpliSafe. Hopefully it'll arrive soon. It's been rough for me since two men tried to break into my home late at night. It's odd that they rang the doorbell first. No one nice comes that late and with flashlights. It took the police 15 minutes to come, very unsettling! I put a deadbolt in my bathroom. No windows and safest place to hide.

    How does the main security panel (at your front door) receive power? Does it run on battery or is it hard wired to a power line in your home? That would be the only major thing I think you left out of your review - otherwise really well done. You mentioned it was hung with 3M tape so i'm guessing it's wireless and uses battery? If so how long does that battery last and is it rechargeable?

    I know you can buy an extra keypad. If you were to mount a keypad outside near the garage door, will it last in the outside elements? We have an auto garage door opener and come in to the house that way occasionally. The garage is attached to the house.

    • @kayakdan48
      @kayakdan48 6 лет назад

      Good question that I did already consider. Elements are really variable in the US...in MN I face freezing (down to -20 or more) temps/rain/snow etc. Looking at my new keypad...it does NOT appear to be water proof or even resistant. I also doubt if the AA batteries would survive very long even in mildly cold weather. Otherwise keep the batteries fresh and install in a protected area...go for it! As long as the base picks it up.

    • @johnl563
      @johnl563 6 лет назад

      Dan O'Connell thanks. I am in the mid Atlantic area. Batteries definitely would be affected by colder weather. There may be some sort of waterproof cover you could buy somewhere. Maybe eventually SS will make a weather proof keypad for garage door applications.

    Might as well get an Oplink System that has both alarms and cameras for around the same monthly price as Simplisafe or even less since they give you the choice to go with a free version or a premier version($20/mth) if you'd like to add additional users to access your system.. and you can control everything that's connected to your system through your smart phone. All I can say is that I'm happy with my purchase.

    They are going to make glass break sensors soon. But even if they break the window they will unlatch the locks and lift the window, unless they want to get cut and try to squeeze through the frame.

    I thought it didn't need a phone cable for the base system. What happens if you don't have landline service?

    • @somwrtlftur2367
      @somwrtlftur2367 8 лет назад +1

      Landline phone cable is for backup only or in case you don't have a cell signal. But if you have cell service in your home you do NOT need a phone cable.

      I loved this information from SecurityAllStar.com
      Do you know THESE FACTS?
      * HAS NO TAMPERS ON DOOR SENSORS, WINDOW SENSORS OR MOTIONS THAT WE CAN FIND
      * HAS NO REDUNDANT MONITORING FOR UL LISTING THAT WE CAN FIND
      * DOES NOT HAVE CRASH AND SMASH TO THWART CIRCUMVENTION BY THIEVES - POSITIVELY
      * IS NOT NRTL OR CERTIFIED TESTED WHICH EVEN CHEAP PRODUCTS DO THESE DAYS
      * SINGLE MODE NOTIFICATION TO MONITORING (MOST NOW HAVE AT LEAST 2 AND OURS HAS 3 - ETHERNET, WIFI AND CELLULAR
      ADDITIONALLY
      1. STANDARD WITH SS DOES NOT COME WITH APPS
      2. STANDARD WITH SS HAS NO AUTOMATION
      3. STANDARD WITH SS IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OUR OPTIONS
      4. OUR CAMERAS ARE AT A BARE MINIMUM TWICE THE RESOLUTION AND WORK WITH THE APP AND:
      IP MEXAPIXEL CAMERAS DO NOT COST EXTRA PER MONTH WITH US

    uhm, yea so all those window things, do you have to keep them with batteries? Since it's not wired? I have a ton of windows so if that's the case, no thank you!

      I know your joking but I might as well answer for the heck of it Lol, if you cut the phone line the system will still call out using the cellular network and if you turn off the building's main power switch the system would still have electricity because of the battery back up XD

    I believe it's easier to break into the your house and disarm the alarm than the iPhone which is protected by passcode, remote killswitch and remote wipe through iCloud. I wouldn't worry about being compromised my alarm app because I lose my iPhone.

    Amazing the things that companies do not do until we shame them... all I would want would be for the address to be removed. I would not want to type in a PW every time I did something. Versatility is the operative word in software.

    About the window sensors: In many of the other videos I have watched, for double-hung windows (most common type of window in US homes and the type of window I have) I see the sensors being installed at the top portion of the upper sash of the window, or at the bottom portion of the lower sash of the window. But, if you install a sensor at the top area of the upper sash, a home invader could lift the lower sash without separating the sensor parts (which are on the top sash), and if you install it at the lower area of the lower sash of the window, a home invader could lower the upper sash without separating the sensor parts, which are on the lower sash. (I hope I have described the problem I see clearly.) Please clarify how one sensor per window will trigger any entry attempt, in light of what I have described. Thank you. (And please don't say buy two sensors per window. If that is the case, the many videos that I watched on this system, including the one from the company, should have mentioned this major flaw and warned that your common double-hung window requires two sensors per window.)

    • @johnbozzola4767
      @johnbozzola4767 9 лет назад

      22doulos22 How about if you install the larger half of the sensor on the bottom half of the window and the smaller half of the sensor on the top half of the window. This would be installed at the halfway point of the window where you would normally find the window locks. Yes, someone would see the sensors when looking through the window, but it might deter them from trying to enter.

    • @22doulos22
      @22doulos22 9 лет назад

      John Bozzola Thanks for the suggestion. But, the top sash is so skinny that I could not open the window without removing the sensor, even if I put the smaller half on it. That is, the sashes would not bypass each other.

    • @johnbozzola4767
      @johnbozzola4767 9 лет назад

      I understand. In my own windows the two halves fit perfectly, perhaps because my windows are made of wood they are thicker.

    • @22doulos22
      @22doulos22 9 лет назад

      John Bozzola Yes, that's it. Mine are vinyl replacement and the frames are considerable thinner that the originals. Of well. Motion sensors have taken over the job. Everything is working well.

    You should think about using the motion sensors upstairs. If someone just breaks your glass windows without opening the frame they can walk right through without setting off the sensor. You REALLY need motion sensors!

    I had the same system and returned it because you can turn on a cell phone jammer, break into the house and the unit cannot call out, It's useless without a landline connected. The jammer used which can be purchased online took out wireless internet connection and cellular service at my neighbors house also. It's a decent system besides that.

      +Tim McSwain And who has a landline now? We are in our 50's and do not have a landline and never will again. So, you get something that will do a reasonable job under the circumstances for a good price. Simplisafe checks all of those boxes. If you want to pay ATT $40+ a month for a landline to get your alarm system monitored, then proceed. Most common home burglars, and by most I mean 99% of them, will not have a cell phone jammer.
