Downtown Streets Team: Kathy's Story

There are many reasons for homelessness, not all of which are caused by a life altering event or series of unexpected events.
In this episode of “This is My Story” Kathy tells her story of being homeless and having a mental illness and how ultimately Downtown Streets Team helped her with a job that gave her back her dignity.
Downtown Streets Team (DST)is a program who’s volunteer Team Members are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless.
DST provides homeless and low-income men and women with the resources they need to rebuild their lives. First, they volunteer on one of the teams and begin working collaboratively on beautification projects. Team Members are held accountable and trusted to complete tasks, show up on time, and work well with others. Those who show dedication and leadership skills have the ability to rise up to become Team Leads, then Managers, and supervise others with little or no supervision from staff.
The program has the inherent public benefit of a cleaner community as the Team Members engage in beautifications projects such as street cleaning and creek restoration.
The majority of new Team Members hear about DST services through peer-to-peer outreach from existing Team Members or graduates.
