The first defenders of Pottsville were among the first five units to respond to Abraham Lincoln's call for troops to defend the capital after Fort Sumter. All of them came from the Berks/Schuylkill/SE PA area. The actual first were the Ringgold Light Artillery from Reading. The others were the National Light Infantry of Pottsville, the Washington Artillerists of Pottsville, the Logan Guards of Lewiston, and the Allen Infantry of Allentown. Nicholas Biddle was a Washington Artillerist, who was en route to D.C., when they made a stop in Baltimore. As a black man, the southern sympathisers gathered there targeted him, and he was hit in the head by a rock, causing a very serious head wound.
My great grandma was born in 1892 and my grandma 1915 so they both were older than that. I am interested in learning more. My grandma moved to Ohio for steel mills. Our poor small towns are ghost towns and were used to build this country. I love small towns.

Those depressions in the cemetery are usually from burials where there was no vault used. Over time the casket rots away and the ground sinks. Thanks for a fascinating historical tour!
The Garfield was featured in a 1993 Rick Sebak documentary about PA diners. The owners at the time mentioned the JFK speech and had a photograph of the event.
For those interested in the Molly McGuires, there is a bronze statue (of a man on the gallows,) surrounded by informational plaques containing a good concise history of the events, located in nearby Mahanoy City.

My mom had her accident on that road in 2016 In my yellow tracker. A man had a heart attack and crashed into her and she hit couple cars. Was cut out and flown to Lehigh valley hospital...she is alive and doing well. She was in a 40 day coma.

The old cemetery on Laurel Blvd also has the gravestone of Nicholas Biddle, the first to shed blood in the Civil War. You needed to go to the very end of Ninth Street last gravestone in the cemetery.

Another stop in Pottsville us the John O'Hara statue on A Centre St. Some of his books were made into movies staring Liz Taylor. The Schuylkill County Historical Society does Walking Tours in October at several of areas you covered in your videos. The Wheel in Pottsville is a good place to eat. If you are in area after 3pm, the "Wooden Keg", an Irish Pub that has been around since the 1850s is good and has interesting history. The basement has an old tunnel that ran under the ground to the brewery across street. Rumors of Molly Maguire connections. Hope you visit again soon.

Enjoyed the trip Cliff/John. As a retired local PA 18 wheeler I went through this area often on way to Pittston PA. from Reading. Of course I kept that big rig on Rt.61. I drove for Maier's Bakery now owned by Bimbo.
We stayed in Pottsville a few years ago when we came up from NC to bury my brother in Mt. Carmel. That nail has got to be the most intimidating one I have ever seen. That Spanish-American War memorial was the first one of those I have seen as well. It is a nice little town, we enjoyed our stay.
My parents were raised on two sides of Pottsville,one in Minersville and one in St. Clair. I have been to Pottsville many times and have 7:21 never been to the places on this video. Great job. video.
I live in Pottsville. Grew up across the river in Palo Alto, moved to Pottsville in 1966. It was an interesting video. Come back, go to Yuengling Brewery, climb the hill to Nativity High School, go west to see Pottsville Area High School, the Middle School with Martz Hall, the elementary school too. Keep exploring interesting places.
Thanks for highlighting my hometown. Of course I have family buried in Charles Baber Cemetery. I lived 1 block from the Prison. I have been inside the prison, not as an inmate though. At Christmas our youth group would sing Carols there. I do recall there were several inmates that were allowed to work outside the prison, they were called "Trustys". My great grandfather Hiram Smith Davies was Chief of Police for 35 years. The Bethel AME Church was on my route from home to Jr and Sr High School. I recall that Nicholas Biddle was buried in that cemetery. I did know the history that he was the first bloodshed in the civil war. Across the street from that church was the Marsden's Potato Chip factory. We often followed our noses and stopped there for samples.

This is our town! You missed a huge portion of the historic and beautiful- the architecture here is unrivaled- a historic preservation group came through years ago and was astounded by all the variety that still exists! Come do another!
You guys should come down to my neck of the woods here in Boyertown and check out the Rhoads Opera House Fire (google it). A federal law came out of my town and there is a huge cemetery where the victims of the fire are buried. The opera house building is still standing today after being rebuilt after the fire, now called the Engle building. - Randy

Pottsville is an old town, such narrow streets and historic buildings. Glad to see all the statues and old buildings still standing, don't let BLM people find these places, they would come and try to destroy all of that. Philly, Pottsville, etc. Every small town got antique buildings and land marks. Not to mention Pennhurst of course... that's a must see for all explorers.

Those Civil War monuments I think are in Garfield Square. My pediatrician was located there on Market Street. I think President Kennedy had a speech there back in the day.
Yes, I like your videos. I have a watched a few, I watch you and another guy called the Coal Cracker and have learned a lot about east PA. I have a BA History degree and am from Ohio, I know a lot of west PA, Pittsburgh, etc, but almost nothing about east PA. I have never been anywhere in east PA, but I actually feel like I am there when I watch your vids and the Coal Cracker, and I never knew how beautiful east PA is, when I watch these vids I wish I were back home. I just realized something about the word Pottsville was bugging me, I just realized it reminds me of Pottsylvania from Rocky & Bullwinkle
That was a super find, the cemetery! We drove thru Pottsville when we were there this summer and joked about the dude on the very tall column😂, and here he shows up in your video! Should you come back to Pottsville, I strongly suggest that you stop at the Historical Society. Actually, you drove past the back of it twice! FYI: I can not believe that you did not take the Yuengling Brewery Tour on Mahantongo Street. If you had continued up that street you would have seen where many of the stories of the American writer John O'Hara were set. You missed his statue. (Also, beautiful large old homes built on coal.) If youfollow the Main street North, you would have come to a small cemetary on the left which is the final resting place of several REVOLUTIONARY WAR soldiers. Pottsville was also a stop on the underground railroad.
I live in Pottsville, missed some nice stuff, but anyhow. Go to Pine Grove you'll find some older tombstones. They're along Tulphehacan Street (sorry spelling) down in the flood zone near the old NAPA garage. Ask the locals, they should know.

That prison has black mold in it n the guards treat the prisoners like shit unless they like or know u plus they lose ur property n tell u that they gave it to ur family or we don't know where it is we don't have it the also keep ur pain meds for themselves it has happened to tons of people n the nurses there give people the wrong meds it's a horrible place it needs to be torn down!!!!!
I watch a documentary film back in the 70s on PBS on Pa Dinner, the dinner on the corner at the monuments was featured because JFK gave a speech there and they used the dinner to access the stage.
My Babcia lived in Palo Alto. Her house is still there owned by her first grandson. drove past that monument on 209 going to Minersville to see relatives once a month as a kid in the early 60's.
That's good that you ran into a friendly local who directed you to that cemetery. Not all strangers are creepy, that must be a Northeast thing. I have not seen many war graves or monuments for the Spanish American War in PA or anywhere for that matter. It seems to be like a forgotten war. If that was a church with a cemetery that must have been a Black church with a cemetery for Black soldiers. The one corner area looks like it was cleared and not taken care of for a while.

I believe he headed the First Bank of the US in Philly, and his namesake lives in Philly today and modestly calls himself Nick.
Pottsville is home of the Pottsville Maroons, an NFL team in the 1920s.

When you were lost in Pottsville if you turn left on Spring Garden st. Thats where I grew up. Poor neighborhood but a good one.

They didn't require the concrete crypt back then I don't believe, that's why bodies of all colors would be found after floods. 🙂

That U.S. "Colored" troops tombstone is interesting, as I don't think everyone knew that African Americans were also soldiers during the Civil War,😊

Should you come back to Pottsville, I strongly suggest that you stop at the Historical Society. Actually, you drove past the back of it twice! FYI: I can not believe that you did not take the Yuengling Brewery Tour on Mahantongo Street. If you had continued up that street you would have seen where many of the stories of the American writer John O'Hara were set. You missed his statue. (Also, beautiful large old homes built on coal.) If youfollow the Main street North, you would have come to a small cemetary on the left which is the final resting place of several REVOLUTIONARY WAR soldiers. Pottsville was also a stop on the underground railroad.

I live in Pottsville, missed some nice stuff, but anyhow. Go to Pine Grove you'll find some older tombstones. They're along Tulphehacan Street (sorry spelling) down in the flood zone near the old NAPA garage. Ask the locals, they should know.

That prison has black mold in it n the guards treat the prisoners like shit unless they like or know u plus they lose ur property n tell u that they gave it to ur family or we don't know where it is we don't have it the also keep ur pain meds for themselves it has happened to tons of people n the nurses there give people the wrong meds it's a horrible place it needs to be torn down!!!!!

I watch a documentary film back in the 70s on PBS on Pa Dinner, the dinner on the corner at the monuments was featured because JFK gave a speech there and they used the dinner to access the stage.

My Babcia lived in Palo Alto. Her house is still there owned by her first grandson. drove past that monument on 209 going to Minersville to see relatives once a month as a kid in the early 60's.

That's good that you ran into a friendly local who directed you to that cemetery. Not all strangers are creepy, that must be a Northeast thing. I have not seen many war graves or monuments for the Spanish American War in PA or anywhere for that matter. It seems to be like a forgotten war. If that was a church with a cemetery that must have been a Black church with a cemetery for Black soldiers. The one corner area looks like it was cleared and not taken care of for a while.
