    Chameleons are easily one of my favorite types of lizards, I've been fascinated with them as long as I can remember - however after learning more about them I realized they were not the right pet for me, and that I wouldn't be able to provide a chameleon with the best home. So now I'm content to enjoy them through you 😂

    I like that you are honest and upfront about the facts. You are trying to look out for the welfare of the animals. So many people don't worry about the health and well-being of these little creatures. They just want to own something exotic and amazing but sometimes aren't worried about the consequences of poor care or realizing the hardwork that is required or even the longevity of the critters lives. I applaud you. It really is a lifetime dedication. How long do each species of the chameleons you mentioned live??? Bravo. First time subscriber and first time viewing your videos. Will definitely be looking forward to more from you. 😉🦎

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  3 года назад +7

      Thank you very much! Chameleons life spans really depend on the species. And as we continue to keep them, we’re finding that they’re living longer! As a general rule, the larger the species, the longer they tend to live. Parsons chameleons for example have been found to live up to 20 years old. Where as smaller species such as carpet chameleons typically only live 2-3 years.
      As for veileds, panthers and Jackson’s, with proper care they typically live from 4-8 years old, but some experienced keepers and now finding them to live closer to 10! Females also typically tend to have slightly shorter lifespans likely due to how much energy egg laying takes. But again, it all depends on care! Proper care and females shouldn’t have many issues with eggs and therefor may live longer

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  3 года назад +5

      Now these are also captive life spans. Wild chameleons don’t normally live as long since they are often preyed upon and overall experience more stress in the wild and don’t have access to vet care.

    • @amandaleeborchert3745
      @amandaleeborchert3745 3 года назад +3

      You definitely are knowledgeable. Just like with so many birds, people don't realize that it is a lifetime commitment. That's why people like you are so important to get the proper information out there for these little creatures that can not speak for themselves. I applaud you!!! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

      Big-time agree with us. It's huge in fish keeping as well. Because some grow massive and need much bigger tanks than people realize or have special diets or care requirements. And you don't always know that just by shopping at the pet store. So you'll have fish that either die, or have horrible conditions, or people that get upset because they have to buy a lot more equipment spend more time or money, etc.
      I think videos like this are super helpful because somebody might be interested in multiple animals but find that one hits the sweet spot with regard to care and expense and housing, and they can still like the other ones but they can choose the pet that fits their lifestyle.

    The close-up shots of your chameleons are amazing!!! And yea, just because my cat loves to eat tortilla chips, doesn't mean that she's getting anything from it. Chameleons are still wild animals, and all wild animals will try to eat anything remotely edible if hungry enough bc they still have that instinct of not knowing where their next meal will come from.

  • @lurklingX
    @lurklingX 2 дня назад

    Thanks that was really informative. My only experience with them is a friend of mine had a few tiny ones, just sitting out on a fake plant and she said they got stress one day, fell off the plant dead. After watching your video and a few others, I'm thinking that it was more about not having the misting and other requirements and so their lifespan became drastically shorter Due to not having what they needed.
    I think they're probably my favorite reptile, and I only recently came to know there are so many different types. I just never thought I would be able to own one so I never looked super deeply into it.
    I think when I get some money though, and can build a proper home with the right lighting, I'll definitely look into it. Terrarium building and stuff is very interesting to me and it would be nice to have one also be a habitat but there's a lot of animals I just wouldn't really care to have. I'm not into beetles or ants or just any lizard. And snakes are cool but problematic with the feeding. I tried that but it was just too difficult for me. I didn't know about the frozen food initially so I kind of traumatized myself with the baby pinky mice. Especially when my cornsnake slinky refused to eat the one I got for him because I was afraid the lizards just pests weren't nutritious enough for him. He was the best little guy ever. That same friend, her cousin found a pregnant corn snake and when the eggs hatched and they had started eating, he gave them away to a lot of people and I got one. I wasn't planning on it, but that was my introduction into reptiles. He was also an escape artist, even though it was a proper lid. The first time he got out I found him. Almost lost him but managed. The second time never found him again. It was really sad. :( my next and only other snake was a gorgeous black-and-white banded king snake. But he was mean as shit. And so I got to a point where I didn't even want to try to hold him. It just felt like stress. And he tried to swallow one of my fingers one time and it was a panic trying to extract that without hurting him. It was only after the fact that I read king snakes tend to be more aggressive like that. And here I was used to my super chill cornsnake. :/

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  3 года назад

      This is somewhat normal. I find babies will be a bit more explorative than adults usually. A chameleon who’s happy in its enclosure usually won’t move around too much. As long as she’s still eating and seemingly otherwise healthy, I wouldn’t be worried but if she appears lethargic or ill I would take her to a vet. She’s also at the age now where she can start producing eggs, so that could be a factor.

      One of my personal favourite plants for a chameleon enclosure are schefflera! These are usually pretty easy to find

    Wait I am deathly afraid of caterpillars and that meal worm made me squeamish. I have done tons of researching and. Think I can take care of a chameleon. But do I need to feed them LIVE meal worms or can I give them crickets

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  3 года назад +1

      They absolutely NEED live insects. Ideally not mealworms though. those aren’t great for chameleons. Live crickets, roaches, super worms, etc. Dried insects have no nutrients and will make your chameleon malnourished so stick to live, but you don’t need to feed mealworms. Crickets and roaches will do

    Hi, im just asking if you ever had salmonella or is it really common to get salmonella from a chameleon

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  3 года назад +2

      No, it is very, very unlikely to get salmonella from reptiles. I always just be sure to wash my hands after handling my animals.

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  3 года назад

      Typically you’ll want a pot that is at least 8-10” deep. Then fill it up with organic top soil, or a soil sand mix!

    When people handle their chameleons they get super defensive. It prioritizes what they want over what the animals prefer.

      We had one at work that was cohabbed. They got big enough that they began getting territorial. I knew it was time to separate them when a coworker let me know how cute it was that one wanted to come out of the enclosure and climb on them.

    Been researching chameleons for a few years. I really want one someday, specifically a Jackson's chameleon. They can be a lot of work and super sensitive to humidity and airflow. maybe I'll get one someday.....certainly don't have time or space for one right now

    Can t8 bulbs be ok?

    • @EmmaLynneSampson
      @EmmaLynneSampson  3 года назад

      You’ll want a T5 for a chameleon. T8 bulbs would only work if mounted inside of the enclosure, which I don’t recommend for a chameleon due to the risk of moisture getting on the light, or the risk of your chameleons climbing on the light. Best to use a T5 bulb on the outside of the enclosure!

      No, please put the chameleon back in the wild. Wild animals should not be taken for pets, they have a very hard time adjusting and will more than likely die. It is also usually illegal to keep wild animals.

    i want a Jacksons chameleon im a human ill get through it. Whatever happens. We'll see who wins the bug battles. Ill breed prey mantis and record everything. I saw a chameleon that got real excited for its owner. But i want them to just look good on his plant and eat whatever i show him. Ill make sure he has the rooms corners in range where do you get the diapers for them.

      Excuse me again but what paint is suitable to use on my new plastic straw highway? Ill dip the prey mantis into the tomato puree a dash of honey and top it off with egg. yolks only. make sure the little ninja can still walk then introduce it into its own squid game ive spent all morning setting up.

      But seriously its good to watch these videos first so you dont end up with a broken pet. Theres just no point at all in having any pet when you start to actually think about them. So why bother. Ide be happy with a local crow swinging by daily bringing me gifts for feed. Then he can Poff again. No Pet is the only logical anwser. We can listen to the person who just got one or listen to people who always had them. The veterans know best and will show you, THERES NO POINT.
