TotW #5 Brooklands Motor Racing Circuit: Abandoned, but not forgotten! (First Paved Circuit Ever!)

- Brooklands, the first purpose built paved and banked motor racing circuit in the world. Once the pride of Great Britain, abandoned as a track after World War II, but preserved as a landmark to itself and the early days of motorsport. Thanks to @AndysVideo for the drone video and helping me fact-check a few things. If you would like to learn more about Brooklands, check out his channel as well as his website: www.andysvideo...
Both have a wealth of information.

They have some beautiful cars, motorbikes and aircraft.
Great video. Thanks. I forced my wife to spend the day at Brooklands poking around the Museum and the disused parts of the track for my 30th. Good memories.
😆I fully plan to do the same thing at some point in the hopefully not-to-distant future.
Absolutely pitiful that they have let this track degrade as you see it here. A full blown disgrace.
I love these types of videos. Loved the drone footage and history lesson.
Glad you enjoyed it. Credit where due to Andys Video for the drone shots. Credit me for any historical inaccuracies. 😁
Great work, thanks for posting!
Outstanding video - kudos Richard and Andy. Cool to see "the power that be" doing what they can to maintain the historic significance of this facility. Now all we need is for one of the "digital driving games/sims" to create a digital version of this track that we could enjoy in both period correct and modern cars.
Thanks Jeff, it is nice to see what's left being preserved in light of the historic significance. If you don't mind doing a little fiddling, I believe there is a mod someone built for Assetto Corsa that features old Brooklands.
There is a Formula 1 simulator at Brooklands Museum where visitors can drive a McLaren round the old Brooklands track. There used to be a version which simulated the 1933 Napier-Railton which still holds the lap record for the Brooklands circuit. It was very difficult to drive as the throttle response was so violent that the car would spin if one was not very gentle with the throttle. The original car is in the museum and is often driven around the museum site. It has a Napier aero-engine with 12 cylinders totalling 24 litres.
I went to an Italian car event at Brooklands about 15 years ago, briefly got to drive on a section of the banking.
That would be an experience for sure. Do you know if that happens with any regularity or has it become infeasible with additional development around the area?
You should do a video on Bridgehampton Race Circuit, Long Island, NY
This would bee a terrific project for a virtual racing developer.
Imagine virtually racing a Bugatti and a Mercedes SS
I'm not sure if it's been done in an 'officially supported' sense, but it appears there is a community-built mod for Assetto Corsa.
the history of this place is fascinating. Have you heard of any racing circuits that are supposedly haunted?
This one, in fact. Among others, the ghost of Percy Lambert is said to walk Brooklands. He was killed there in 1913 trying to improve on his own speed/distance record. I believe this side of the pond, Indianapolis Motor Speedway is probably the most likely candidate.
James May's toy stories remade this track using slotcar track pieces
I saw that! Fun build .
Seeing what the yanks did with the Indy speedway after being inspired by brooklands and what the Italians did with monza … makes me sad that England couldn’t keep brooklands oval going/ modernised with the times and it’s sad half the track no longer exists … don’t get me wrong sliverstone is a great track but a modern brooklands could have been amazing damn ww2 nazi’s !
Less than a minute in and you say it was paved. Please do some basic research. It was not. My viewing stopped there. Could I believe anything else you say ?
Oxford English Dictionary definition for "paved": to cover an area of ground with a hard, flat surface of pieces of stone, concrete, or bricks. 🍫
We almost lost the Indianapolis motor speedway to developers at the end of ww2
