- In this video I take my rough sawn lumber to an amish friend and he mills it into beautiful tongue and groove hardwood flooring . We give you a tour of his wood shop and show you how the amish convert modern electric machinery to run with diesel engines which I found really interesting . Then I show you how to install a hardwood floor by hand ,and of course Tina and the dogs join in the fun .

Nice video again Ryan. Very well done. I am in Amish country in Pennsylvania at the moment, experiencing some hot US summer weather. It's interesting watching that guy at work in your video here. Seeing this, it does get me looking forward to when I am back in New Zealand and able to do some more work on my little cabin there again. It's winter back home right now, so I wouldn't be doing any building additions right now anyway. I will be home before the end of winter and later in the year I sure plan to do some work on the cabin....making a fire pit for cooking and a shower building hopefully! Cheers T
That’s great you can dodge winter here in the states . Pennsylvania is pretty nice I go down to Ohiopyle and paddle the lower yough quite a bit . Glad you enjoyed the shop tour!

Thanks I'm glad you found it too !! yeah the amish are pretty darn good and their kids are taught how to do stuff so young its pretty awesome . most 16 year olds could probably walk onto any framing crew and be just fine .

well a lot of people seem to lose interest without music its not easy to please everyone but I do try . I turn the music volume low so its not overpowering and I try not to overdo the voice over

Hey Nick . 😂😂 I was pretty disappointed , and it took me a few minutes to decide how to fix it without destroying a bunch of flooring. There may have been some swearing involved
What a beautiful cabin you have built for yourselves, and in such a great location. The perfect place to go and chill out whenever you feel the need. Thank you for doing the tour of the woodshop and its equipment, I found that really interesting, there was some cool innovation going on there. Great accompanying music too.

When you have to move a hide-a-bed couch take the mattress out first. Its amazing how much lighter it gets.

I've watched Dave talk about Amish sheet meta for his cabin roofl, and then seen Amish workshops in PA when visiting family, and wondered how they make sense of power worskshops. Thanks, Ryan, for having it make some sense.
no problem ! it's pretty interesting really . and to think at one time they were set up similar to that more primitive machines but still ran from the driveshafts and belts but powered with water wheels

a beautiful morning from a very hazy upstate NY. just got done doing my floors the same way. got the rough lumber from a mill near the adk's
that smokes pretty rough isn't it we had it the last few days . Nice getting flooring that way it seems like better quality in the fact that it hasn't had any time to warp on the box
@@blackspruce1861 much better quality at a quarter of the cost thru the big boxes. i did rip, plane, and t&g everything myself, had a lot of time on my hands. :)
the Amish/Mennonites are very interesting to deal with, mostly very friendly, the kids are always so happy.

that barn set up was nice , I was impressed the people who he didn't want to notice him , are going to watch and say ( ain't that Yoders barn ? ) I mean who else is set up like that ? They must be cashing in good to have that equipment, loved it ! Floor , nothing but beautiful especially all those nails by hand , also have to say the light fixture at the end , that was a great idea 💡 p.s. that light fixture was a hanging light but it was too tall for the cabin so I tore it all apart and she hung it on the wall . I found some little remote control LEDs online.

A great way to go ... After deciding what progress we'd "like" to see for the day's work, just saying "Let's see how we do" and don't stress about it. On the Perkins builder brothers channel they would drive a wood chisel next to a stubborn board that needed some persuasion and use it as a pry bar to pull the board into the desired location
Thats a good idea but in this case the tongue wasn't cut deep enough for the groove to go all the way in it was the only bad one I got .
