Amber, I know in the midst of problems you are feeling overwhelm but remember that excited grateful feeling when you purchased that dream property! Think of the land and what it offers, the garden space you have, the beautiful spacious home w room for your plants and that marvelous old stove, the memories you are making and the ones to come. Know that everyone faces issues with their homes and must do just what you are doing... fix things as one can. Homes are like everything else, they must be maintained and you guys are now pouring the love and work into that one. It will give you a lifetime of memories in return!
Someone taught me this for trying times ..hands over heart...repeat "in this moment of suffering, I offer myself compassion." Hope it helps.
That is very helpful, I'll try it. Thank you!
It is so good to see this! My husband and I bought a rough fixer upper in our dream town in the Okanagan 9 years ago. We were young and we figured we had time. It drew us because it has a massive yard, right next to a 5 acre Park.
The foundational things we did have stood the test of time. We also paid cash as we could afford it. Some of the aesthetics now need redoing. But we'll never regret foundational fixes and septic upgrades. Although nobody can see it, we have been blessed to live in a safe and well functioning home.
This has allowed us to not worry about our living conditions, have the time to build two successful businesses, hobbies and raise our family. The aesthetics can wait, it will come in your time.
Lovely to see another couple do this. ♥️
Thank you for getting it! Sometimes the groundwork isn’t pretty or aesthetic… but it’s necessary. Sounds like you have a wonderful home now, and wow you most love your location!
@@FairlyRooted ♥️
@@FairlyRooted when we first moved in all the windows had gaps and our area had problems with stink bugs. They came in through the windows and for the first year I had nightmares about them too. It will pass and yes it is what it is❤
Your doing what you can. That’s the best way to deal with things fix them all the first time. You will get there one day ❤❤❤
Oh my lord!! This reminds me of when my cousin and his wife bought a house, only it was a BAT COLONY they were hiding!!! Their first night in the home (with new born twins btw) they heard the attic come alive! Bat droppings we falling from the ceiling, its was NOT appriate for new babies!! Its so crummy when a home owner conceals a big problem like that!
I love the habitat for humanity restore! Definitely an amazing resource.
It really is, hope more pop up in time!
❤ Hey, you're doing all that you can, the best you know how! Homeownership + farming... never a dull moment !!!! Thanks for sharing Amber, one day you'll look back at this and laugh. ❤
It’s seriously never a dull moment! 😆 thank you for watching and being so supportive!
It’s your dream house so take your time and don’t feel pressured by what people want
welcome to owning an old house! there's so much to learn but it's worth it, they have character and spirit that new builds just don't. but sometimes you also want to punch the house in the face for being so difficult lol.
Our first house was an old house too… and we had to fix so many problems 😆
Carpenter ants are no joke fr
Thank you for sharing difficulties your family going thru buying a fixer-upper house. It's not all sunshines and rainbows, but wish you all the best ❤
Curious about food storage organization
Will definitely be making a video about our pantry this fall after the harvesting!
I love your realness amber 💛💛💛
When I got my concussion, my oldest daughter got lice from a birthday party she went to…I dreamt of those little bugs for months🤢. I totally get that!! And your Reno’s may not be pretty or HGTV fakeness, but it is real and probably one of the most important renos you will ever do🥰🥰🥰
I love habitat for humanity!! I replaced my windows in my old mobile home last year. We bought used windows, and picked up some free ones. My mom and I figured out how to install them ourselves. Saved a lot of money! Keep on going Amber! Sending you positive vibes ✌️!
Take it easier on yourself, Amber. One day at a time will get you to your goals. Sending love and light ♥
Thank you!! 🙏
You're right, a lot of RUclips videos only show the before and after, and it can really distort the expectations and mindset of the viewer. I really appreciate the realness and honesty.
You did make a very pretty pantry and one step at a time you will make your dreams come true love your videos all of them. I actually brag about you and your wonderful family and what a wonderful job you are doing. I know you got this!!! 😊🎉
Oh gosh, thank you!! 🙏
I’m so sorry about the ants! Thank you for always keeping it real always! ❤
So sorry to hear about all your struggles. Take your time and I pray things get better as the year progresses ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Doing all the "pretty" things will not give you and the family a safe home. This is why I love your channel. You guys have common sense and realize that to have a safe home you need to take care of the foundation stuff first. All the other stuff will come in time. You guys are doing a great job. We have had some home repairs this summer too and thankfully I have found everything on FB marketplace, but it took a while to find the items we needed. Hang in there, if I lived closer we would come and help you guys. Hugs from Northern Ontario.
As a first time home buyer I was shocked to have to deal with cockroaches for the first time. I live in the high desert of Colorado near an old sewage system and the cockroaches crawl all over the sidewalk at night, everywhere. I have to constantly get pesticides sprayed in and outside my home to keep them out. It makes me so sad when I see other bugs die too. It’s the only thing that works and I still find one or two in the house every few months. I have nightmares about them. I feel for you. My house was built in the late 1800’s and the walls have cracks forming… which we need to fix and add some more support to our old foundation.
You have to do what’s important for your families safety and long term health. You will get there and it will be good in the end. ❤️
We've been renovating for about 8 years now. It's hard but we can't afford to do it any quicker. I understand the struggle.
I love seeing your real projects and real life! Too much curated stuff on the internet. These hard to tackle projects are cool to watch as you figure them out along the way. I’m so sorry you’re having a hard year!
I hope everything works out for you guys❤❤❤❤
Thank you!! Trying!
Thanks for not pretending. Real life takes time. 🥰
It does! And even imperfect lives are good lives.
The realest content creator I follow. And we all love you for that! 🎉😊
Oh gosh thank you! Means a lot!
@FairlyRooted seriously...in sickness and in health you have always shown us the RAW, real life things and I think im speaking for alot of us when I say it keeps us so grounded. You and your family deserve every single speck of happiness you have acquired! You have EARNED all of it and you work your asses off! It doesn't go unnoticed
Sending gentle hugs to you my friend... I know it is clique... but this too shall pass and brighter days are ahead. Hang in there, even by a finger nail. You got this!
I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! I wish you luck on continuing to battle this problem. ❤️
Can you do a video on what you do with the produce you're picking everyday? Im getting overwhelmed as a first time gardener with keeping up with that part!
Home ownership is such a trip. We bought our house in November of last year and it's always something lol. The newest one is a giant old tree that we found out is rotting from the inside. A huge chunk of it fell off in a storm a few weeks ago, narrowly missing the house. It's too much of a danger to our house and the neighbors so now we are paying to have it cut down. I've been stressing about finances and hearing you say "it is what it is" really helped bring me down a few notches. This is life and you just have to roll along with the waves.
Amber, I can totally relate to everything you said and every aspect of this process. My partner and I have been building our home since last September, it's a DIY project. Thankfully my partner is well experienced in the area of home building. However, we're both self employed and adamant about not taking a loan and doing this out of pocket. We moved in 3 months ago with no windows, doors, 1/2 of the roof on, noindoor plumbing or electricity. We're making progress daily, we now have windows, indoor, plastering, steps, the entire roof on, our septic system almost complete. But just like you, we have to work on the priorities as they present themselves. The aesthetics will eventually fall in place. We continue to envision a beautiful final product. We're in the Caribbean. All the best to you with the process🎉❤❤❤❤
Thanks for being a realistic RUclipsr 👍🏻
Always!
I have friends with this exact problem which was known prior to my friends purchase. It has been years and thousands of dollars and it still continues because of where the house is located. I truly hope your story has a happy ending. Stay strong
One of my favorite parts of your youtubes, is you keep it real. I see those videos you are talking about where everything gets done right away and perfectly; or so it seems. That is not my life, we are used to the bumps and mini disasters at our house.
Thank you for being someone who gets it! 🤗
I have renovated neglected houses for many years, when my husband and I where young. Trying to navigate the work, with 3 children, their pets, very tight budgets and being very resourceful and frugal did take its toll. However tough it got we kept going and the hard work and sacrifice and going without and working till exhaustion has paid off and we got there on the end. No one understood why and what we were doing, now they say its alright for you!!
Keep going, each step takes you closer, even if its slower than you want. You have a beautiful family and your house will be beautiful too.
Could you do work away, to get helpers.
Good luck, you will get there ❤ love and support from Suffolk UK xxxx
Sending you love from Winnipeg!!
I appreciate the realness as usual
Amber, it’s ok for things to take time. We’ve lived in our house 13 years and we still haven’t come around to aestechics. We live in our house and appriciate it every single day and of course it would be nice to have the wallpaper that’s our style etc. and we will have that, one day. We have done a lot of renovations and reparations that isn’t as obvious to the eye but good for the longevity of our property 🏡
Have you thought about doing a crowd funding for parts of the renovations needed? I would love to contribute to that!
You are doing an amazing job, houses take years to get up together x you’ll get there one day and it will be just a faded memory not a HD nightmare xx love and light blessings x
OH, I'm so early do it once.
So glad to have you back. ❤
Sending you love and support.
You are doing such a wonderful job - I'm holding you in my thoughts with your family.....keep going.....loads of love from Oxfordshire, UK
Old houses are so beautiful but such a pain to work on😅 besides the old roof, windows and facade, our house is great! But it's just...crooked. Not a single wall is straight, the floors not leveled. So much so, I had to replace my wheely chair, because I would roll across the room🤣 Sending you so much love! X
Bahaha 🤣 oh I get it. Thanks for getting it too!
Very real and inspiring video. Although I will probably never be able to afford land like that, you constantly remind me to do good for the planet and for people 😊 Also wishing you a full recovery!
all the best for you and your family Amber!
Sending love and uplifting energy to you and Joseph and your family! You are doing a wonderful job putting one foot in front of the other, and getting done what you can with what you have ♥️
We're in the same boat. Early 80s house that was totally neglected (and had a previous fire which we were not informed about), but the Ontario economy, you can only do so much at a time. I guess the silver lining is that these experiences will stay with or kids, and they will have first-hand understanding of how important proper care and maintenance are. Good luck with the Reno's, hope you don't have to put out fires to much longer! ✌️
We had an extensive carpenter ant problem in our log house many years ago. We were told at the time you have to get the queen in order to effectively get rid of them once and for all, and she doesn’t leave the nest. We used diazinon in powder form in a safe spot out of little ones’ reach sprinkled in their their usual path in and out. Workers bring it back to the queen. Not sure you can still buy it as this was ~28 years ago or whether it might work in your situation, but may save $$ if it did. We have well issues and are replacing our weeping bed too with money we don’t have either lol-it’s crazy expensive (we’re in Ontario too). We’re having a “being hit every which way” year as well, so my heart goes out to you. You’re very resourceful so will triumph in the end I’m sure! Take care.
I wish u and ur family only the best. May blessings be abundant. Love ur videos
I'm happy you found everything early on prior to making extra renovations!! Sending good vibes and hopes that everything gets resolved soon so you can rest easy 😊
you are doing well ❤
You got this!!
You are doing the best you can, we have a 100 year old house and we are fixing little by little, in this economy that’s all we can do👍👍❤️❤️
I’m so sorry the problems with the hunts. I hope you solve that smoothly.
We have a lot of problems with water in our house and the previous owners hide it from us too 😩
Oh no, that's awful! Good to know others have gone through similar issues however...
Stealing construction supplies is a great way to keep costs down!
I bought a fixer upper in 2019 in Ireland. We knew it was bad but we were not prepared for how bad it really was because we bought it through family and they didn't tell us. So now post COVID, the cost of major renovations has quadrupled. We have no option but to completely demolish and put a modular house in it's place. That will give us 30 years to live in a safe house and save for a permanent structure.
Hope you solve the problem soon!
U.S. have home inspectors, worth the money. You are doing great!
We hired a home inspector, paid way too much for to inspect, and everything was under condition of inspection. He didn’t find any of the ants or ant damage. He missed it all together.
@@FairlyRooted oof, that stings
As a pest control expert I can assure you that many people sell their home when they’re faced with an issue like pests instead of just dealing with them. We see it all the time in regards to carpenter ants, German roaches, bed bugs and even mice.
I understand you’re trepidation with pesticides but I highly recommend you continue to treat preventably on the exterior only both spring and fall once the problem is eradicated. Where your house is situated (in the middle of nature) this will continue to be a boundary you will have to fight.
It’s definitely a thing for people to just not deal with issues… which is a bit crazy to us… we’d rather take care of things. We sprayed inside and outside the home, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future!
❤
You're doing what you can and you have to try think past this difficult time and remember why u bought that house in the first place. I say "it is what it is" a lot too, we've had a difficult year. Also, "this too shall pass" , which it will. Sorry to hear the problems you've been having. I once lived in a house where a load of flies hatched out from maggots and swarmed the kitchen 😱🤢 yep it is the stuff of nightmares, but it will go away
I miss seeing your sweet family.
So with the picky comment. There are moments where I feel like it's OK to be picky. This is hopefully your forever home. Pick and choose what you want to be picky about 🤷♀️🤷♀️
Hey Amber, please try spraying with neem oil for the ants.
I'm so sorry ❤😭 I have been wondering how to get rid or termites or ants effectively in way that less toxic. I keep hearing people say air your house out for a long time.
Life happens 🫶🏼🙏🏼
Found you after so long!!?
12:09 - c-ants are unpredictable. You could have them one year, and not have for the next 5. There's no way to anticipate them.
I'm so sorry this is happening. I wish I could afford to donate or send money. I know so many people are struggling like most of us right now.
We wouldn’t ask for donations/money for this… we always do stuff ourselves, it just takes time. There is too much going on in the world, and there are many people who need real help. But thank you for the thought. I appreciate you being here.
We had rats last year and I was going so crazy I couldn’t even sleep. And I was planning my wedding that summer 😅 thankfully they’re gone now!! Ya it’s definitely not pretty with home ownership
I had a hunch there would be too much to fix and too little money. Unfortunately it’s the same for us. Upsizing home and land is not all it’s cracked up to be . Sorta wish you hadn’t moved. You had an amazing setup at your old place . We had already moved by the time you did and when I saw that you were about to upsize land and home … I remember thinking “don’t do it” !! There is just so much involved with maintenance, property tax, mortgage and projects that it’s not worth it to be honest
Honestly could do without the added work, but we are happy we moved. We had been trying to get out of the city and suburbs for a decade and seriously looking for 5 years... We really really didn’t like being there.
4:29 - Perhaps you should consider offering the carpenter ants something more palatable and/or accessible - some rotten stump or something? As for the septic? Forget about it and get into composting toilets and humanure! See? Simple! :)
That was the first thing I looked into, but we also have to do what’s legal in our area :(
Show whatever you can, day in your life videos, anything, people will watch it, and you will generate income from the videos, even with you just talking like this. People still watch it. Just found your channel btw, and I think you can do something good with it! Goodluck
11:26 - actually, that's the only way to deal with c-ants, (don't) ask me how I know :)
It's a shame there aren't any natural solutions for pest control. I'd feel uneasy spraying pesticides in the house as well 😟
Hugs
Mint ant don't like it and I know there's other plants that help to keep bugs away from the house you just have to plant they near the house.
🤍
Wow Thats so nasty that you have that ant problem now too on your shoulders. You allready work so hard. Hope you get rit of them soon. You do what you can. ❤
Comment
Ty!!
8:42 - to be honest, I'm waiting for your hair care routine :) not the renovations stuff... Anything construction related can take from 4 to 10 years, again, living in the real world, like all your viewers...
6:42 - nobody finishes a house in a day :) Perhaps you should unsubscribe from some of the channels you're watching :)
You have to do what’s important for your families safety and long term health. You will get there and it will be good in the end. ❤️
