I actually found you from your Mario videos and I know those are more popular, but I really enjoyed this video the most man. Great work, it convinced me to pick up the collection on Steam

@1:10:36 - This is where I lost it back in the day... and remains one of the main reasons why Baten Kaitos remains in my top 3 favorite RPGs of all time. None of us saw this coming, and to be blind-sided so hard like this... it was such an emotional moment. I was literally sobbing. (I never played the English release, but played a Japanese import shortly after it was released)

...I really think that the English localization might have greatly affected the impact of Kalas's character... because when I was playing the original on the GameCube... I never got that feeling that he was "an ass". He was a little naive here and there, but I never felt that he was being a dick for no reason. I really need to play through the remaster to see if my opinion has changed since my Japanese ability has greatly advanced in these past 20 years... lol

@1:14:15 I entirely agree with you here. I had my own fair share of struggles with MANY of these boss fights, and even some of the mazes gave me trouble... I still remember being pissed about it back then, so you've gotta know it was REAL anger... lol But from a narrative and creative perspective, the game did SO MANY THINGS right--and new for the time--that I was absolutely enamored with it.

Amazing Sakuraba OST, Honne backgrounds, actually fun turn-based combat, a lot of fun interactivty and light puzzle solving. Maybe the most underappreciate JRPG ever

Baten Kaitos is such an amazing game. I'm really glad I already found it in 2004.
Looking forward to your video on Origins.

the echo effect on the voice acting was indeed an artistic choice. The echo effect wasn't applied to the voice files themselves and the mod you used simply didn't bother to put in the work to copy the effect in the original dub perhaps because the echo was widely panned. It was even present in the GC versions and it was even part of the surround sound feature the game had. If you wanted to avoid the voice echo on original hardware you could set the game to surround sound in the options while using a stereo set up and you would not lose any sounds.
I don't agree with your assessment that the battle system leads to hands where you can't play because that's a deck building issue on your part. It's like if people complained about having too many energy cards in the Pokemon TCG. The answer is that your ratios are off and you're including too many situational cards in your deck. I would also praise the game for including a lot of cards which can both attack and defend.

the card numbers in the corners is a bigger problem in the remaster than it was in the original game, due to design of the gamecube controller, where there were little notches around the control sticks, so it was easy to select those corners. In that version, the headache does what it's supposed to do, just changing things up ever so slightly to through you off your game. With a switch controller, you're spot on. Maybe they should have accounted for the different controller and swapped these two input-conditions

As a big xeno fan i picked this up a few months ago and just recently finished it and then started the second one.
Its Super good, i love how you can see the things that would make xenoblade 2 (specifically) great in the future.
That And the esoteric stuff just really really fuckin does it for me lol.
Witch is good because before i started baten Kaitos i had just beat xenosaga 1.
Anyway give it a try if you haven't, its worth a time through.
Edit: i figured the final fight was for levity in the moment, that it was a joke by the developers.

Monolith soft ALWAYS makes a battle system that is unique and enjoyable, even when it has flaws. I absolutely love the card based mechanics, although yes discarding should be a thing

Wouldn't it have been interesting if Color Splash had gone the Baten Kaitos route with the battle system...

Monolith Soft sure has developed a lot of interesting games beyond Xenoblade, I myself would like to try their DS game Soma Bringer at some point.

Great review! I love the GameCube version of this game, and I loved the voice acting even though Xhella’s acting was pretty bad. I feel like most other characters did great though, and I wouldn’t want to play the remaster without the English voices. I also thought Geldoblame had a GREAT voice.

I was sooooo excited for the remasters until I learned about the lack of English dub. I didn't buy them just because of that. I actually love the dub.

I attempted a 100% run of Biting Kratos. I missed one thing that no one ever mentions. ....Never again. Its not like theres some cool hidden reward for a 100% Gathering. But still.
