I'm so blown away by this! This is truly revolutionary for working with Pixel Art! I started getting into game dev and have been grinding away at animations frame by frame, creating a ghost first then drawing over the ghost once I'm happy with the animation. This could save so much time and still have a similar impact in the feel of some animations. Is there plans to unmarry this tool from the game and be stand alone software? I'll definitely be buying this over the weekend and going ham on some creations! Incredible work Smack Studio! Y'all have reinvigorated my drive to over 9000!!
Thanks for checking us out! 🙂I hope it help on your game dev journey! We've gotten a lot of requests for a standalone app- we're considering that for a future release!
@@SmackStudioGame That's fantastic to hear. I hope your team is able to make that come to fruition. It will change the pixel art game development for the better I feel.
@@SmackStudioGame That will change the 2D Game development if this will have a standalone app 2d editor. I will definitely buy the standalone! Best 2D character editor to this date.
Hands down best animation program I have ever seen. And if you want to play a Smash Style fighting game you can with the character you just made!? This really is a hidden gem this better blow up when it releases
This game/program is insane. I just got it for creating my own animations for games cause I was having trouble with the time frame for creating one animation... This technology is mind boggling with how fast it makes you create characters and to animate them. To then export into another game engine with the partitions. This is saving me hundreds of hours on long term animating in other programs like Aseprite alone. All I have to do is create the look of what I want in Aseprite then import the sprite or sprites cause you got to create all their individual body parts then put them all together in Smack Studio and bam. Full working character. Damn amazing! Thank you for creating this tutorial! A standalone of this software is a must!
@@SmackStudioGame Thank you! Actually using the studio I have feedback already. 1. A choice to remove black outlines/edge lines added by the program in timeline. Not your drawn ones from original sprites. I wish you could have a button to remove them only and not yours from the finished added sprite. Plus the edges don't color in on your sprites on the edges especially if you are just doing a 2D type character for a game and all your outlines are already made and they are different colors. a) I had a head with no black outlines connecting neck to the body but the black outlines are drawn on them. Even offsetting the sprite doesn't get rid of them. b) I had clothes put on a character as an example and the outlines were all replaced by black. Like a dark yellow edge was replaced by all black. Obviously some of it due to it being 3D now. Even flattening the 3D part doesn't fix things sometimes and it can remove lines you made on the original sprite. But it does destroy sometimes your own made lines. Not all the time. 2. In the animation rig you should be able to adjust the offset in preview and could save that in the animation rig itself. Maybe even adjust the 3D placements of the sprite layers to. So you can just plop down in any place from the Animation rig your truly made character anywhere in the timelines. 3. When placing my character I saved in the timeline the sprites seem to have gone wonky and moved slightly when they were perfect in the animation rig in editor. 4. The layering system should be automatically done and offset from the position they are in the animation rig. Fixing many of the above problems. 5. I guess another would be to have a bigger tool palette like spray can and more tools when editing sprites. 6. Crashing is a problem. I have lost over 2 hours of work once already when editing in the animation rig. Clicked add sprite by clicking feature and it crashed over and over again even upon restarting and trying again. So I only use the drag feature to add my sprites. Top couple things I have had problems with so far the most. But best program I have ever used to create animations super fast. Loving the entire program! 5. I guess another would be to have a bigger tool palette like spray can and more tools when editing sprites.
I‘m planing on making a beat em up game and till now i was always thinking about how hard it would be to animate my charakters but with this awesome programm i can confidently start on it
This is amazing. Are there any new in-depth tutorials of a new character made entirely from scratch? Also, with the export feature, would it be possible to use the created sprites (and maybe even export entire models from within Smack Studio) in games of an entirely different genre? Like, say a 3D action adventure game similar to a Souls-like?
I created a char by drawing over an existing template. But this program really, REALLY needs help files and documentations so users can explore the advanced commands and techniques
Why does the description say Download FREE on Steam? Is there like a free demo of the editor on there or was the game free beforehand? Edit: Just saw the steam page is still labeled under the tags F2P and still mentions it as a F2P in descriptions even though it isn't anymore. Might want to update that.
One of my fighers is a machoke. but this machoke is a bit bigger in size. He has a force field with big hitbox that deals 20 damage, 20 knockback and 0.2 knockback scale. And his A button attack combo is very quick consisting of 8 punches that deals 10 damage without knockback and finished with a kick that deals 20 damage, 20 knockback and 0.2 knockback scale in a 56 frame space.
Love the software absolutly amazing, but i was wondering how i import my own sprites to use for animation? whenever i use the import function I can't see my sprite in the characterrig section
Hey, really glad you're liking the app! We can't post screenshots here, but if you join our discord we can help figure out where you're hitting an issue: smackstudio.com/discord We plan to release more tutorials soon that could also help!
I know this was made a while ago but how do I make it so sprite changes are linked to different animations? Like if I wanted a character to have X eyes when hit, or in the case of the video, only have Granite wear those sick glasses when they do a forward strong attack?
If you want a body part to be swapped in one specific animation (like eyes or glasses), you can add a new View to that body part in the animation rig details and draw the new details on it. Views can be swapped in and out as you animation using the "Rig Layer Configuration" tab!
my question is answered on discord. the stats can be limitless. So it could be the overal limit of 2.147.483.647 in each stat otherwise it might go in the minus. I still need to buy this game
Really appreciate it! You can disable body parts to hide them from view during an animation, so you'd be able to export specific layers by keeping the rest hidden. We don't have an official layer export tool yet!
@@SmackStudioGame Great job with the tooling so far! Are there any plans / dates to add export support? Right now the process of exporting part layers is super tedious (even the method you mentioned gets incredibly time consuming), especially if someone is working from the templates

Any help??

There are most likely sprite layers with the old drawings still on them. Make those layers invisible and the animation rig visible and your sprites should show up!
@@KennethBernardotoons The layers we mentioned are the timelines shown in the timeline pane at the top- each timeline has a name on the left. Find the timelines named "Sprites", click them to select them, and then click the trash icon to delete them. Hope that helps!
You can rescale your character by clicking on Stats (in the top left corner), and then changing the Scale value. We also will release an update in the near future allowing you to move the canvas around for any type of sprite (currently, you need to set it as an Effect Layer in the Sprite Layer Properties in order to move it around)
I'm loving this game so far, but I can't figure out something, what are "right axis value" and "up axis value"? I swear I've tried to figure them out but I've gotten nowhere.
Do you mean the variables in the character editor? Those are numeric values that tell you what direction the player is pressing on the control stick or movement keys, ranging from -1 to 1 (for right axis, a value of -1 means the player is pressing left. For up axis, a value of -1 means the player is pressing down.)
