As an a academy award nerd who loves the ceremony and dreams of being cemented in history by winning one, one day, I have a huge pet peeve about snubs. I don’t believe a “snub” exists. They can only award 1 actor each year and can only nominate 5. There are hundreds of great performances to choose from and hundreds more that won’t ever be considered. It goes without saying that it’s impossible to please everyone. For everyone that says “so and so should have won over so and so”, think about what you’re saying. I guarantee you that in an alternate universe if your choice had won, we’d be calling the other actor a snub. Think of it this way, it’s not always about “best actor”. (They should change the phrasing) That’s not a thing. It’s often about honoring someone’s career. In the case of Leo DiCaprio. I’d venture to say that’s actually not his best work. But the world was ready for him to win and willing it to happen. He won because he’s turned out like 6 Oscar nominations or something out of a lifetime of great performances. They were honoring his career. It’s a celebration. And I do blame the academy for not marketing it that way. Maybe it pulls an audience in more if we call it a “competition”.
