Many thanks to Steve Todoroff for being instrumental in getting the footage to Alan Gold, the segment producer.
I’m 70 years old and I still play Leon’s albums all the time. My very first concert was Bonnie and Delaney in Burlington Vermont. From that time on in comes Leon Russell. Absolutely a main influence in my life. I also had another favorite album called Tumbleweed Connection. It’s ironic how Elton and Leon came together. I’ve seen them both. I’m so lucky.
I was tulsa born and grew up listening to leon and the tulsa sound. I used to see him when i was cruising brookside. He always waved. Saw him 2 weeks before he died at the hard rock casino. He was
Magnificent.
I had "discovered" Leon back in about '74. I knew he was legendary even then. We lost a really good man when he went home. Rest In Peace, old friend. You are, and will be greatly missed. 😢
God bless Elton John and rest in peace Leon Russell! I have loved you since I was 14 years old.
Leon Russell was part of my CHILDHOOD, I'll NEVER forget him!!
Leon Russell...he's 100% American.
It was my honor to see him perform live.
Leon Russell is probably my favorite musician. I played piano back in the 70s and I absolutely loved Leon Russell's music and his piano playing. I owned every one of his albums - oh this is embarrassing - on 8 track. 😂 I'm so glad Elton John stayed with him. It was a sad day when he passed. RIP Leon! We still love you!
God bless Elton for making Leon's last years fruitful and fun for him. Rest easy Leon. We will play your music forever.
Yes thank you elton
Taco Gillespie
especially for the new bus...😆
yes.
Amen
I was aware of Leon, being a child of the 50s growing up in the 60s. But, with the release of Hank Wilson's Back with Billly Byrd, I became a die hard fan. I bought the original vinyl, let it slip away. Then some caskets and finally the CD. My children managed to swipe the cassettes away. I still have the cd inmy automobile and listen mainly on long trips. RIP Leon
The oldest dance hall in Texas, Gruene Hall where you played so many times misses you lovely Leon. Your music makes you immortal. God bless you.
Leon Russell, you are so amazing! I have been to countless rock concerts in the past 43 years or so, and I recall yours as one of the very best! In those days it was common to work my way up to standing in the front row (everyone on the floor was standing--no seats) and you looked me right in the eye. That moved me.....and kinda scared me at the tender age of 16. Your concert went on and on, for over 3 hours. Love you Leon!!
RIP Leon Russell! Saw you in the 70's. Fell in love with your music then and have not stopped listening since then!
Wanted to cry myself after viewing this piece. Three cheers for Sir Elton John!!! What an unbelievably kind and generous and selfless bit of authentic caring and resurrection. Truly beautiful to witness one loving soul touch the life of another. Leon Russell has always been (at least in my inner world) one of the greatest American musicians, and Sir Elton John was the performer of my first ever rock and roll show (American School in London, 1973). And I believe Leon passed away not too long after this collaboration. An exquisite example of the human capacity for selfless and caring behavior, I believe I always will hold Elton John in high regard for what he did for Leon Russell and for both of their audiences.
Well said! Thanks.
Elton ringing up an old friend
Leon getting appreciated for his significant contribution to the quality Americana music of his roots in Oklahoma, PRICELESS . Every time I hear tightrope or other Leon classic I realize what a one off Leon was. Coming to the stage age 14 with Jerry Lee Lewis like he did with the music already steeped in his soul, he then made himself a legend. He was humble but so deserved of praise. Thanks Sir Elton, for doing the right thing and making Leon feel our love. 🤷🏼♀️
Got that right!
Leon Russell. One of the greatest musicians, composers, song writers was all but forgotten. Way to go Elton John!
Everett Patterson
Not in my life....Never ever from 1969 Savanah Georgia he was always in my heart and on my turntable 💜✌😢
Mine too! How could you forget him once you had heard him or seen him?
Leon was my first concert back in 1972 - a lot of people said I had a great time that night! I'll always love Leon.
My first concert too in ‘72 in Boston! I’ll never forget it !
Thank you Sir Elton for shining a spotlight on a true classic. Leon, you're amazing!
yeah hes dead now, oh well
My 1970’s Favorite Rock-n-Roll Hero. Saw him a couple of times in the ’70’s. SOOOO Many Hits !
Thank you so much, Elton, for bringing Leon back to us ❤. And Leon, please know that your music and presence were such a gift and highlight to so many lives. I know you were to mine.
Remembering Leon. ❤ 🌿🍃🌺
I love Elton for getting Leon back on the road. I saw him in Portland last year. I feel blessed.
I came four weeks from finally seeing my hero LIVE in California this coming December....HE was THE BEST. I adored Leon Russell...
RIP Leon...I'm so honored to see you perform live in Orlando before you left this Earth! :(
He is now truly in the hands of angels. Rest in peace love.
a musician's musician, a song writer's song writer, one of Oklahoma's favorite sons, a laid back country boy turned icon that made some very special music..Thank you Leon Russel for doing it your way....
To some of us hick Indiana teens in the early 70's Leon was by far our favorite.
Elton - you get 5* for being A REAL GOOD PERSON/ARTIST/AND OBVIOUSLY A GREAT FRIEND. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING MY FAV TO THE SPOTLIGHT - AS HE SO DESERVED TO BE THERE.
GOD BLESS YOU SPECIAL ELTON - YOU DO TOO!
HUGS!!! THANK YOU!
Thinking lately about Leon and his huge contribution to music before he passed away a few years ago....what you said 5 years ago was very touching.

I miss Leon on this plane and Joe Cocker too.
Absolutely the stamp of vast talent and the era. Leon did so many recording sessions, with everyone from Sinatra to Aretha.
I believe there's a video of him playing with Aretha, early and worth a view, if you haven't seen it.
Best Wellbeing ...!
@@bethbartlett5692 thanks so much for reaching out with your quick reply which I honestly was happy & suprised to see. Oh you mention Joe Cocker, (Mad Dogs and Englismen no doubt). What a great effort by Leon to get that concert together in the US. I was only a teen then, too young to go but now with RUclips I see bits and pieces of that event & others. I am amazed at the tremendous quantity of musicians that Leon was associated with in so many ways. Did you know Leon personally I wonder? I love corresponding about this long gone era, so I kindly ask if you dont mind, to share your memories or thoughts on this topic anytime. I will of course respond in time with my views or thoughts. Side note: Were you aware that Elton John came to Leon's rescue 9 years ago? I was so touched reading that .... Peace/Harmony always Beth. Stay safe. Will (I/Mx)
The great Leon Russell! Love you man!!!
Thank you, Elton, for being such a good soul, and for giving recognition to a well-deserving master talent! Love you, Leon -- always have, always will. Hope to see you performing live soon.
Today is a sad day for all of us and for music....... RIP sweet Leon... you will be sorely missed.... forever.
Another reminder that we're not the young bucks anymore. Leon was one of the all-time greats. Saw him in a small dinner theatre in Chicago a couple years ago. Was a little slower than the old days but still had more soul in his little finger than most people have in their whole body. RIP Leon. We miss you already!
Leon is larger than life! No age here, just real life. Yes the master of time and space? Perhaps quite minimized describing my feelings. SO GLAD to be able to see Leon on August 23. HIGH PRIORITY!!!!
Leon seemed so humble to me. Such a beautiful man.
Amazingly, I don't think Leon really realized how talented he was until he heard Elton say it......so glad those two are champions of each other.....they both are great. Have been a fan since the 70's of both of them......keep rocking guys!
Leon's great. Always loved his music.
RIP Leon Russell.....this is a sad sad day....your music will live on forever Loved you for a long time. My very first concert was seeing you in 1969 ✌ Peace Love ✌
R.I.P. Dear man, thank you so much for all the music~
I love Leon's music and he will forever be missed, I grew up in Tulsa and my dad did some work for him & Roy Clark and will always remember, may he RIP
It is great to see Leon Russell still rock'n and rolling after all over the world. He is one of the greatest musician ever.
It takes a angel to help lift another angel who has fallen . now both are angels and for our LORD both can fly higher & higher . GOD BLESS THEM BOTH !!
I saw Leon with Willie Nelson in 77 and will never forget that night !! Rip Leon, you have entertained us well !
Beautiful gentleman. Thank you for sharing your wonderful gifts with us.
I would have loved to see Leon Russell perform live.
Years ago, I went to concert in St. Louis MO to see Bob Dylan. We didn’t have the greatest seats, but could clearly see Leon Russell sitting in about the 6th row center in front of the stage. I didn’t know where to look first, as I was big Leon Russell fan…Hank Wilson was an aka name. What a talent!
I missed him living over sasha few years is my guess but upon introduction I fell deeply in love with Leon every song every outfit woodstock era a time we gathered for peace was magic
and Leon and Sir Elton have their own magic ....
I was 13 when I went to my first rock concert and saw Leon Russell. 🧡
Leon was born and raised just a few blocks from where I live in Lawton, Oklahoma.
I heard Leon on one of his last concerts. I grew up in Tulsa. Many famous musicians of the time snuck in and out of his studio. Leon could make the piano sing, Boogie, pray, dance. He was a master of his craft and extremely talented. Yes I'm sorry he didn't get the recognition of many. Yes I thank Elton John for attempting to rectify the situation when he had nothing to gain from it. Pure class.
THANK YOU SIR ELTON FOR BRINGING THE MASTER BACK❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm so very happy to have had him in my life as he got the best of me
I'm so glad he got to make a comeback before he passed. You will never be forgotten Leon.
i grew up hearing my dad play Leon 40-50 years ago, then got a chance to see him a year or two before he passed in State College, PA. What a great show.
Wow - I have loved them both for decades. This just warmed my heart. Beautiful. I saw Leon in concert twice in South Florida and was a major fan "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" and the list goes on and on and on. And 70s Elton all amazing. Love these guys. Oh, the wild and crazy memories! Thank you 💗💗💗
RIP Leon...
One of the all time greats.
I always loved Leon Rusell and got to see him in concert twice. One of those times was with Elton John. Thanks so much Elton for bringing Leon Russell back to us. RIP Leon

Very cool, indeed. Love this & what a great guy Elton is period, but to do this was wonderful & Leon R. sure deserved it. What a wonderful thing that Russell did, to turn around and do a song for & about Elton. Two great legends, greatly affected my life, deeply. Thanks guys. 💜💚 Much Love.
Thank you Elton! Leon is my main man! I can relate back so far with him! Finally got to see him recently at Milwaukee WI!
I miss Leon. Glad I saw him in 2015 at South Orange Performing Arts Center. Thank U Elton for the help, encouragement, & reminding us how great Le9n was & is.

i NEVER forgot Leon in those "supposed forgotten years. His Albums, tapes & CD"s are ALL readily available. Also, Elton jOHN CALLED HIM HANDSOME, & yesssss HE Was & still is. Just saw him in PA again in spring "16
Oh he had those eyes and that gorgeous hair, then all that talent. Yes, he was a very good looking man.
So ahemmmmmm ahemmmm sorry it's not political correct.......wicked, bad me was thinking.......ahemmmmmm i was just thinking so gay!! Just a thought I couldn't help it.
Elton really loved Leon. Saw his
Soul. Thank you Elton. Leon was a real man. Few around these days. God I love him. Lucia
I saw Leon live in Portland Oregon in 1971. I had no idea that he and Elton John were old friends. I never forgot that concert (Leon threw the flowers from a vase on his piano in the audience and I was near where they landed in the crowd). I've never forgotten Leon Russell, either. Now that we have things like Ultrasone 650 headphones and high-end audio reproduction equipment I couldn't have imagined over 40 years ago, Leon's old tunes sound better than ever!
Sir Elton, I got very misty eyed watching some of these vids. I will always be indebted to you for bringing Leon back from obscurity. I'm a child of the 60's and grew up playing in bands in the 70's. Lots of Mad Dogs and Englishmen and Tumbleweed Connection. I wore both those records out! Still play for a living to this day.
RIP Leon .... Thank you for the beautiful music.....
my heart is broken. Leon is gone. His legendary music will live on.
Hands of Angels. What a great title for a song.

Way to go Elton John! I saw Leon play in Corpus Christi Texas about 1981. I missed getting to see Leon Russell play in Cedar Park Texas a few years ago. Now he is gone. I became a fan of both of you in the 1970's!
When Leon was born I think his heart was beating in time to the back beat of rock n roll.
Toby Blake

Thank you for sharing this wonderful footage
I remember meeting Leon and Gailard Sartain, at Bell's Amusement, Tulsa. I was 6 years old and already a Leon fan. That was 1973-4ish. Had an older sister, that worked @ Bell's during the summers in the early 70s. She also attended the infamous show at the Oilers BB stadium; when George Harrison & Clapton were hanging with Leon. Mazeppa introduced the band to the crowd. One of the finer moments in my history. R.I.P. Leon. That sound would never been, 'loosey- goosey,' without you.
Sir Elton is very generous. He was very shy, when we were at a record 'meet and greet'. I like a lot of his music. Leon was a fav' for years.
Wow Elton n Leon were the piano heroes in my life seen Leon in concert along time ago in Nash.we deffintly lost a great one can you amagine the music in heaven my dad and brother in law are a part both great guitarist hope they have my seat behind my drums waiting rip Leon Wilkerson and rusell Ricky skinner and dad Roy Conner wow all the greats in one place you will all be greatly missed
