I've been teaching Chem since 1977 and have tried everything to get the concept of the Mole into students. This is a very useful tool, many thanks for posting.
Just saw this today, moles make much more sense now, and was surprised this was done in Garry's Mod. Now one of the catchiest songs I've ever heard in my life.
Mrs. Gore ugh had this in my head for 6 years now. Had to memorize it and sing it in front of the class... why do teachers have to torture us so much!!
Lyrics: A mole is an an animal that burrows in the ground, Or the spot on your chin that you gotta shave around. But there's another kind of mole of interest to me, That's the kind of mole they use in chemistry. Chorus: A mole is a unit, or have you heard, containing six times ten to the twenty-third, That's a six with twenty-three zeros at the end, Much too big a number to comprehend. Say you had a mole of pennies to distribute 'round the world, Give to each of the five billion grownups, boys, and girls, There wouldn't he a single soul down and out of luck, Cause everybody in the world would get a trillion bucks. Or Say you had a mole of paper and stacked it toward the sky, Paper's awful thin, but that pile would get so high, It'd reach up into outer space, in fact I think you'd find, It'd go up to the moon and back, eighty billion times. Chorus Suppose a mole of marshmallows fell upon the planet, Over each square inch of land and sea, think that you could stand it?That layer would be twelve miles high and of course block out the sun, We're talking close to five million trillion tons. Well, maybe we could save ourselves if we all started eatin', One marshmallow each second, not two 'cause that'd be cheatin'. With five billion people munching, how long do you think it'd take? Forty million years and that's without a bathroom break. Chorus But say you had a mole of atoms, would the pile be immense, Should I say the answer now, or leave you in suspense? Well, atoms are so very, very small, you understand, You could hold a mole of atoms in the palm of your hand. So shake a little sugar in the middle of your palm Now you don't want to spill it, so try and stay calm. You hardly can imagine and barely realize, There's more atoms in that sugar than stars up in the sky. Chorus
My chemistry teacher put this in class. When I heard the TF2 Theme I shouted "Team Fortress!" then I saw Gmod, and then again "G-MOD!" ...needless to say, everyone in the class was like "...wuuut?"
I think I was the only person who had any idea what was going on... I am a sad panda and one of few nerds in my whole school. But this seriously made my semester. TF2 theme made me surprised me, and I was like uh... then it was GMOD, I was was like YES!
Thank you so much. I first and last heard this song in jr. high science almost 10yrs ago. Brings back memories of class with my friends and crazy science teacher.
I was the only person in my class that knew that the beginning song was the TF2 theme song. And the only that knew that the actual video was made in Gmod...
Well if everyone got a trillion bucks _everyone_ would be "down and outta luck" because 1. people would be buried miserably and 2. the money would be completely devalued
My highschool chemistry teacher also showed us this. On this day of my cat's death, this is the only thing that's cheering me up rn. Thanks for ten years of earworm
my chemistry teacher played this for us this week and we loved it. Everyone almost died laughing at the man with the broken, spinning neck and his face lmbo
My Chemistry teacher sent us all this video to watch over the summer. I wasn't too hopeful until the TF2 theme started playing. I doubt that counts as an excuse to play TF2 instead of doing work.
Its Michael Offutt with 2 T's btw. just so its credited correctly. We made ice cream to celebrate mole day. we then had to convert mole's to particles. wooo for 6.022 x 10^23
My science teacher showed this in class yesterday and the people who didn't know what gmod was were freaked out when gman spun his head around at 3:10 xD
@Ramirosk8er Actually it is more precise when you say 6.022x10^23. They just used 6x10^23 because it fit the beat better. Also, SigFigs are in account.
Chem class was made instantly better when my teacher pulled this up, a couple years ago. Is it odd I've taken the time to memorize the song to sing along? :P
There's something magical about seeing GMOD in school.
I know right?
And guess what? My teacher just showed the class this.
I agree
pain. I have 1.4k hours on this damn game and she just sent the link to this in the teams call
Yess
I love how when my teacher put this on, everyone was questioning what they were watching and I'm silently screaming to myself, "GMOD!!!!!"
Spartacus Smith same!
Spartacus Smith I was like "wtf is that gmod" and some kid said "yep"
Like Wise
11 years later and teachers still showing this in school
(sept. 27 2019)
same
12 years later and teachers still showing this in school
(dec. 7 2020)
It is 2021 and nothing changed
Still showing it now!
still showing two years later (sept. 23 2021)
I've been teaching Chem since 1977 and have tried everything to get the concept of the Mole into students. This is a very useful tool, many thanks for posting.
wholesome
Me teacher showed this in class today xD I completely freaked out when I saw that it was done with Garry's Mod :)
My teacher just played this in our college chemistry class and i couldn't be any more surprised to see not only tf2 music but GMOD
Ms. Majczak, thank you. Also I heard the TF2 theme song in class and freaked out. -The only kid who enjoyed physics in the entire class.
This is chemistry
the fuck. my teacher put this shit on in my class, and i heard the TF2 theme song. Nice FPS
Saw this in chem, your tf2 intro earraped the classroom as my teacher sprinted to the computer to turn it down
17 years later and teachers are still showing this video
(Apr 22nd 2024)
it was eye opening seeing G-mod in my chemistry class, no one else recognized it, actual silly moment
Same
Saw this in chemistry.
play this in my head every time I do a mole calculation, got me through middle school chemistry no sweat XD
I've used this for the last five years. It's a great song and I have seen it get stuck in student's heads! I'm still using it. Great job!
Wow!
This comment really made me realize- I made this FIVE YEARS AGO. And you're still using it? That's incredible! :D
Was not expecting gmod from my chem teachers link.
My chemistry teacher played this in class a few days ago, and it WONT LEAVE MY HEAD ITS SO CATCHY!!!
Commenting on another persons comment from 9 years ago, lets see if they respond
@@ultimategarrett4606 lol I don't even remember posting this comment shit
Even 11 years and more later, this guy saved my Chemistry project
3:10 "now wake up... And smell the moles."
hi,I'm a Taiwanese student. Our science teacher played this in class, and everyone had a good time laughing.Thanks.
My chem teacher showed this during class when introducing us to moles as a number concept. I wish she played it twice. XD
same
Well now you can listen to it eighty billion times 0:00
I can't believe I just saw a Gmod video in school lol. Catchy though.
Thank you High School Chem teacher for letting us see this
Just saw this today, moles make much more sense now, and was surprised this was done in Garry's Mod. Now one of the catchiest songs I've ever heard in my life.
Teacher put this on, me and four other glorious mate knew what the intro and was just looking at each other the whole time. 11/10 learnt nothing.
Despite the extreme 2008 vibe this video gives off.
the song itself IS kinda catchy.
my chemistry teacher showed us this today and its been stuck in my head all day :P pretty sweet song
i saw this like 2 weeks ago, and this still plays in my head every single day omg
Saw in Chemistry about 1-2 weeks ago! I LOVED it!
im seeing it 6 years after u
I just saw this in Chem 1A, 15 minutes ago. It was magnificent.
I'm so glad my sister showed me this- these are some really good vibes
my high school chem teacher showed us this in class, along with some other funny chemistry videos on youtube, and 10 years later i still think of them
Ahhh, memories of this song from Chem class. -w- I miss it so much. xD
Mrs. Gore ugh had this in my head for 6 years now. Had to memorize it and sing it in front of the class... why do teachers have to torture us so much!!
The singer is my high school chemistry teacher, Michael Offutt, and is on a CD he made called Chemistry Songbag I.
It's been 10 years since my chemistry teacher showed us this song in class and it still randomly plays in my head sometimes
6 people failed chemistry class
My chem teacher showed us this last year haha i still remember it whoever came up with this song is a freaking genius !
Lyrics:
A mole is an an animal that burrows in the ground,
Or the spot on your chin that you gotta shave around.
But there's another kind of mole of interest to me,
That's the kind of mole they use in chemistry.
Chorus: A mole is a unit, or have you heard,
containing six times ten to the twenty-third,
That's a six with twenty-three zeros at the end,
Much too big a number to comprehend.
Say you had a mole of pennies to distribute 'round the world,
Give to each of the five billion grownups, boys, and girls,
There wouldn't he a single soul down and out of luck,
Cause everybody in the world would get a trillion bucks.
Or Say you had a mole of paper and stacked it toward the sky,
Paper's awful thin, but that pile would get so high,
It'd reach up into outer space, in fact I think you'd find,
It'd go up to the moon and back, eighty billion times.
Chorus
Suppose a mole of marshmallows fell upon the planet,
Over each square inch of land and sea, think that you could stand
it?That layer would be twelve miles high and of course block out the sun,
We're talking close to five million trillion tons.
Well, maybe we could save ourselves if we all started eatin',
One marshmallow each second, not two 'cause that'd be cheatin'.
With five billion people munching, how long do you think it'd take?
Forty million years and that's without a bathroom break.
Chorus
But say you had a mole of atoms, would the pile be immense,
Should I say the answer now, or leave you in suspense?
Well, atoms are so very, very small, you understand,
You could hold a mole of atoms in the palm of your hand.
So shake a little sugar in the middle of your palm
Now you don't want to spill it, so try and stay calm.
You hardly can imagine and barely realize,
There's more atoms in that sugar than stars up in the sky.
Chorus
My chemistry teacher showed it and the class literally knew it was GMOD.
My RUclips on 3DS nostaliga has taken me this far!
Just saw this in Chem 101. A round of applause from all 377 of us in the lecture hall.
my teacher played it to a sub 7 years ago and on mole day she still remembered it.
I want a mole of pennies!!!
My chemistry teacher put this in class. When I heard the TF2 Theme I shouted "Team Fortress!" then I saw Gmod, and then again "G-MOD!" ...needless to say, everyone in the class was like "...wuuut?"
Are you still like this?
I think I was the only person who had any idea what was going on...
I am a sad panda and one of few nerds in my whole school. But this seriously made my semester. TF2 theme made me surprised me, and I was like uh... then it was GMOD, I was was like YES!
This song is so catchy! We have learned it in chemistry this year. It’s crazy how it’s helped so many people for so many years.
My chemistry 11 teacher just played this in class and I enjoyed every single second of this video
Just saw this in school, i was more educated than i have ever been in any class from this video alone
Thank you so much. I first and last heard this song in jr. high science almost 10yrs ago. Brings back memories of class with my friends and crazy science teacher.
I play this in my classroom when I introduce moles
Mrs.Leonard, you will be praised for years to come.
same, my hopes were dashed when I remembered the fact of who sent it to me.
Great song. Unbebelievable, really. It just gives you an idea how incredibly small atoms are. Amazing.
Best song ever.
This is marvelous. It combines music, science and Half-Life (which I guess can be considered DOUBLE science).
One of the most clever things I've seen.
my chem student teacher uses this everyday and were not even on conversion factors anymore lmao but im addicted now cuz he plays it so much XD
Just watched this in chemistry, me and a few others freaked out about the use of Gmod
i like how it says "chem sucks" and "really boring" during the chorus hahha
catchy, i respect this.
Ok now this is epic
Our teacher showed us one version of this song but said there was a better one.
I didn't expect to see Gmod in chemistry class.
I was the only person in my class that knew that the beginning song was the TF2 theme song. And the only that knew that the actual video was made in Gmod...
My chem teacher has so many of these tunes, this one, redox, acids & bases, electron config, etc.
My chemistry teacher showed us this in class today, one of the most confusing things I’ve seen in ages
Our Chemistry Teacher did indeed show us this.
My teacher also showed this video in my class, i gotta agree it does have a catchy tune !!
Oh my, this is brings back so much memories from my wayward AP Chem days... Good times XD
Well if everyone got a trillion bucks _everyone_ would be "down and outta luck" because 1. people would be buried miserably and 2. the money would be completely devalued
my chem teacher played this song and now stuck in my head and it has been 3 days not fare..... guess i won't forget it for my test
GAHHH WHY DID MS RAMOS HAVE TO SHOW THIS TO THE CLASS?!?!?!? now i cant get it out of my head TT^TT
I just had a mini existential crisis trying to think about this
Same.. I feel like Danisnotonfire now.. (Sorry if you don't know who he is I'm just making an inside joke then haha)
I know who he is! Who doesn't? ;)
My chem teacher used this today.
I freaked out cause this was in Gmod.
I was like HOLY CRAP, IT'S GMOD
my chemistry teacher just played this for us, o can not get it out of my head i like it
My highschool chemistry teacher also showed us this. On this day of my cat's death, this is the only thing that's cheering me up rn. Thanks for ten years of earworm
My Chemistry teacher has this guy's whole CD
I am so going to show this to my classes tomorrow.
Bad news as of today the counsel of weights and measures are changing the mole...
OHMIGOSH!!! I FINALLY UNDERSTAND!!! XD THIS
SONG SAVED MY IB CHEM LIFE!!!
THANK YOU GENIUS WHOEVER WROTE THIS MAGNIFICENCE!!!!
I prefer "The Element song", but this still deserves 5 stars
my chemistry teacher played this for us this week and we loved it. Everyone almost died laughing at the man with the broken, spinning neck and his face lmbo
this song makes life worth living
Watched this today, when I heard the tf2 theme and saw gmod I was like OMG!!
My Chemistry teacher sent us all this video to watch over the summer. I wasn't too hopeful until the TF2 theme started playing. I doubt that counts as an excuse to play TF2 instead of doing work.
My school played this on our morning school's news.
The author of this song is Mike Offutt.
My chemistry teacher showed this to us today. Highlight of the hear
They literally put this video link on my powerpoint presentation for Chemistry. I have seen it all. 15 years later 😂
my teacher played this in chem, my face asploaded as soon as the tf2 theme came up
Its Michael Offutt with 2 T's btw. just so its credited correctly.
We made ice cream to celebrate mole day. we then had to convert mole's to particles. wooo for 6.022 x 10^23
My science teacher showed this in class yesterday and the people who didn't know what gmod was were freaked out when gman spun his head around at 3:10 xD
mine has both cds....and he's seen this guy at his concert....IN A LIBRARY
Yo fool totally dig these mad tunes. Keep it real.
Yo homie
@Ramirosk8er Actually it is more precise when you say 6.022x10^23. They just used 6x10^23 because it fit the beat better. Also, SigFigs are in account.
Our Chemistry teacher showed us this and I swear it's burned into our heads XD
use it all the time for teaching the mole!
Chem class was made instantly better when my teacher pulled this up, a couple years ago. Is it odd I've taken the time to memorize the song to sing along? :P
watched this in phyics today
livened up the lesson a bit
Coronavirus ROBBED me of watching this in class
My Chemistry teacher showed us this today! :D honestly love this so freaking much! :D
this was the highlight of my chemistry class yesterday!! :)
My chem teacher showed this to us today, a very very small part of my class freaked out (me and 2 of my friends) when we heard tf2
this is still being shown in school lol
