Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 - Not what I was expecting

- I had some preconceived ideas about the new Royal Enfield Shotgun based on the marketing by Royal Enfield. I had expected this bike to be some imitation American cruiser aimed purely at the hip and cool youth and believing themselves to be hip and cool, the frothy coffee brigade, though there is nothing wrong with frothy coffee.

i have a 4 year old interceptor which i 've modified and love, but this shotgun version is great,it looks so compact up close like a small tank....sturdy and solid.
Yes, exactly 😁 a real solid bike for sure 😁 thanks AF 😁
Thanks for this video. Your praise for the Shotgun 650 seems fairly guarded and certainly not effusive! But I have to say I think it's a gorgeous bike, and as you say probably the best 'finished' bike from RE so far. I can't wait to see one in the flesh, and in that colour! Cheers!
Yes, I think I need to ride it again in better conditions with a few more miles under its belt 😁 thanks Steve 😁
The Shotgun is growing on me. I agree, they should have made the clocks into the headlight nacelle.
I love the blue.
Absolutely agree 😁 thanks PW 😁
Saw it in the flesh in a Royal Shop last week. It's gorgeous... and will make a beautiful 40's birthday gift to myself. The mecanic told me that each exhaust pipe weight 10 Kg, so just by changing them you can make that beauty less heavy and more playfull. I'm really considering buying it and doing that. Thanks for the review (excuse my "french dude english").
Thanks YH 😁 yes, a very interesting bike 😁
I like the way it's beyond categorization - it's simply a no-frills, well built, practical all-purpose motorbike. I bet it'll do really well in India, Oz, and the US.
Spot on 😁 thanks D 😁 I think that’s why I think it’s the new Bullet/Classic 😁
The 650 meteor wasn't for me but there is something about the shotgun that really appeals to me, 👍
Steve, I think the shotgun is closer to the 350 meteor that you loved to ride.
Mid pegs on the Shotgun.
@@Stefan_trekkie exactly Stefan, much more "me" 👍
Yes, me too 😁 thanks ER 😁
I took a test ride of the Shotgun 650 today and rewatched this video and you were absolutely right Mr.Taym it is a Classic 650 frame and underpinning on which the Classic 650 will be built on,also notice the peashooter exhausts which are the same as the Classic 650.The engine also feels quite different from an interceptor 650 and tuned much differently feels a lot similar to a Classic 350 but in a 650 capacity more torque low down if you know what i mean.Cheers
Absolutely 😁 with a bit of chrome and wire wheels and it’s there 😁 thanks BLM😁
@TAYM Exactly Mr.Taym, looks like this was just a trailer/ teaser before the big launch. 😃
Morning Mr TAYM. It’s good that we all don’t think/like the same or the world would be a boring place. I really like the shiny casings (easy to clean, no bloody polishing the bare alloy), and even the shroud under the clocks. Like you though, I would prefer a rev counter, with maybe the tripper in between and slightly above. I think we can all agree that the Shotgun will be the basis for the Classic 650, as I mentioned in my review. Think Shotgun with bling, I think it will have forks and nacelle like the Classic 350, plus the mudguards will obviously be similar too. Now if they bring out a Classic 650, with black engine casings, but chrome exhaust, I would be tempted…….that said, RE are tempting me with everything at the moment 🤦♂️😂
I agree Ian. Tempted about a Shogun but the dials look like an afterthought. I agree chrome pipes would look good. Maybe I should hold off for the classic 650 to come out🤭
Agreed , You just described my exact wishes for a 650 Classic.👍
Sadly I bet it will come with polished alloy.🤣
I agree, the Classic 650 will be a Shotgun with shiny bits and a nacelle. Just an opinion, like.
@@LifetimeBikeragreed 😢 They are a pain to keep shiny 🙄
Absolutely 😁 thanks Ian 😁
Good name, skittles, for a bice. I love the green one. Looking as the toughest of all RE.
Still want to wait for the classic 650. Thanks taym for taking us down the road again.
Same here. Waiting to see the Classic 650 in Novenber
Definitely well built 😁 thanks Berry 😁
I agree, this is the classic 650, that loop in the frame around the side panel is a nod to the old classic. I saw a chocolate colourde meteor in Haywards this morning - lovely.
Have you seen the silver and black meteor ? 😁 absolutely stunning 😁 thanks Andy 😁
Everyone should have a Royal Enfield in their stable Mr Taym, mine is a Bullet 500 trials, I think that’s enough to slow my heart rate once in a while on a sunny summer Sunday
Absolutely 😁 thanks Vincent 😁
Traded in my Hunter 350 (which I'd had for six weeks) for a Shotgun yesterday. Love the Shotgun!
@@FattyMaxxx excellent 😁 very nice bike 🦒 thanks FM😁
I like that color...it is unusual. In this video you sounded like a skeptic who turned into...less of a skeptic! 😂👍
I think you have it about right 😁😂😂 thanks Mark 😁
My favorite color Shotgun !
Beautiful motorcycle, the best lookin Royal Enfield imo.
Thanks Mike 😁
The engine doesn't sound like its working had at all as you go through the gears and ride along the beautiful countryside. The motorcycle is lovely and an outstanding value for the money. When I look at it, I just can't find anything that isn't spot on. Someone really did their homework in its design and marketing it for people to enjoy and afford.
Thanks Vince 😁
😊 absolutely love the shotgun !!!
Suits you sir 😁😂😂 in yellow though 😁 thanks Jim 😁
Good practical review thanks Taym. I’m waiting for the Classic 650. Hoping it will have full guards, Speedo head like classic 350 and spoked wheels. Will probably be heavy but I can live with that. Would trade my classic 350 in on it.
Thanks PPP 😁 exactly 😁
Thoroughly enjoyed your video! Thanks for taking us for a spin. Love the Shotgun!
Thanks Joe 😁😂😂
I like it in the blue, & the engine finish to me harks back to a Vincent, & the big single speedo.
Thanks Baz 😁
Great review, thank you.
How does is smell again? And that blue color is ... , it's so ... so .. , it bewilders me, but in a beautiful way.
😂😂😂 all good fun 😁 thanks Uncle 😁
When i first sat on one in a dealer a few weeks back i liked the peg position as it seemed to give me more seat to peg distance, always a consideration for my long legs. But then riding it was a different story, the peg position never suited me at all. I test rode the bike for an hour and it started giving me hip pain.
Didn't like the clocks, the size, layout, and colours in them made them look cheap imo.
6K mile valve adjustment check is something to consider.
But there was a lot i liked about the bike. The way it hid its weight so well, how it handled and its engine were all good for me. The look of the bike as a whole appeals to me more than any other Royal Enfield.
Thanks Jeff 😁 yes, it’s an odd one 😁
Hi Taym, as you know I am a twin clock fan, it's all about the symmetry. A motor cycle without a rev counter, that's definitely a no no for me! Thanks
if it hasent got it it dosent need it,but thats me,still a bloody heavy lump though.
😂😂😂😂 thanks GBD 😁
Hope you got that cup of tea Taym ! ...I turn up once or twice a year at Haywards and the Kettles on (marvellous mug of tea). Love the Shotgun but holding on with anticipation for the Classic 👍
Thanks D 😁 I most certainly did, that kettles never off 😂😂😂
Nice to meet you today Mr TAYM at Haywards . keep up the good work .
Thanks Michael 😁 great to meet you too😁
The round switches must be harder to accidentally bump on. I'm always knocking mine and blinding people with high beam or panicking when it won't start because the kill switch is on. Then I feel foolish. If they can't come on accidentally, it's an improvement. Cheers.
😂😂😂😂 thanks MrMo 😁
It’s the weight, it’s the same as the big old litre bikes we used to ride in the 70s and 80s. I can’t lug that weight around the garage anymore and l’m sure it’s not just me. How did you find moving it around TAYM?
yep its not just you,i can ride them but getting out of the garage and going back in,its the weight for me.when i see people pushing big bikes forward and back wards glad its not me.
It’s definitely heavy, even if it holds it well😕 as a tall person, when weight is low down and the bike isn’t particularly tall it can still be an issue moving around 😁 thanks Chris 😁
I must admit that my first thought on seeing you astride the Shotgun was 'I'd rather be on the Harley 883R just in front' which despite the primitive mechanicals oozes cool that the Shotgun doesn't.
Yes, you might be right but this feels more Classic than cruiser I think 😁 thanks CMD 😁
Morning TAYM
I’m not convinced yet with this look but it’s probably a grower… not liking the rear mudguard or the headlamp.
I hope the classic 650 is a 350 grown up with classic looks myself without the modern touch 😊😊
Great review TAYM
Phil
Yes, it’s got potential, which I guess is not the praise RE were looking for with their flagship bike 🤔 we will see 😁 thanks Phil 😁
Morning TAYM, it's a cracking bike isn't it?, on the point with the weight, when I got back to the shop he said what did I think weight wise, and I said you know what I never even thought about it or noticed it! And for a 240kg bike that's weird how it doesn't feel anything like that weight! And I'm a 75kg 5' 6" shortarse! 😅😅 my favourite colour is the Drill green one in that colour it really is reminiscent of the Classic 350 ,
Cheers Mel 🍻
I was surprised how light it felt too. Didn't test ride it but wanted to.
Also a 5'6" 11st shortass.
Thanks Mel 😁 very interesting 😁
Great review, m8. It would be interesting to see it with the classic rear guard and the classic single speedo and head unit.
How did you go get bike today?
Must of been stoked it's a great feeling getting a new bike.I was out today on a Anzac Run was a great turnout & wasn't cold 🥶 like most Anzac Rides.Had Run today as Anzac is on Thursday coming.
Wait for classic 650.. its only few months away😂
Bloody cold on the way down to do the swap but a great ride home. Love it. Just pulls and that's keeping it under 4000 rpm while it's doing the run-in. Brilliant. Love it, thanks RR
@@iantownsend17 Need heated gloves done there.I was on the road early yesterday but was ok alot colder in previous years & 2yrs ago Anzac Run was a frosty morning🥶.
My new gloves are heaps better.
Must of had big Grin on face on way home, good feeling getting a new bike.
For sure m8
Great review taym I like this bike if I had room in my garage for another bike I would consider this one
Thanks AB 😁
Holding out hopes for a Classic 650! But that is so nearly there!!👍👍
Nice looking bike, not sure about RE's I will have to find my nearest dealer and arrange a test ride on a couple to see if they are for me I guess.
Worth giving a go 😁 thanks Steve 😁
It looks like a stocking full of that stuff a bitza lol, can’t get my head round the trend for offset dials as on the moto guzzi range etc. I think a proper modern retro is required a royal Enfield Constellation perhaps using the same engine but let’s have some chrome and stainless steel and a classic gold lined paint job and no tacky graphics.
Yes, I think RE seem to be moving away from their roots 🤔 thanks Bill😁
That is happening with all REs, mr. TAYM .. When they start to release pics and info on a new model, we all are not sure about it. But when you see it, sit and try it, we are all hooked by then. Don't know how they do it but sure they listen to what people want. Honda use to be like that decades ago, now they do very conservative bikes.
Don't worry. Honda has started making bikes that seem to be made to compete against the REs. Their new 350 classic competitors and also the proposed design of a new 350 adv that's almost stenciled off of the old 411 Himalayan.
@@hop-skip-ouch8798 They don't import their cb350 to Europe, also few other bikes that I have interest in are not imported too.
@@Stefan_trekkie Weird choice.
I really hope Honda just starts making a few retro bikes. I have been pretty disappointed in the build quality of my Himalayan and I'm not buying another Enfield for it to drop 50% of its value in 2 years...but if Honda put one of its 750 parallel twins in a 70s looking bike I'd be all over it.
@@Geshmaal The 411 Himy dropped because the anticipation of the 452, which is seams to be better bike. I had Classic 350, superb bike but let it go because of a back problems. The new naked Japanese bikes look horrible, including the Hornet. I very much wanted to try and buy the ADV 160 Honda, but is only in Asia and Americas .. The 350 is a bit heavy for my style of riding.
Spot on I think it’s a classic forerunner, a few little changes to mudguards and a bit more chrome with different clocks and you are just about there. ( Love the lard arse comment )
I agree with your thoughts . Could be worth the wait for the Classic
Absolutely 😁 just needs kinder rear suspension I think 😁 thanks Andrew 😁
@TAYM great to see you out on a Shotgun . RE keeps on tempting us... maybe I will wait for the classic 650 but will be kean to take one out. We have just been told RE Australia and NZ have an update coming soon when the Shotgun is getting here.....
I got a email from RE on Thursday taking Registrations to test ride the Shotgun.
@@ruahinesrider is that All Roads ?
@@hughgardiner2247 What's All Roads mean?
@@ruahinesrider thought your email might have been from Palmy RE dealer All Road Adventures
@@hughgardiner2247 It said RE NZ 🇳🇿.There was a RE Dealership in Hawkes Bay but went bust I think 🤔.Have to go to Palmy now or Erickson Honda in Bay View.I live about 10km closer to Palmy. If I was to go for a Test ride it would be in Palmy.I wanted to test the new Triumph Scrambler 400x last time at Palmy Triumph but they sold them all.
Well that's another potential bike for the stable Mr TAYM, you're going to need to sell the house and buy a dealership soon to accommodate them. I do like the style of the shotgun especially that rear sub frame with the pop off seat and rack. Like you the clocks and light surround are a bit odd but it doesn't look bad from the side. It still might take me a few years before I'm willing to give up on power and downsize. I had my daughter on the back of Black Beauty yesterday, those four vehicle overtakes without having any doubt are so addictive 😊😂😂
I know exactly what you mean 😁 thanks Michael 😁
I suspect this would make a superb winter bike!😊
Me too 😁 thanks Steven 😁
Saw the grey one at our local dealer last Saturday. Looks great. It's also the cheapest too. Feels lighter than the SM when aboard - probably due to the mid pegs 🤔. I'd have one but Mrs PGB tried the pillion seat and it was a firm "No". Narrower and thinner than the Classic 350. She's been spoiled 😊
😂😂😂😂 well I don’t blame her, it’s a bit of foam on a rack 😂😂 thanks PGB 😁
@@TAYM 🤣😂🤣 "Foam on a rack" - perfect description. With a keyhole 😂
@@PhilipBallGarry 😂😂😂
Mr TAYM i spent all my working life in engineering and i just cant get my head around offset clocks,i suppose im just an old fashioned git who likes symmetry.🙃.
I know exactly what you mean 😁it plays havoc with my autism 😁 thanks C 😁
For me matt black engine casings would look better and I much prefer separate a speedo and rev counter. 240kg seems really heavy compared to my old interceptor but the build quality is a step up.
Yes, I agree 😁 thanks SB 😁
My Yamaha Warrior is about 300kg. She can be a real handful to move around in the gravel driveway. 240 seems like a svelte little thing, until I remember the power difference!
@@notreallydaedalus brilliant 😂😂😂 thanks Not Really 😁
Morning Taym 😊 Frothy Coffee and jukeboxes, yes, that's me 😅 650 Classic or Bullet 🤔 It needs Tiger eyes 😊
😂😂😂😂 thanks AR 😁 thought so 😁
Morning Mr Taym, nice looking bike, chrome pipes would be good. I'll stick with my meteor 650. Have a great weekend. Chris.
Absolutely agree 😁 thanks CY😁
I really hope RE make a 650 hunter ❤
I think a 450 Hunter or Scram will be on the cards for next year 😊
450 guerilla coming end of this year
Yes, lighter and more nimble, a sort of speed twin 😁
There seemed to be a distinct lack of enthusiasm for this one lol. I must admit 47 bhp and 240kg is not a major recipe for success!! This type of bike with that weight is better as a relaxed cruiser.
Thanks Steven 😁 yes, the weather was foul and I was sceptical 😂😂😂
Great review... I actually prefer the look of it with the pillion seat on and not too keen on the gloss black engine casing , I think it's definitely targeted at the "younger, trendy, frothy coffee rider" but just like the bullet 350 I'm warming to it.
The cuppa tea 🍵 riding rider will have Classic 650🤣soon & be similar to this but shiny metal engine casings & alot more shiny parts & 500 style Lascelle headlight bucket.
I saw video of one out & about in India on test ride so if got test bikes should be in the works.
There is hidden hamster compartment under the seat .
Useful for those long rides when frothy coffee is just not enough .
I know exactly what you mean 🤔 it’s on a low heat 😂😂 thanks Willie 😁
😂😂😂😂
Quite like the style of this, colour is fine, tank graphics, not so, make it look a bit cheap in my opinion.
No, don’t like the graphics at all 😁 ok if you are twelve but to me cheapen it😁 thanks Martin 😁
Love the Blue Paint Job. Twins will
Vibrate it's in their Nature
Time for a Naughty Boy Bike Test Soon
Hoodlum TAYM?
😂😂😂 thanks Jeff 😁 just around the corner 😁
I rejected the Interceptor because of its weight being high up and this is even heavier. Very difficult to manoeuvre when pushing the bike around garage and parking spaces.
No thanks.
Thanks B 😁
Morning,i think your going to get even busier demoing new RE bike's! The scram 440 is meant to be released soon, this is using the old air cooled engine bored out for a bit more power 🙂,and the guerilla 450 is another, this is to directly compete with the triumph speed 400,so that will be another interesting one 🙂. The trouble is you just make your mind up what you want and then you hear of another you might like more 😅.
That is exactly the problem 😁😂😂😂 thanks B 😁
I'm disappointed it doesn't have the chrome spoked rims, a chrome and aluminium engine and exhaust option like my Classic 500.
To spend 12,000 Aud for a bike I'm not 100 percent happy with won't be happening.
I think you might be right 😁 thanks S 😁
The best RE yet.
Yes, thanks TT 😁
For me, the instrument cluster is totally unresolved; it's almost as if RE's 1st-year apprentice threw them at the drawing and then they put them on the bike where they landed. There is zero symmetry and unfortunately it's not confined just to the Shotgun. It's a area in which RE needs to significantly improve their game.
I can’t disagree 😁 thanks Chris 😁
Morning TAYM unfortunately this is a bike I’m not interested in so I’m here just for you 😜 I’ll keep my Moto GuzziV7 850 special thanks 👍🏻 carry on that man Caio for now tat ta 👍🏻
Thanks HN 😁
I wonder though if the Super Meteor touring full seat would fit this bike as it is based around it
Thanks M 🤔 possibly not because of the rear rack 🤔
If RE did some more design flair on their dashboards I could be interested but think the clocks look just awful. We are all different eh
Not on this one, I am with you 😁 thanks volt 😁
Ay up TAYM firstly free the cone you must scale that gate and get cone back where he belongs pls he must be desperate to see the bikes instead of watch stuff grow in the field 😉.I quite like the Shot Gun actually I think probably more than the Super different shocks and change those torpedo silencers and it's all good ,engine cases probably better matt since the downpipes are matt but nice all the same . Cool bike👌👍
😂😂😂 thanks Crumb 😁 definitely too quiet 😁
Nice looking bike looks much bigger motor wise than it is maybe should have left 650 decal off the tank...bit heavy tho...I always thought Lada should have made a RS (Rally Sport) model.😊 Thanks TAYM.
Want a Lada Sport Dain 🌲 tree get a Fiat 124 I think 🤔 the model is.Lada originally made in Italy by Fiat but with different slower motor.Later they beefed up suspension to Russian winters & production went to Russia.Maybe they should of named it the Lada
Divye(Hurry)🤣.
I think they did didn’t they 🤔
Oh yeah the did...it was called the LardaRS(e)...e for electric.
@@TAYM What originally made in Italy then moved to Russia or it was called the Lada Divye(Hurry)🤣.
The Lada 4WD was actually quite good & have cult following.Mates Dad had one back in the early 1980's & was very capable 4WD.I guess the small size & lower weight helped it & was great for driving over sand dunes & farm land.

What is your opinion between this and the Interceptor ride wise? I like the look of the interceptor, but don't care for the seat or footpeg position. We don't have one of these at our local dealer yet.
This is a lot more like sitting on the Classic I think 😁 the seat to pegs on the interceptor is just a fraction too short for me but on the continental (which pegs are further back) fits like a glove 😁
I reeeeaaally like the look of the Shotgun but I HATE that analoge/digital clock. Even more when that little Tripper dodad is besides it. I just think it looks weird with two clocks with different sizes and off-centre.
Yes, they could easily done better 😁 thanks M😁
Did you find that seat comfy when riding TAYM? I sat on one at my local dealers and found it like sitting on a plank but that doesn't always translate when actually riding a bike. As a short arse I also found it to be not as approachable as I thought it would be because although the seat is low it is very very wide so you end up splaying your legs more so I couldn't quite get my feet flat on it and with the weight of it I didn't find it particularly nice to sit on.
For me it’s better than the Super Meteor but I still think the angle of the rear suspension makes the ride less comfortable than it could be 😁 thanks Mike 😁
I would definitely have it with the single seat and do they do it in black ? Thanks TAYM
Thanks GCK 😁 not in black yet 😁
👍👍🏍
Thanks Paul 😁
Another nice bike from Royal Enfield but can’t say I like the graphics. Not so keen on the engine graphic but the shot gun looks like an aftermarket attempt. The whole side would look better just plain with just the 650 on the tank, just a personal view I know.

Looks better with one seat & rear rack & actually looks really good lime that. Also being a RE be a plethora of aftermarket parts.
The Classic 650 is coming & this bike be it's base & have long rear bumper like you said & shiny alloy engine casings like Interceptor but more & 500 style Lascelle so look cosmetically different & old school & probably explains the shiny black engine casings on Super Meteor.
There was a 350Classic & a Super Meteor 650 on the Anzac Run today same colour scheme as ABD's bike in Ausie.
Super Meteor is $12500nz & I got a email yesterday from RE for test rides on the Shotgun soon.
