  • Rational emotive behaviour therapy is used as a philosophy of life and as a therapeutic approach to resolve mental health conflicts throughout the world. Humans by nature have a tendency to blame external factors for their problems. It could range from a situation which has happened in a certain way unlike their liking or a behaviour of a significant loved one. Since we assume that the triggers are responsible for my distress that I am experiencing, we are in false assumptions that once the triggers change the way I want, my emotional difficulties will fade away automatically. As we are dependent on triggers to change, our distress continues per se as we do not take any steps to work on solutions to reduce it. According to REBT our cognition, emotions and behaviour are connected. REBT philosophy advocates that majority of our distress comes from our way of looking at these emotional challenging triggers (in other words our belief system), our perceptions that we hold. In upcoming series, Dr Swaroop Bhatankar Niwal consultant psychiatrist at IPH is having a conversation with Dr Anand Nadkarni sir about this novel technique and its application.
