The blue on fascia is genious. It keeps your eye on the lower level and when looking at the upper level, my eye isnt drawn to the fascia but the scenery and trains.
Yes, it seems like you got quite a bit done. My excuse for not getting more fone on my layout is that I am sitting here watching you work on yours!😄 By now, you know that I have lots of opinions. Dascia color - it's YOUR layout, pick one that pleases you! In my visits, video viewing and reading magazine layout tours, most people tend to use a dark color on BOTH levels of their layout. I think it helps the illusion that the scenes are "miles apart" not "stacked". See what your operating crew has to say, they can see the layout in person and render a better opinion. You could even paint some sections in different colors as test displays for the voting. Wheels and trucks - first I am sorry to hear about the Rapido cars, not only for your sake but because I have a dozen waiting to be put into service. I love the "truck tool"! I have had a couple for many years and they have helped a number of plastic trucks for me. My personal favorite is Intermountain (or Tangent) wheels in Accurail trucks . One option (although kind of wasteful) is to retruck the cars. I had to do this with my first batch of BNSF "Earthworm" hoppers from LBF many years ago. They had HORRIBLE trucks and wheels, but I spent the money to put Accurail trucks and IM wheels under them and I have not had any truck-related problems and they roll faster than a little fox running from a forest fire. That option could keep those nicely detailed Rapido hoppers in service. I'm glad you had good results from adding graphite to the journals. I have had mixed results with that, but I won't critsize success.
Great progress on scenery, as for the Rapido freight cars, you may want to contact Rapido if you haven't already tried that. A few years ago when they released the first run of New Haven passenger cars they had the same problem with the trucks not being free rolling, they corrected the problem with new trucks and wheels. I had 5 of their first run of RS11, the motors drew to much amps ,as result would croak our circuit breakers. Rapido replaced all of the motors for me. The warranty service was excellent. The amount of cars you have represents a sizable investment, can't hurt to contact them. Hope it works out for you. By the way I believe that powder your using is conductive.
They added lubrication to the axle points, which only lasted for a few hours of operation. So, it is obvious that they knew of the issue. I really don't feel like spending any time with them. I doubt they would send me 118 trucks with wheelsets. Even if they did, they probably would not be any better than what's on the cars now. My plan is to just not buy any more of their cars in the future.
Daryl...the issue of the slow moving freight cars. I used the same tool to bore out the axles (slow and tedious) and replaced all of the wheels with Intermountain wheel sets. If I'm not mistaken...the axles are thinner and roll better within the axle cavity of the truck. On your coal train...you might want to put the DPU somewhere in the middle of the train. 🐪
I’d either split the facia between blue and your desert color or just paint it all a darker color. Since modifying the trucks didn’t help, I’d swap out wheels. I’ve had luck with that. Nice work on the layout!! Very impressive!!
I’d suggest black or something dark for the second level fascia. Maybe green? I have a couple of Rapido cars myself, and my biggest complaint is how light they are. Need to open up boxcars and add weight. Have yet to attempt to run them on a rr. Scenery on the second level looks great. Keep up the great work
Great looking progress, I've painted mine black, you would be surprised that it really doesn't attract your sight as you might think it would. By the way, if you were to guesstimate , how many feet of track do you have total? Not just main track, everything
I have found that Woodland Scenic static grass is thicker than the grass provided by other manufacturers - I mainly use WWS, from the UK, and miniNatur, from Germany. The thinner grasses seem to stand up better than Woodland Scenic - the applicator seems to pass on a better charge to the grass and this helps them to stand up. I also find that rather than mix the grass in the applicator, it is better to just dab small lots of glue (I use a 50/50 mix of matt medium and water) applied with an old brush, then apply one grass. Leave for a couple of hours to dry, then apply more dabs of glue and apply a different grass. Also consider mixing the length of the grass - apply the initial two layers of 2mm grass, then apply a darker 4mm or even 6mm grass in smaller dabs. This gives a more varied appearance in both colour and height and looks much more realistic. Finally, I vacuum my grass almost as soon as I have applied each layer. The vacuum also helps the grass to stand up.
@@EvanstonSub I saw a layout the other day that also had I 3” black strip sound top of backdrop. Was very impressive. I will try to find and send to you.
I just measured some wheels and the Rapido axles are longer than Intermountain, gauge was ok on both. I've found that trucks with longer axles need to be squeezed when you use the truing tool or it doesn't cut into the side frames.
Go traditional black for the valance, can't go wrong with black. I also agree that Rapidos quality has gone downhill over past 5 or so years. As for static grass, you need to mix tones, and you need a strong homemade or store bought applicator to make it stand out.
One thought about the backdrop - even a thin line (1/2" maybe) would provide an edge to the next level. I'd try that. Particularly if it is a dark color - dark charcoal, dark navy, or black would be my thought.
Before you rake Rapido over the coals, make sure you contact them about your issues. You're probably not the only person with quality issues, but likely the only one who has a large YT channel and a sizeable audience (whom I'd wager also have some Rapido rolling stock) who has visibly documented an issue with their stock. Worse case scenario: work through Lombard Hobbies to contact the manufacturer and get a resolution from them. But on topic: the layout looks great and that small slice of scenery works really well on that narrow space.
Grey or black fascia will give better framing of scene for both upper and lower, with an angle to tie in the peninsula or a same width banner along the whole top edge of backdrop.
Have you considered possible splitting the color of the fascia? Doing the bottom half sky blue and the top half some other color, either your desert sand or a black or brown. I know it would be quite a bit of work but could help blend the top and bottom and get the best for both levels.
Great railroad and video. You mentioned after cleaning the track you put some "oil" on the track. What brand or source and type for this oil and why do you put it on the track?
Same issue on the Rapido N Scale cars I purchased this year I found taking out the wheels and lightly spreading the trucks outwards fixed the issue. The plastic they use is harder than normal and tends to shrink after production. It worked on these cars. Might be worth a try. I agree they are problematic though.
You might want to try an HB pencil for your graphite source. Take the wheels off the trucks and scribble the inside of the truck with the pencil. I was more disappointed with the lack of end details on the Rapido Husky Stacks.
Those Rapido cars not only don’t allow the trains to go up your hills…they’re going to cause extra gear wear on your locomotives. Not good! I think the fascia looks good blue. Good job with the scenery!
Good evening Darrell I like your backdrop the way you have it painted blue. I see what you say that it looks like the train is floating in the air. Wonder if you could try painting the upper level about an inch or so down from your scenery your desert sand, or green to see if that might break it up . To keep the upper level from looking like the trains is floating .just a thought. Roy.
Hi Daryl, What an innovative idea re the blue fascia to blend in with the sky below 👍 As at least one person has already said maybe you could paint the bottom half blu, and then I like the idea of, perhaps, the top half black and see how that goes - that can make the top of the fascia disappear (like other folk have also said) ? Heck, it's just paint - so not so difficult to lark about 🙂 Bad news re the Rapido cars - what have Jason Shron and his colleagues got to say about that ? No exp. yet with static grass. Do you have more hours in your days than we have in Scotland ?
The idea of telephone is great. The fascia - maybe change to dark green to show a different between scenes. An I like the different in ground covers too. I would like to know what happens to the graphite on the wheelsets. Keep the great work and info.
Fascia needs to be a darker color as suggested. The upper level is a different scene from the lower level. I think once the lower level has scenery the darker color facia will not be noticeable.
Hi Daryl , I would try painting a piece of 2 foot wallboard in sand color and just dab some greenery on it so it matches your backdrop and then clamp it to your fascia, take a step back and see if it would blend in.
@@EvanstonSub I meant to tell you to use a small round brush and make sure you dunk it in water. I typically use acrylic paints a mixture of black and yellow, for darker green use more black and lighter greenery use more yellow.
I hear you on the wheels rolling. I have Walthers heavyweight passenger car that will just sit on a 2% grade. I have a BLI steamer that can pull 50 freight cars, but can only pull 5 of those passenger cars. Seems like the price we pay, they should roll better.
Applying graphite to the wheel bearings might be better done with an Exacto knife tip. Turn the truck over so you are dumping the graphite down into the bearing rather than pouring it onto the wheel face.
I'm surprised that Rapido cars don't roll freely. I model in Sn3 so I might suggest replacing the wheels or all new trucks. Either way it is going to be expensive. I think the facia needs to be a dark color. It's your railroad so do what you like. Everything is looking good !
Could you maybe split the fascia paint. Doesn’t have to be 50/50 but enough to give the second level the appearance of being on the ground and not in the air.
I would do the fascia board in one or the other thoughts; One you could paint the fascia board in both the blue and sand color with a thin red line like a sill stripe? Second do UP yellow with a red sill stripe or Yellow sill stripe? Just a thought.

Theater tells us that what the eye should not see you paint black. Black also makes the other colours more intense and 3D looking.
I am reminded of the wisdom of the ancients (I think it was Mick Jagger) who said "Paint it black".
Interesting idea. Thanks I'm going to give black a try.

Excellent!
I'd use the sand color on the fascia... or maybe eggshell. Also, I think scrubby trees work better with that desert-y backdrop.
Thanks. I may put a 1/2 inch desert sand stripe on the top of the facia.
Intermountain wheel sets are the best
That may end up being the solution
I like hunter green that way it blends with grass.

Facia: blue looks fine.
Rapido wagons: I am shocked. They are great in UK!
I saw your video. On my well cars, the wheels roll well when the car is upside down, but terrible when on the track. Go figure

Another week, another good video, and how bout those Chiefs! Maybe paint the fascia red and gold? 😜
Chiefs rule. Red and gold would be awesome!
The photo backdrop at the peru site is astonishing, ivr tried painting it but not near as good
Photos are a great way to go

I had no trouble getting the WS to stand up. Color blending was the issue.
I like the blue. I have brown wood panel. Do what you like.
that's eventually the plan

Yes, but very expensive since I have a lot of the cars.
Here I was thinking I was the only one with this issue. Awesome fix but I'm slowly selling off my Rapidos
I might do that once athearn comes out with their RD4s
I like it.

Two tone facia on the upper level, half sand color and half blue.
Check out tomorrow's update.
For the facia I would use a light green, for the Rapido cars graphite is goo and last long enough
Thanks for the ideas
Looks great! On the next section, could you show how to apply the scenery? Do you use an adhesive when you place the dirt, scrubs and grasses?
Ok and sometimes :)
Ringing endorsement for rapido well cars 😂😂😂
I know, right!

Try adding some white to it doing some clouds they'll blend in better

Probably going to have to replace all the wheels maybe be expensive but probably the only way to bypass the graphite every few months
I'm afraid you are correct
What about a dark green fascia?
Nah
Sand color didn't look bad?
I may have given up on it too soon.
If that axle cleaning tool won't help them roll, something is really wrong!! I use that thing on all my cars.
yep
Back in he day when i was in a train club we did use graphite on slow rolling cars as far as your fashia,Hummmm?
I got this feeling the graphite will not last very long.
be better off just replacing the wheels. I would change the facia to a tan color, your sky is blue ground level should be a ground color.
