  • I have had several people asking how I made my magnetic walking sticks and so I thought I would do a short video to show them how I do it. This is part of a bigger project I am working on and when I get some more research done I will make a better video.
    Gold is usually accompanied by black sand and magnetite and my question was, If I found a heavy concentration of magnetite would gold be in the same area? So I built these hiking/walking sticks to check out material as I am hiking and checking out new areas to prospect. So far I have found a number of streams that looked very promising but I found no magnetite and no gold as well. When I did find good concentrations of magnetite I found gold about 60% of the time. It has been an interesting project but I'm still doing a lot more research on it to see how feasible it is.

      You use this stick to probe streams or areas you think there might be gold. I use the long one to probe further out in streams under rocks to find the highest concentrations of black sand and then suck them up with my hand dredge. If you find a heavy concentration then there is a good possibility of gold. No black sand no gold.

    Thanks for another nice tutorial LS. This was sure a quick easy one! I could have used this probe on my recent trip but made use of a magnetic pickup tool I had here at home. I found very little black sand in Fairview canyon so I didn't try there but brought home some cons from the fish lake area. I need my classifiers to arrive to get it down to a nice size for the miller table but what I've panned down and run isn't showing anything but a bit of pyrite. I built your hand suction dredge tool and can't wait to get out and try it. Winter will be here before we know it so I guess I better not wait too long! Hope you're having a great day and happy prospecting!

      Thank you for taking the time to watch it. I’m glad you made the trip ok. I find my walking stick is very handy when out looking for gold as it narrows down the search areas considerably. With its help I don’t waste as much time on unproductive dirt as I used to do. EBay has some n52 3/4”x3/4” rare earth magnets that work very well in it. Very strong. I also like to carry one of those small hand cultivators to break up hard packed areas and get to the deeper areas to check for the black sand.
      Yep, your classifiers are very handy to have. The minus 30 mesh material is what I spend my time on. That is where you will find the most and many times the only gold.
      The hand dredge will come in handy in the wintertime as it lets you reach out into a steam and collect material without having to get in the water. I have a 5’ version I use for winter. I also like a 45 degree elbow on the end. You rotate the tube so the elbow is down in the sand and then pull back on the handle and as you get close to the end of the stroke, you rotate the tube so the mouth points up preventing your material from dropping out. You can really pick up a lot of material with one of those.
      I am just finishing up my latest Miller Table. I’ll be running tests on it next week. It’s going to be more for working more material at a time. Should be interesting.
      The new highbanker is working like I had hoped. No gold loss so far and no having to prescreen the material. Too bad I can’t post pics here. May get videos out on them later on. Hope you can get out while the weather stays good and get some shiny.👍

      @@utahavalanch The hand cultivator sounds like a great idea. I'll have to take one along on my next outing. I grabbed 6 of the rare earth magnets at Homie D and those are doing a great job. I built a pitched roof on my house this past year and just did a go-round with the probe and found nearly 40 old nails and screws in the dirt and pea gravel around the house! That'll save me a sore foot later when I'm out walking barefoot and save me another tetanus shot : ))
      The highbanker sounds interesting! I hope you can get a video out on it later if you're feeling up to it. Not having to prescreen sounds like it'll save you a ton of time! I was looking at Keene's latest sluice upgrade that uses perforated metal over the sluice and keeps the bigger rocks from accumulating in the sluice. Amazon has perforated steel sheet with 1/4" holes, so I'll probably do the same to my mini sluice to eliminate having to prescreen as well.
      Enjoy this great fall weather LS. It would be great if you could get out with your grandson for a nice afternoon the weather being so nice. Stay safe and happy prospecting!

      Yes, isn't it amazing all the little nasties you find in your grass with one of those. :-) I found hundreds in mine after 2 roof jobs and an add on to the back of the house.
      That screen on the sluice will work very well for you. Just be sure you have a bit of space between the bottom of the screen and the top of the mat so the water can clean the light material out of the mat
      I bought 2 bags of Goldbay Snake River Paydirt to run through the Highbanker. There is 1 gram of small gold in 3 lbs of dirt in each bag. The Highbanker is a deep well sluice with a hopper on top. I ran the bags and got nice clean +8 rocks to pick through on the screen for nuggets and gems and 90% of the gold was caught in the top deep well and the rest was in the top 3 troughs of the lower mat. Only 2 micro pieces you had to use a 40X loupe to see in the tailings. Love it.
      If you get out and about enjoying the autumn leaves. Take your walking stick/probe and check out all the dirt you run across. If you go down some old gravel topped roads, try pulling off and check the gravel on the side and see what you come up with. Check around and inside pot holes in the road and see what you come up with. It may amaze you how much black sand and gold is all around us. Have a Great fall and get some nice shiny before snow falls. Yup, gonna take the grandkid out myself.

      Thanks for taking the time to watch Chuck. This walking stick has really helped me find a lot more gold. If you saw my video on the hand dredge, I now have a cap I can put over the end of the tube and a 148 lb lift magnet I can swap with the leather cup..I can now do black sand fishing in a stream and pull out large amounts of black sand at a time. A lot of gold gets trapped and comes up with it. I can crush the magnetite and release the gold still in it. I'm always surprised at the gold it contains.

      It has really worked well for me whether it's a stream, gutter, gravel on the side of the road or just a hiking trail. If you get enough sand to cover the head of the probe, that's where you want to dig. "Gold always rides an iron horse" (black sand). Check the lake beach sands in your area. Thanks for watching.

      Hi Jay. Yep, the knees are mainly why I made it as well. 😄
      But I find it helps me to locate pockets of gold and I collect all the black sand I can while I'm out walking and put it in ziploc bags. During the winter I crush it and recover the gold locked up in them. There is a bit of gold in them.

      Thanks for watching Kevin. You can buy the magnets on Ebay. Do a search for Neodymium Disc Magnets 20mm x 3mm or preferably 4mm. You can usually buy these in groups of 10 which is what I use in this staff and walking stick. If you also want to make my smaller black sand magnet you will have to use one of the 10 or pick up another 10. If you buy them from China you can get them for a really good price but it will take about a month to get to you. Home Depot sometimes has these as well but they aren't as strong.

      Thanks, I think you will really like the miller table. If you build the Melamine shelf table, be sure to really seal the edges and if you do a gold vial hole seal the edges where the plasic covering meets the wood with Titebond III glue and then paint with several coats of paint or spar varnish. That is a weak point that will fail if you don't. The cutting board tables you won't have to worry about. Golden Pans to you as well.

    Once again nice video, what are the size of these?

    • @utahavalanch

      Michael Johnson
      Hi Michael. The shaft of the walking stick is made out of 3/4" PVC and is 3 feet long. I can use the same magnets for both. The longer staff is also 3/4" PVC and is 5 feet long. I just made an upgrade to the walking stick yesterday. I took a 1/4" x 3 foot steel threaded rod and put a nut on the the end of it. Then the magnets would stick to the end of the rod. I then stacked enough magnets on the end so that the rod extended out of the shaft enough for me to grab it but still be able to put the handle back on.
      I found that if you get into a heavy concentration of black sand you can't break the magnets loose down in the nose and so now with the rod I can pull the magnets free and let the black sand fall into my bucket easily. I use these a lot to help me find gold as gold is found with black sand and the bigger the pocket of black sand, the better the chance of gold. We went to dinner last night and I saw a nice pile of sand along the edge of the parking lot. I took my walking stick over and tested it and got a very nice amount of black sand. I gathered a 1 gallon sample and came home and panned it and got a little more fine gold to add to the collection. I think we will go back for some more dinner and gold again one of these evenings.

      @@utahavalanchThanks again for the info and I was also thinking of insert a long rod inside to make it easier to remove the black sand. What is the dia and thickness of the magnets?

    • @utahavalanch
      @utahavalanch  5 лет назад

      Michael Johnson
      The magnets are 3/4" in diameter. There are also 20mm which are the same size in metric. You can find them in all different thicknesses from 1/8" up to 1". I just ordered a 3/4" x 1" and I'll stack some 1/8" on top of that to bring the rod up to where I can just fit the handle on. I ordered in a lot of the thin 3/4" to use in my short hand magnets that I use for panning and sluicing. They have some 3/4" x 1/4" and 1/2" that look interesting as well. They didn't have these when I made my video. They are different strengths and have a power number on them. You will find N48 which is a weaker strength and I recommend the N52 which is a little more money but much stronger. A 1" x 1/4" that I just bought to make a larger one will lift 28 lbs. turned out my 3/4" walking stick was just as good if not a little better.

      Sounds good. It helps to be able to find the most likely spot to dig with the black sand and then pan test pans to be sure. When you find the gold then you will know where to concentrate your efforts. Best of Luck and happy 4th to you as well.

    Does all gold stick to black sand? Is all black sand iron? (Magnaite) stuff.

    • @utahavalanch
      @utahavalanch  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Roger. Gold doesn't stick to the black sand but black sand, mostly Magnatite and Hematite are usually mixed together in a matrix such as quartz and so when the quartz weathers away, so does the gold and black sands. So if you find a good concentration of black sands there is a good chance there will be gold as well as they are close in weight and so will travel together. I have found that if there is very little black sand, there will usually not be any gold.
      Magnatite is mostly iron but I'm not sure on the Hematite. It does react to a strong rare earth magnet so there may be some iron in it.

    What is special about Rare Earth Magnet. Is it something special?

    • @utahavalanch
      @utahavalanch  6 лет назад

      Rare Earth Magnets or Neodymium magnets are some of the strongest magnets currently made and are a lot stronger than the usual magnets you are used to. They can be purchased on Ebay or in your local Home Depot stores. They come in a variety of sizes. If you have watched my Black sand magnet video, it will show you how to make a small hand magnet for cleaning out Magnetite from sand for panning. I also use it to help me find black sand deposits when I am out prospecting and want a small hand unit instead of my walking stick. The same set of magnets can be used in the walking stick, the staff and the hand magnet. I usually use 4 - 3/4" magnets for these.
