People who compare the two should know that whenever you do that it's like comparing apples and oranges...let me ask you how good you yourself sing?....how much have your researched or know the background of these two singers, in terms of the way they trained their voices to this extent...someone who has tried to imitate and understand the difference in their singing, would agree that both were unique identities and each had his own masterpiece..Kishore was unique in certain ways...he was no way inferior...comparison is not always in a good-better-best terms...he trained himself without taking formal singing lessons and won the hearts of people around the world and there is rare talent as such in the world...he was preferred singer by RD Burman and new age musicians like Rajesh Roshan because of the freshness in his voice and style would satisfy the imaginations of these new age music composer/directors etc...if those people would not compare these two then who the hell you are on this earth..It is not either this or that...It is Rafi Sahab AND Kishore Da both have to be there for your entertainment... Kishore was a master of unique style and the way he could communicate his emotions that you can feel for sure through his songs was way beyond the imaginations of even classically trained singers...what if he was not Indian classically trained? just like a child learn to speak or do anything through the power of imitation and not by going to schools..school can limit their creativity in most cases...even more important to talk about is his courage, passion and the creativity for the singing that helped him outperform even the classically trained singers of those times and made him so commercially successful... who would dare to yodel like kishore da?...I myself a big fan of RAFI sahab..he is the GURU i learn from through his skillful unmatched art, when it comes to singing technique..Yes Rafi is the teacher you go to..but Kishore da was my first love..i fell in love with music only cos of kishore da's emotionally moving and mesmerizing singing...When I get bored with kishore's songs...YES i do....i go back to Rafi songs...Rafi sahab's got the right training since his childhood and he mastered the right technique and a unique style however kishore da trained himself to sing just by the power of imitation..he trained himself not just to sing and, yodel only (he learned the art of yodeling just by listening to an Austrian singer's yodeling on the record player), but to act, paint, compose music, direct movies, write songs and that is all through the power of imitation and creativity and most importantly the COURAGE and confidence to bring that out to the world.. when rafi sahab passed away.. kishore was the one who cried... Rafi sahab gave Amit kumar the kishore's son, blessings on his first stage performance..Rafi n kishore were competitors for the world... but were friends in private...they both would appreciate each other's work...who the hell you and I can compare them with a win-lose mindset...they both were legendary and the one who follows either...becomes SOMEBODY great!!! believe me...you can learn from or at least appreciate both the talents... Singing is not just a technique..it is a heartfelt expression...To just to let you know...Kishore won the best singer award for this particular song..not Rafi sahab...what do you say...!!
Its only today that I have been able to listen to all the 4 versions of this song. People are always trying to compare Rafi with KK. They both can sing well songs which are suited to their style and ability. It is very obvious that KK seems to be struggling with this sad version. This one is suited more to Rafi. But Rafi's sad version was sang by Sashi Kapoor and therefore this one had to be sang by KK. Having said this, I find the other 2 happy versions sang equally well by both. And coming back to comparing the two, KK cannot be compared with Rafi despite being a very very good and exceptional singer himself. No indian male singer in my view has done what Rafi has from the mid-forties to the time he died in 1980. His death sadly brought the end of one of the greatest and most memorable era in Indian Cinema. And his era is called by most as the GOLDEN ERA.
How/where is he struggling exactly? Genuinely interested to know. We may have our preferences, of course, and that's absolutely fine. Mukesh fans believe he is superior to both KK and Rafi, for instance.
I agree with you my friend. We all have our own opinion, likes and dislikes and sometimes prejudices to an extent. Nothing can be scientifically proven. All these differences in people's views make reading more interesting. If tomorrow we have one solid conclusion everything will become boring. When I listen to Mukesh songs I can understand why some people believe that he is the best. Among my own sibblings I have a brother who finds Talat the best, another one is for Mukesh, next one is KK and the rest for Rafi. And there are even some people who find Kumar Sanu as better than all. Can we argue with them. Yes, matter of opinion and should be respected.

I agree with you my friend. We all have our own opinion, likes and dislikes and sometimes prejudices to an extent. Nothing can be scientifically proven. All these differences in people's views make reading more interesting. If tomorrow we have one solid conclusion everything will become boring. When I listen to Mukesh songs I can understand why some people believe that he is the best. Among my own sibblings I have a brother who finds Talat the best, another one is for Mukesh, next one is KK and the rest for Rafi. And there are even some people who find Kumar Sanu as better than all. Can we argue with them. Yes, matter of opinion and should be respected.
