All of these things have been done by artists. It's dumb. Not honest. The only honest thing he is doing is revealing what he doesn't like doing or struggles with. His vibe is pretentious and petty. I thought the same thing initially, but when you have the right to refuse to serve someone and you are doing your passion its ultimately your choice. I also want to imagine this guy does his art work so frequently that he probably has done so much that he doesnt have to do the annoying tattoos anymore. I.e. one client in a year comes in and asks for a compass and a clock... he puts all of his efforts into the tattoo and makes something hes proud of, no biggie. Then a trend hits and several people are asking for clocks.. lets be honest... you are probably better off to be up front and say, nah im not spending my time making clock tattoos, i want to display my talents. I dont want several people going out showing my tattoos of clocks that i lost interest in on the third tattoo because my heart is not in it anymore and quickly deteriorates in quality because of the lack of interest. Deteriorating could be a lack of imagination about such a dull sounding tattoo. So you throw basic circles down and shade them and slap your client out the door with an average piece of dookie. Doesnt sound fun to me either

I mean, get what you want and like. Who cares if it's trendy, if you like it go for it. I'm a big "never regret a tattoo, it honored a season in your life" person. And if my artist is sick of it, then he should say "you know what? I think John over there can probably do this better than me, I think you'll be happier with him." And the client WILL be happier with someone who wants to do what they want to get. After all, it's forever on their body.

Everyone is going to be different. Artists get a shit ton of email, to them or shop. Some of it are just feelers and dont go anywhere. It's hard to even answer everything, so can see them just ignoring what they don't like. Saying no might prompt further discussion, all for a tattoo they have no intention to do. It's a time waster. I sent emails out to probably 6 or 7 artists and only got response from 2 this past year. They might have disliked the idea, or it didn't feel right, or maybe they were just too busy. A response would have been nice but I ultimately do not own their time and not every question is owed a response by people who work for themselves.

The more accepted a practice, the more it will attract those coming into it for the wrong reasons. I feel this way about medicine too. The quality of physicians, especially primary care physicians (family doctors) has hit the floor spectacularly in the last 30ish years.

I'm from Germany and here it is totally normal for a tattoo artist to tell a client when another artist would be a better fit for them. My usual tattoo artist didn't wanna do my next tattoos even though he ist perfectly capable of it because he knew that another artist would enjoy doing it more and referred me to her and it was great to work with her. I. Think its perfectly fine to not wanna do certain tattoos and just let those people get them somewhere else.

This is VERY normal when you're a regular tattoo collector. I regularly ask my artists who they recommend for work that isn't their usual style. Not every artist does every tattoo. It's completely normal to go to different artists for different reasons.
But this is not his case. There are lots of people who are uncertain about what tattoo they want, which is why 'Tattoo Flash' is a thing. And there will be people who want a tattoo which is difficult to make work where they asked for it. And there's people who want a particular style that an artist has no skill in doing. This guy is not talking about any of those cases. He's just saying "I'm sick of people asking me to tattoo fucking clocks on them" (and whatever else). Because it's not what they want that's important, just what he wants. Maybe he needs to swap people's skin for a sketch pad, and draw what he likes in his own time when nobody's paying his wages!
It's a bit of a struggle if you want to design tattoos for yourself (if you're not confident enough or the placement makes it impossible to do it on yourself) - But i really get it, every Artist i know has turned down comission work they knew would be unsatisfying, either because it will feel like it looks bad (even if the client loves it) or it's simply not worth the effort. @tsuchan - Dude, don't expect Artists to act like obedient wage slaves, especially skilled artists with a bit of fame - they either get more requests than they can work or are paid well enough to not need to do anything they don't want. In an Industry where everyone's high-skilled and self-employed, you won't find many replaceable workers to boss around.
That and he's not willing to learn what he's not good at. He straight up admitted what he's not good at and that he's not willing to try to get better. He's fine with not being good at certain tattoos and couldn't care less about getting better.
If I were him, instead of making this video(which obviously hurts his image businesswise) I would suggest, ramp up the prices on those types of tattoos and be done with it. If someone is willing to pay for it, more power to you.

Just got done with my koi sleeve last week and I love that shit. I love the meaning behind it and the Japanese art style involved. You have to understand that people getting tattoos have a different perspective than someone who does them constantly and the fatigue that comes with doing similar tattoos all the time. Get what makes you happy.

Yes and no, I feel like sometimes we maybe a bit impulsive and get something because it's in trend but someone that has your best interest in mind and has way more experience will kindly steer you away from making a mistake you can't reverse, the best thing to do I believe is to have a discussion and maybe come up with something that feels right for both. Someone that just takes your money clearly doesn't care about you, just the money.

This reminds me of why as a nail technician my sister never got goood tips or people asking for her service. Customers would pick out the color they want their nails 💅 and she would say eww no I wont polish your nail that color let me pick another color for you and would constantly make people uncomfortable and leave the nail salon sad and disappointed but some ppl were too nice to even say anything, what I’m tryin to say is let people who pay for your service get what they want unless they ask what you suggest. Most people already knew what they wanted in the first place.
Idk my clients love me. They cook for me and bring spreads of food for everyone at the shop and we hang out outside of work, have drinks, they invite me to travel with them, they travel to come to me at my shop and conventions, etc. I literally have so many ppl trying to get tattooed by me that I had to close my books last year and stop taking new appointments. I don’t think ppl in the comments understand my point. I don’t tell ppl what to get. And they don’t tell me what to do. They tell me what they want and if it’s not one of these things, I knock it out of the park for them. Sure, I choose colors, but I give options. They sit with me during the entire design process. Doing nails isn’t the same as tattooing. Not saying it’s an easy job but it’s like comparing glitter and glue scrapbooking to professional oil painting. Both are art but there ain’t no scrap books in museums.
And before anyone gets on here talking about how tattoos aren’t in museums either, I’ve been on exhibit at the phx art museum twice. Once for paintings and once for tattoos. Just throwing that out there so I don’t have to come back to this thread.

Clients already are nervous about getting a tattoo especially if it's their first time. Probably tried to research first and find the right one they really wanted only to be shamed by this fool. Yeah I'm glad you did this. I know when I walk into a tattoo shop and drop hundreds of dollars of My hard earned money for something I'm gonna wear on My body for the rest of My life, the most important thing on my mind is how much the artist enjoys doing it.
“So i’m not gonna give you this tattoo cause i’m tired of doing this design.” That’s when I would walk out the shop and take my money elsewhere, cause how are you gonna reject somebody’s idea of a tattoo, just because YOU think it’s played out or cliche? And that should be an advantage for you, because since you’ve done so many of those designs, that should let the client/customer feel like You really know what you’re doing, and make them feel comfortable that they’re gonna walk out the tattoo shop with something that makes them happy.

What I love about Poseidon tattoos being trendy is that it's so much more common to see tattoos of women (on people of all genders), it's a good counterweight to have a tattoo of a man being popular :)
I really hate tattoo artists like this. They prioritize what they like and what they feel is “fun” to do rather than take any consideration what the customer wants or what it means to them. Completely invalidating what a tattoo might mean to someone because you don’t think it’s original is super smug. The research you do on an artist is usually their style or tattooing, & I’d agree its dumb to see what style an artist does and request something opposite. Artists don’t have a list of things they “won’t do” that you see before hand. You usually ask for the piece and then they either accept or decline, in this guys case, he says he will just ignore the client and have them waiting for a response they’ll never get, which is also a dick move. So I’m really not sure where any manipulating can take place or what you mean by “Every minor little thing you need them to do”, we are just talking about getting a tattoo and getting accepted or denied based on what the artist feels like doing. I get you're tired of them, but it's my body. I actually raise monarchs for conservation, & nature has saved my life from depression. So yes, i have a monarch but it's in between a bunch of poppies in a sleeve, bcuz i'm a landscaper. Mine is realistic. It has nothing to do with popularity; it's what i love. Roses, i don't like, but that's just me. If others like them, cool.
The reason why so many people are asking for these kind of tattoos is because they ARE good tattoos. I don't think it's fair that only the "first" people to get them can have them. If someone else wants that tattoo, there is no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to get it if that's what makes them happy. There are multiple people with the same name, same car, same phone, same tattoo, same wants in life etc. We have a large population on this planet. Some things in life get repeated, and that's ok. Whether it's a repeat tattoo in the tattoo artists eyes or a never before seen tattoo, getting the tattoo they always wanted is life changing for the tattoo recipient.
@JamesWithee not saying it is the same, but it can be repeated. Art can be repeated. When there is demand, things get repeated. If people are asking you to repeat an artwork you did, it means you are doing a good job.
Butterflies are on so many ppl because the meaning is transformation. If ppl have gone through something hard then they want that. I've seen alot of them. Same exact thing with a Phoenix.
Tbf any flora or fauna has a cycle and a transformation. Why do tattoos have to mean something? Mine are very random peices but I remember exactly what was going on in my life at the time. And no one else has them. Also tattoos aren't to be understood or even explained to others. No offense just my two penny's worth
This guy strikes me a someone who thinks tattoos are just meant to be fashion statements and has no grasp of their meanings or the fact that they can mean something special or hold deeper meaning, definitely someone I would not recommend at all to anyone wanting to get a meaningful tattoo seeing as he'll probably take it and completely fuck it up by making it look "cool".

New Skool tattooers are the biggest offenders when doing koi tattoos that look like genitals. Guys good at traditional Japanese are much better at pulling it off. Other than that, there are dudes in my gym that have the "Bro-tastic starter kit" look going on. Lions, Watches, compasses, bearded dudes, and rib script.

I think that artists giving insight on tattoos they don’t enjoy doing is really valuable information because tattoo artists WANT to give you their best work and if they have to keep doing the same thing over and over and don’t like it you aren’t going to get their best work. Finding an artist isn’t a one and done thing, if you REALLY want a specific kind of tattoo it’s reasonable to expect that you might need to consult multiple artists to find the best person for the job. He’s just being honest

99% of people who get tattoos get them bc they think it looks cool. That’s why there are millions of identical flash tattoos that are considered “classic”. @@JamesWithee Just trying to lighten the mood with a different interpretation of your list. Art is a hobby of mine. And I try to look at the world in wonder with it's shapes and colors that we walk past every day and don't really look at. Like the tips of the petals on a pink thistle are blue and purple not pink. I take a lot of close up photos to remember these things. Anyway I made the list because I thought it would be funny to imagine interpreting what they asked for in a off the wall idea or the what if books influenced tattoo trends.
Realism and fantasy is different dude. If they didn’t want to go for realism style, a proper artist could just freestyle it in their own style with(or without) a basic google reference. Hell, they’re rare, but some artists can even freestyle in realism and not have it look awkward, basically like a photo.
Don't get me wrong...I can understand artists getting bored with being asked for the same tattoos. But...and this is a big but...it's not your body. It's your client's body and they are PAYING you to design and complete the tattoo THEY want. It has nothing to do with what you want. You have every right to be bored completing these tattoos. But, it's not your choice. It's your client's.
I think the big thing would be that you want an artist who will enjoy the process and likes the art they're putting on you. Sure, it's a service, but it's also living art that represents their skills out in the world. Lots of artists specialize in some of the cheesy stuff he mentions, I'm sure they would enjoy it more. Find an artist that fits.

I just think that for an artist to be this judgmental about his clients choices is kind of embarrassing. He references dumb jock types getting dumb tattoos...but then he sinks to their level by being petty and judgmental about his client's tattoo choices. I would never let this guy tattoo me. Everyone wants their tattoos for different reasons. And who the fuck is he to judge? Some people are just trying to emulate a look...others need validation, and others have deep soulful meanings behind what they want. I agree with most of these - but butterflies are amazing and will never be played out for me. Butterflies and moths are some of my favorite animals - but I also don’t have to tattoo them on people over and over again 😂
Butterfly tattoos are also symbolic for surviving suicide attempts and overcoming depression. Which I feel like a tattoo artist should know, especially when they're the people that really push the whole "a tattoo should MEAN something to you" narrative. Medusa tattoos are a symbol of surviving sexual assault, if I had an artist complain about how many Medusa tattoos they put on women, I would never go to them again. It surprises me how ignorant a lot of artists are to the symbolism behind some of the most common tattoos

And that’s valid for you, but if it doesn’t symbolize it objectively, to people everywhere, then you can’t expect everyone to know your special club’s decision as to what it means. Lions and butterflies objectively all over the world mean wild/fierce/strong etc and transformation/rebirth, respectively. The meanings your saying are very small subgroup interpretations. By definition if a person can’t figure out the meaning from the thjng itself without being told by your group, then you can’t expect other people to be from your culture and have your symbols.
As a random comparison, I absolutely love the song Canon in D. I'm a novice violinist. I started watching more violin content and found out that other classical artists HATE that song because of the number of times they have to play it, and because of how much it's requested for them to play. XD Meanwhile I'm over here wanting to get to a skill level where I get to learn how to play it because if I ever get married, I wanted to play it at my own wedding lol

Tattoo artists are the biggest babies I've learned...I just started with my tattoo journey and decided to research everything for over a year before I started and I realized so many artists are rly rude and pretentious ppl. My local high quality artist everyone goes thru was about to be my artist for my new tattoo. Then I saw him post such a d-baggy story about how "I'm so tired of doing small boring tattoos...from now on don't waste my time with it unless you're willing to pay $500 per minute." So a 40 min session is 20k? Lol...what a d-bag

as a client seeing lions, pocket watches, and roses often in the same piece is just so generic, it's always the same lion too. also religious tattoos for me are getting old, like the cross or praying hands or something with clouds. idk just getting old. get something like biblically correct angle thatd be fuckin sick!
8/10 people could have the tattoo but you could get it and it would still be unique because the meaning of tattoo has different significance to every other person. I wanted a rising phoenix tattooed on my ribs but the people kept calling it basic n mainstream. I have even watched tattoo artists calling it too overrated. The thing is I DONT CARE it is. I have fought with severe depression n anxiety for past few year and have almost ended it on multiple occasions but I survived. I dug my finger nails down, bit down, kept going day by day n survived. So I really wanted a rising phoenix as a reminder of that and my courage that kept me alive. It was like being born again from the ashes. To me it is very special. To go to an artist with such a tattoo and have them call it cliche is really not okay.
It is cliche because it's common and that's not a bad thing, you said it yourself it has a special meaning to you as it has to many people, he is saying that is a common tattoo that he wouldn't do it in a RUclips video, if you contacted other tattoo artists or even him, he probably would just say that he doesn't personally do this types of designs and would recommend you another artist assuming they are not too busy, is common to not get an answer or to be in wait lines for certain artists.
My tattooist did what are probably the most commonly done tattoos in history. In fact, “overdone” and “done to death” are understatements. A huge Japanese style Phoenix covering one arm and chest. And a huge Japanese guardian lion covering the other arm and chest. He actually seemed keen to do them though! saying it was refreshing to do just one huge character on each arm. Because they’re big, he said he really enjoyed getting into the details of each character.
It’s kind of funny seeing anyone dogging you for not wanting to do these tattoos. Anyone that collects tatts knows each artist has their “thing. “ Certain artists do certain things. Just get an artist that specializes in the tattoo you want-

Get what you want and has meaning to you. If a tattoo artist really cares about their career and really love it they will do the tattoo. If they want to make fun of people and be rude and ignore you. Then they're not worth your time or money and they might want to rethink their career. Dont ever let an artist like this be horrible to you. They dont know all but they can give advice and be kind.

Aside from doing them too often, I like your reasoning for disliking each single piece. People tend to forget how much time and effort goes into a tattoo. All of these comments are saying he’s coming off douchy. I can’t stand pretentious people or the “too cool for school” attitude and I disagree. I have zero tattoos but if I got one- I’d want the artist to be into it. There’s a million tattoo artists to choose from. Just find someone that likes your tattoo idea. I’m a hairdresser and I turn down work I am not comfortable with all the time. I don’t do wedding hair because I’m not good at at it and I want my clients to be happy and have the proper service. The only thing I would say is- instead of ignoring requests, you could just politely say: “Sorry, I don’t do those types of tattoos.” Unless he is getting hundreds of emails a day…idk…
It's interesting to hear tattoo artists from other parts of the US say which tattoos they're tired of seeing. Because a lot of these trends are non-existent where I live, just goes to show it's all relative. I've never seen a Poseidon tattoo, but I have seen enough rosary and skull tattoos to make me puke lol. Like another example, I told my bf from LA I wanted a fairy tattoo and he told me so many girls in LA have them. I've never seen a fairy tattoo in my life and none of the artists where I live have them on their portfolio. But apparently they're everywhere in SoCal.
This is an excellent point. Some of the designs he is talking about - I am aware of them, but have hardly ever seen. Trends are definitely region specific sometimes.
Hi. I just stumbled across your channel and this is the first video I’ve seen so maybe you’ve addressed this. I have tattoos myself (none of these mentioned) but I have a genuine question. If the tattoo is personal to someone, as all of mine are, why would the tattoo artist care? I get that it’s your work, your style. Could you just say “are you open to suggestions?” And switch it up for them? Or just recommend another artist that does really good work in whatever they are looking for? My shop I go to has artists with different styles. If that artist can’t or won’t do it, they set you up with someone else that will. You do beautiful work. But I genuinely think the people who want these tattoos, want them for a reason. Does an artist really care about what someone wants to put on their body? If they pay for it and it means something to them, and they like your work enough to ask for it, why would you guys make fun of people for wanting those things?
I'm sure everyone getting these tattoos have significant meaning behind them. I assume it has to do more with the fact that they're too popular that they tattoo those subjects daily. Think of it like eating the same meal every day. You'll eventually get tired of eating it and want to try something else. Same thing with tattoos when you tattoo the same concept over and over again you eventually just want to turn down those tattoos and as a artist you want to work on more creative pieces.
(This is NOT at you) As a tattoo artist we have every right to say “no I don’t want to do that “doesn’t matter what tattoo it is that’s the first thing people need to realize. 2 there’s no originality people just go to a shop show us someone else’s tattoo and want the same thing people don’t do their research when it comes to choosing a tattoo artist either I’m a watercolor tattoo artist if someone ask be to do a portrait I’m going to tell them no but I always send them to another artist who does that style. Yes it’s your body but make your body unique don’t have the same tattoos like everyone else I can tell you personally that last year I had at least 15 people ask me for the same exact palm tree and they don’t want to change it. And even on top of that when a client shows us a picture of a tattoo design they don’t want to change it they want exactly that and to me that’s the most annoying thing when people take other peoples tattoos and goes to a different artist and basically ask me to steal that tattoo artist’s work. If you like a tattoo that was done go to that artist and they can draw you a 100% original design off of the tattoo you like. I’ve met many tattoo artist that hate doing the same design over and over again. We are artist we create not copy.

Then a trend hits and several people are asking for clocks.. lets be honest... you are probably better off to be up front and say, nah im not spending my time making clock tattoos, i want to display my talents. I dont want several people going out showing my tattoos of clocks that i lost interest in on the third tattoo because my heart is not in it anymore and quickly deteriorates in quality because of the lack of interest. Deteriorating could be a lack of imagination about such a dull sounding tattoo. So you throw basic circles down and shade them and slap your client out the door with an average piece of dookie. Doesnt sound fun to me either

Artists get a shit ton of email, to them or shop. Some of it are just feelers and dont go anywhere. It's hard to even answer everything, so can see them just ignoring what they don't like. Saying no might prompt further discussion, all for a tattoo they have no intention to do. It's a time waster. I sent emails out to probably 6 or 7 artists and only got response from 2 this past year. They might have disliked the idea, or it didn't feel right, or maybe they were just too busy. A response would have been nice but I ultimately do not own their time and not every question is owed a response by people who work for themselves.

The more accepted a practice, the more it will attract those coming into it for the wrong reasons. I feel this way about medicine too. The quality of physicians, especially primary care physicians (family doctors) has hit the floor spectacularly in the last 30ish years.

I'm from Germany and here it is totally normal for a tattoo artist to tell a client when another artist would be a better fit for them. My usual tattoo artist didn't wanna do my next tattoos even though he ist perfectly capable of it because he knew that another artist would enjoy doing it more and referred me to her and it was great to work with her. I. Think its perfectly fine to not wanna do certain tattoos and just let those people get them somewhere else.

This is VERY normal when you're a regular tattoo collector. I regularly ask my artists who they recommend for work that isn't their usual style. Not every artist does every tattoo. It's completely normal to go to different artists for different reasons.
But this is not his case. There are lots of people who are uncertain about what tattoo they want, which is why 'Tattoo Flash' is a thing. And there will be people who want a tattoo which is difficult to make work where they asked for it. And there's people who want a particular style that an artist has no skill in doing. This guy is not talking about any of those cases. He's just saying "I'm sick of people asking me to tattoo fucking clocks on them" (and whatever else). Because it's not what they want that's important, just what he wants. Maybe he needs to swap people's skin for a sketch pad, and draw what he likes in his own time when nobody's paying his wages!
It's a bit of a struggle if you want to design tattoos for yourself (if you're not confident enough or the placement makes it impossible to do it on yourself) - But i really get it, every Artist i know has turned down comission work they knew would be unsatisfying, either because it will feel like it looks bad (even if the client loves it) or it's simply not worth the effort.
@tsuchan - Dude, don't expect Artists to act like obedient wage slaves, especially skilled artists with a bit of fame - they either get more requests than they can work or are paid well enough to not need to do anything they don't want. In an Industry where everyone's high-skilled and self-employed, you won't find many replaceable workers to boss around.

Just got done with my koi sleeve last week and I love that shit. I love the meaning behind it and the Japanese art style involved. You have to understand that people getting tattoos have a different perspective than someone who does them constantly and the fatigue that comes with doing similar tattoos all the time. Get what makes you happy.

Good point, however I think it's totally fair enough to refuse to do a piece if you don't want to, at the end of the day it is their work and if they don't feel confident that they will be happy that it shows their skills it's fair enough, however true don't let anyone tell you otherwise but he did say that it's okay to like them he's not bashing them he just doesn't want to tattoo these pieces anymore and mainly quite valid reasons

Yes and no, I feel like sometimes we maybe a bit impulsive and get something because it's in trend but someone that has your best interest in mind and has way more experience will kindly steer you away from making a mistake you can't reverse, the best thing to do I believe is to have a discussion and maybe come up with something that feels right for both. Someone that just takes your money clearly doesn't care about you, just the money.

This reminds me of why as a nail technician my sister never got goood tips or people asking for her service. Customers would pick out the color they want their nails 💅 and she would say eww no I wont polish your nail that color let me pick another color for you and would constantly make people uncomfortable and leave the nail salon sad and disappointed but some ppl were too nice to even say anything, what I’m tryin to say is let people who pay for your service get what they want unless they ask what you suggest. Most people already knew what they wanted in the first place.
Except nails come of in 1-4 weeks and a tattoo is forever on your body+ the pain you went through to get it in the first place…
Idk my clients love me. They cook for me and bring spreads of food for everyone at the shop and we hang out outside of work, have drinks, they invite me to travel with them, they travel to come to me at my shop and conventions, etc. I literally have so many ppl trying to get tattooed by me that I had to close my books last year and stop taking new appointments.
I don’t think ppl in the comments understand my point. I don’t tell ppl what to get. And they don’t tell me what to do. They tell me what they want and if it’s not one of these things, I knock it out of the park for them. Sure, I choose colors, but I give options. They sit with me during the entire design process.
Doing nails isn’t the same as tattooing. Not saying it’s an easy job but it’s like comparing glitter and glue scrapbooking to professional oil painting. Both are art but there ain’t no scrap books in museums.
And before anyone gets on here talking about how tattoos aren’t in museums either, I’ve been on exhibit at the phx art museum twice. Once for paintings and once for tattoos. Just throwing that out there so I don’t have to come back to this thread.

I really hate tattoo artists like this. They prioritize what they like and what they feel is “fun” to do rather than take any consideration what the customer wants or what it means to them. The research you do on an artist is usually their style or tattooing, & I’d agree its dumb to see what style an artist does and request something opposite. Artists don’t have a list of things they “won’t do” that you see before hand. You usually ask for the piece and then they either accept or decline, in this guys case, he says he will just ignore the client and have them waiting for a response they’ll never get, which is also a dick move. The reason why so many people are asking for these kind of tattoos is because they ARE good tattoos. I don't think it's fair that only the "first" people to get them can have them. If someone else wants that tattoo, there is no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to get it if that's what makes them happy. There are multiple people with the same name, same car, same phone, same tattoo, same wants in life etc. We have a large population on this planet. Some things in life get repeated, and that's ok. Whether it's a repeat tattoo in the tattoo artists eyes or a never before seen tattoo, getting the tattoo they always wanted is life changing for the tattoo recipient.

New Skool tattooers are the biggest offenders when doing koi tattoos that look like genitals. Guys good at traditional Japanese are much better at pulling it off. Other than that, there are dudes in my gym that have the "Bro-tastic starter kit" look going on. Lions, Watches, compasses, bearded dudes, and rib script.

I think that artists giving insight on tattoos they don’t enjoy doing is really valuable information because tattoo artists WANT to give you their best work and if they have to keep doing the same thing over and over and don’t like it you aren’t going to get their best work. Finding an artist isn’t a one and done thing, if you REALLY want a specific kind of tattoo it’s reasonable to expect that you might need to consult multiple artists to find the best person for the job. He’s just being honest

Art is a hobby of mine. And I try to look at the world in wonder with it's shapes and colors that we walk past every day and don't really look at. Like the tips of the petals on a pink thistle are blue and purple not pink. I take a lot of close up photos to remember these things.
Anyway I made the list because I thought it would be funny to imagine interpreting what they asked for in a off the wall idea or the what if books influenced tattoo trends.
Realism and fantasy is different dude. If they didn’t want to go for realism style, a proper artist could just freestyle it in their own style with(or without) a basic google reference. Hell, they’re rare, but some artists can even freestyle in realism and not have it look awkward, basically like a photo.

Don't get me wrong...I can understand artists getting bored with being asked for the same tattoos. But...and this is a big but...it's not your body. It's your client's body and they are PAYING you to design and complete the tattoo THEY want. It has nothing to do with what you want. You have every right to be bored completing these tattoos. But, it's not your choice. It's your client's.
I think the big thing would be that you want an artist who will enjoy the process and likes the art they're putting on you. Sure, it's a service, but it's also living art that represents their skills out in the world.
Lots of artists specialize in some of the cheesy stuff he mentions, I'm sure they would enjoy it more. Find an artist that fits.

Butterfly tattoos are also symbolic for surviving suicide attempts and overcoming depression. Which I feel like a tattoo artist should know, especially when they're the people that really push the whole "a tattoo should MEAN something to you" narrative. Medusa tattoos are a symbol of surviving sexual assault, if I had an artist complain about how many Medusa tattoos they put on women, I would never go to them again. It surprises me how ignorant a lot of artists are to the symbolism behind some of the most common tattoos

And that’s valid for you, but if it doesn’t symbolize it objectively, to people everywhere, then you can’t expect everyone to know your special club’s decision as to what it means. Lions and butterflies objectively all over the world mean wild/fierce/strong etc and transformation/rebirth, respectively. The meanings your saying are very small subgroup interpretations. By definition if a person can’t figure out the meaning from the thjng itself without being told by your group, then you can’t expect other people to be from your culture and have your symbols.
As a random comparison, I absolutely love the song Canon in D. I'm a novice violinist. I started watching more violin content and found out that other classical artists HATE that song because of the number of times they have to play it, and because of how much it's requested for them to play. 8/10 people could have the tattoo but you could get it and it would still be unique because the meaning of tattoo has different significance to every other person. I wanted a rising phoenix tattooed on my ribs but the people kept calling it basic n mainstream. I have even watched tattoo artists calling it too overrated. The thing is I DONT CARE it is. I have fought with severe depression n anxiety for past few year and have almost ended it on multiple occasions but I survived. I dug my finger nails down, bit down, kept going day by day n survived. So I really wanted a rising phoenix as a reminder of that and my courage that kept me alive. It was like being born again from the ashes. To me it is very special. To go to an artist with such a tattoo and have them call it cliche is really not okay.
It is cliche because it's common and that's not a bad thing, you said it yourself it has a special meaning to you as it has to many people, he is saying that is a common tattoo that he wouldn't do it in a RUclips video, if you contacted other tattoo artists or even him, he probably would just say that he doesn't personally do this types of designs and would recommend you another artist assuming they are not too busy, is common to not get an answer or to be in wait lines for certain artists.

My tattooist did what are probably the most commonly done tattoos in history. In fact, “overdone” and “done to death” are understatements. A huge Japanese style Phoenix covering one arm and chest. And a huge Japanese guardian lion covering the other arm and chest.
He actually seemed keen to do them though! saying it was refreshing to do just one huge character on each arm.
Because they’re big, he said he really enjoyed getting into the details of each character.

Fair enough if you’re sick of doing lion tattoos but to say there’s only 2 reference pictures in existence of lions roaring is completely absurd. There are places to look for material aside from Google: books, magazines, art galleries or this is wild, your imagination
The tattoos you have mentioned so far are all really popular tattoos. I can totally understand why you are sick of tattooing them. Aside from doing them too often, I like your reasoning for disliking each single piece. People tend to forget how much time and effort goes into a tattoo. So I am glad you’re also giving some technical critique on the pieces.😊

All of these comments are saying he’s coming off douchy. I can’t stand pretentious people or the “too cool for school” attitude and I disagree. I have zero tattoos but if I got one- I’d want the artist to be into it. There’s a million tattoo artists to choose from. Just find someone that likes your tattoo idea. I’m a hairdresser and I turn down work I am not comfortable with all the time. I don’t do wedding hair because I’m not good at at it and I want my clients to be happy and have the proper service. The only thing I would say is- instead of ignoring requests, you could just politely say: “Sorry, I don’t do those types of tattoos.” Unless he is getting hundreds of emails a day…idk…

It's interesting to hear tattoo artists from other parts of the US say which tattoos they're tired of seeing. Because a lot of these trends are non-existent where I live, just goes to show it's all relative. I've never seen a Poseidon tattoo, but I have seen enough rosary and skull tattoos to make me puke lol.
Like another example, I told my bf from LA I wanted a fairy tattoo and he told me so many girls in LA have them. I've never seen a fairy tattoo in my life and none of the artists where I live have them on their portfolio. But apparently they're everywhere in SoCal.
I’m on the north east coast I hate doing palm trees, lobsters, crabs, waves because during the summer I’m doing at least 3 of each a day.
This is an excellent point. Some of the designs he is talking about - I am aware of them, but have hardly ever seen. Trends are definitely region specific sometimes.

Hi. I just stumbled across your channel and this is the first video I’ve seen so maybe you’ve addressed this. I have tattoos myself (none of these mentioned) but I have a genuine question. If the tattoo is personal to someone, as all of mine are, why would the tattoo artist care? I get that it’s your work, your style. Could you just say “are you open to suggestions?” And switch it up for them? Or just recommend another artist that does really good work in whatever they are looking for? My shop I go to has artists with different styles. If that artist can’t or won’t do it, they set you up with someone else that will. You do beautiful work. But I genuinely think the people who want these tattoos, want them for a reason. Does an artist really care about what someone wants to put on their body? If they pay for it and it means something to them, and they like your work enough to ask for it, why would you guys make fun of people for wanting those things?
I'm sure everyone getting these tattoos have significant meaning behind them. I assume it has to do more with the fact that they're too popular that they tattoo those subjects daily. Think of it like eating the same meal every day. You'll eventually get tired of eating it and want to try something else. Same thing with tattoos when you tattoo the same concept over and over again you eventually just want to turn down those tattoos and as a artist you want to work on more creative pieces.
(This is NOT at you) As a tattoo artist we have every right to say “no I don’t want to do that “doesn’t matter what tattoo it is that’s the first thing people need to realize. 2 there’s no originality people just go to a shop show us someone else’s tattoo and want the same thing people don’t do their research when it comes to choosing a tattoo artist either I’m a watercolor tattoo artist if someone ask be to do a portrait I’m going to tell them no but I always send them to another artist who does that style. Yes it’s your body but make your body unique don’t have the same tattoos like everyone else I can tell you personally that last year I had at least 15 people ask me for the same exact palm tree and they don’t want to change it. And even on top of that when a client shows us a picture of a tattoo design they don’t want to change it they want exactly that and to me that’s the most annoying thing when people take other peoples tattoos and goes to a different artist and basically ask me to steal that tattoo artist’s work. If you like a tattoo that was done go to that artist and they can draw you a 100% original design off of the tattoo you like. I’ve met many tattoo artist that hate doing the same design over and over again. We are artist we create not copy.

These guys think they're all artist on a higher plane of existence than the rest of mortal man. I'm seeing more and more of these videos where they get offended if you ask about price, or say you want an exact picture, or dont want them to do it thier way. Scr ew these guys. Art is subjective. As a small business owner I learned long ago to listen to a customer's needs and do my best to guide wisely. This works better than to talk down or critique them in a negative way.
Let's all remember to show kindness to everyone, everywhere. It seems a lot of people took this video the wrong way. I've read through a bunch of mean comments and that's just so sad. Think before you speak. I personally just found this channel and I throughly enjoyed watching this video. I think everyone upset has these tattoos 👀👀 and it just upset not everyone is IN LOVE with them. Don't take someones opinions so seriously. Literally in this video he says a bunch of times "this is just my opinion" .
