- A political scandal is unfolding in Los Angeles, where City Council President Nury Martinez resigned from her leadership post Monday after she was caught on tape using racist language about the city's Indigenous immigrant population and referring to the Black son of another city councilmember as a "little monkey." Martinez made the comments last year during a conversation discussing redistricting with Councilmembers Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo, as well as Ron Herrera, the head of the L.A. County Federation of Labor, who also resigned from his leadership post Monday. "Her [Martinez] inciting hate against Indigenous people has a direct impact on their lives," says Odilia Romero of the L.A.-based organization Indigenous Communities in Leadership, who's calling for Martinez's resignation. "Beyond the pain and beyond the hurt is also this effort to really sideline Black power," says Melina Abdullah of Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, who is calling for the resignation of all four councilmembers, an investigation into how racism within the city council has undermined Black electoral power, and a "fundamental culture shift" in city politics.

This comes as a surprise to people in the US but I lived and worked in southern Mexico for 5 years and I saw horrific attitudes towards indigenous people, including violence toward children who were trying to sell crafts in tourist areas. Additionally, there is a very nasty attitude toward Afro-Mexicanos. These attitudes came from people like these in this video, who somehow think that because they have "Spanish" blood they are "better" than others. Very inspiring to see indigenous and Afro communities uniting to address this issue. And, I know this will sound strange to say, but what I also like is this is showing us that the real struggle is not "racial" -- it's between simply what is right and what is wrong, and between good people who build inclusive communities and other types who continue to perpetrate the ignorance that harms all us.

I think the exception would be Fresno California for the Central valley. Most POC are in blended neighborhoods and have more exposure to each other because of close proximity. A lot of times up north and down south will segregate because of long established neighborhoods and cultural differences.

Considering that in Latin American countries from Mexico to Argentina and Chile, racism is a norm and not considered as an issue at all, its an incredible achievement for California, and the US society in general. I remember continuing in college in the 80s, when the category Latino was institutionalized. Then the statistics showed the numbers of the not yet categorized group were low in education, homeownership and just then beginning to grow in corporate America. Great that categorization and investment in a group, like so many others boosts them to power. Shame to those who use their power in this way. Our categorization have worked against us; pathologizing and breeding negative characterizations instead of anything tangible. That these people joined in on that fun is horrible to know.

Just a minor correction- Oaxacans are from Mexico and are not considered Central American. People from this region are indigenous so Martinez is referring to indigenous peoples as the short dark people.

I’ve have long been annoyed by how Latinos are riding the racism tails of those who’ve truly suffered, when as an native Angeleno I’ve long known them to be as racist as they come.
