      @@NICHOLSON7777 they'd better be careful because the Chinese watch industry is all poised and ready to take over if they keep on pulling off silly stunts like this! I was all poised to get this watch until I saw the lug width, so now I think I'll just get the Rodina R500,a beautiful minimalist Bauhaus inspired design Chinese watch (a daughter brand of Sea-gull the most venerable watch company in China) with the excellent ST17 sea-gull movement and all for a grand price of $99! Btw Sea-gull also produce their own tourbillion movements in-house, although that will set you back over $3000, which is still a bargain considering you would'nt see much change out of $15,000 for a Swiss equivalent.

    It’s a wise decision for orient to make the 36mm. However, hopefully we see more dial colors on leather. I’m a fan of the gray sunburst. Had a 40mm (v3 gen2) and it sold, but loved it. It had a 21mm lug width and unfortunately I see they kept with their odd lug sizing.

    I was very lucky to find the rose gold leather one for ~$150 a few months ago. Love it!
    Extra thing you didn't mention is that these are 'Made in Japan' models (or at least mine is). Which could be meaningless but is pretty amazing for the price. To get a 'Made in Japan' watch with in-house automatic for $150 is pretty spectacular.
    Yes the 17mm is the only annoying thing. However, I have squeezed an 18mm strap into it. My issue wasn't even the 17mm, but it tapers to 14mm which looks/feels too small. But an 18 that tapers to 16 makes it feel like a men's watch.

    Great review.
    IMO, This watch with this bracelet is NOT unisex. The taper is a deal killer.
    I love the form factor. The defects are 1. It's too thick. Shave the thickness down to 12mm max by going to a plain caseback and a lower profile crystal; or just go full on with a hand winding movement. There is no excuse for a 30M WR case to be 12.5mm thick. 2. Drop the date window. This is a dress watch. 3. Change the lug width to 18mm and pair it with a SS bracelet that tapers to 16mm. 4. Make it a sunburst dial (silver, black, grey, or blue). 5. Give it a 100M WR. Raise the price $50.00. It will sell out! Offer a version with thermally blued hands for $50.00 more.

    Absolutely love the smaller size two tone, and I understand the the disappointment in 17 mm lug size, but the two tone bracelet seems pretty swanky to me. I tend to like many of Orient and Seiko's standard bracelets when they have a bit of style. Can always get a leather strap in the future to shake things up.

    so many comments about the 17mm lug width and the difficulty of finding straps for it.. 18mm straps will fit fine using the same spring bars that came with the watch.. non-tapering straps will help a lot with the look.. the real problem with the 17mm lug width is that it affects the overall look of the watch head itself as the lugs are now too near each other and more of the case is sticking out to the side.. the thickness of 12mm is not helping eithet.. they could have made it 19mm with thicker lugs.. look at the longines conquest heritage in 35mm with a 18mm lug width for example.. the proportions on that watch is just beautiful!

      Not all 18mm straps are created equal. If it measures slightly narrower (say 17.7mm) then should be OK. If it's in the region of 18.3mm it may be a struggle to fit and I'd forget about taking it off again without damaging the strap.

    Big mistake making the lug width so thin. I think they were trying to make the illusion of the watch body looking larger by having the narrow strap/bracelet. Otherwise, I'd like the smaller case size - it would fit in well with my vintage omegas and datejusts.

    I am a rookie to this world of watch collection. I was given watches by my late wife and recently, with what's going on with the pandemic, did some spring cleaning. I found about 10 watches she had given to me , which were put away after the Batteries died. Since no jewelry stores are open, I am going to attempt to replace batteries with the tool kit I just bought.
    I also just purchased a Gen 4 Bambino Blue version and love the strap swapping to spice up the looks. I do love leather strap watches.
    Just curious if dead watch batteries leak after decades of not being used??
    I love your channel and opinions on everyday affordable watches.

    • @H0kram

      Yes, batteries do leak way before that amount of years. It is highly corrosive and can ruin the quartz movement it powers.
      Once the battery is dead it is highly recommended to remove it and not let it sit there inside the watch.

    • @JohnDavis-ol7qg
      @JohnDavis-ol7qg 4 года назад

      @@H0kram I got lucky and not one leaked. Some as old as 30 years. Since my last comment, I bought a bunch of affordable watches. I have a dozen of my old watches in one 12 piece watch box and I have bought two more 12 piece watch boxes and they are almost full too. It's a very addictive hobby, but I wear my watches as an accessory to what I am wearing or what I am doing.

    I think I might be able to explain the lug width. You said yourself that perhaps they went to a 36 mm case to cater for the unisex market. I wonder if they went to the smaller lug width to make the watch more 'feminine.' I've noticed watches of this size aimed at the women's market tend to have smaller lug width and tapering bracelets. I'm an old guy of 60 and to me this is a medium sized watch. By the time I was born men's watches had grown to 33 mm but you saw guys in their 30s and 40s wearing watches as small as 30 mm which by then was the size of watch commonly given to boys. Women were still wearing 15 mm watches. I must watch your Presage videom

    When I first saw the notification for a new Long Island Watch video this morning, I was stoked. 36mm dress watch!? Yes! But then it only led to disappointment.
    A few months ago, my watch collection was mainly chronographs and dive watches measuring 42-45mm in diameter. The smallest (40mm field watch), the largest 55mm G-Shock. Then I bought two vintage watches from eBay that both are 36mm diameter and loved them. And both have 18mm lug widths.
    Unfortunately, though, the Orient would be too small I believe because I have 7-1/2 inch wrists. My search for a small, modern dress watch continues.

    The dial is perfect without the line around the date window, but why the hell did they remove the screw cap to put in a window for such a basic movement?

    Love that watch. The 17 mm strap makes me mad. Why????
    Still I would by one if I could find a reasonably-priced one in Europe.

    Good video. Measurements are a tad small I think. I think 38/39mm with 18mm strap would’ve been a better choice and more attractive to consumers.

    They can't seem to get it right. Why are they not listening their customers who've been wanting a 38-39mm bambino for years. Seriously they're becoming like Seiko, doing things their own way.

      @mrjasonrowland 4 года назад +1

      brokelos Agreed. Not a big deal, but it would be nice not to have to find an 18mm that will work or have to buy a 17mm band as most of us have tons of 18mm. I have zero 17mm straps or pins. A small pain in the rumpus. Same issue with the bambino.

    Ahhhhh. 17mm. That watch is awesome. Is the leather strap nice? It looks stiff like beef jerky. Specifically, will it soften to be wearable? (For sale 1 large 42mm blue gen 4 Bambino.) lol

  • @Watchmade
    @Watchmade 4 года назад

    On your wrist it really doesnt look like a 36mm more like a 39mm, which would be my favorite choice since I have a Tissot Visodate and the Certina DS1 Heritage coming both with 39mm. But I was very surprised when I saw it on your wrist because at the 36mm I thought ok this is the female bambino :). I have the Bambino Gen 2 with 40.5mm and it is definitely too big for a dress watch. I think the problem is that the watch looks very thin and has no bezel at all, which makes the look even bigger. Maybe thats why this 36 looks also bigger than it is.

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  4 года назад

      I think because there is no bezel.

    17mm lug widths are a nightmare. How easy would it have been to make it 18mm. 38mm with 20mm lugs would have been great.
