YeeeeHawww! Love it guys!! You are great! Brings lots of memories back. I did lots of aerobatics with my dad F. Don Pittman, Sapulpa , Oklahoma. One of his first aerobatic planes was The Pitts Special N11J. He bought “Joys Toy” from Joyce Case in 1962 and went the AAA Aerobatic Championships and won 1st place. He went on to also be a TWA captain. You guys are the greatest! Keep it up!!
Steve, HUGE fan here. Flying a sequence like that is super awesome. Congrats! Excited for the next rv update. Keep it up man. Wish i could shake your hand.
I was fortunate enough to get to fly the extra 300 over the summer. I'm going back this summer to do a full air show simulation with those guys again. This looks like A blast
@@GunganWorks Thanks for watching that. he is going to come to Dallas in a couple of months and show me all the things we should be doing and are normally rated aircraft staying within the envelope but getting out of our comfort zone. He and I have a lot in the works
Nice work Steve and Luke. You did a nice job on the sequence. This series has been great for spreading the aerobatic love. I love Luke’s parting words...”only one problem...the real aerobatic box is half that size.” Spoken like a true acro pilot.
"AEROBATICS AND ENDLESS MEAT!" Yeah. That's gonna make a nice hanger sign. Congrats on flying the entire Sportsman Sequence. Definitely NOT a zero. And man, do I LOVE hearing that engine start up.
Steve ! I was SO impressed with not only your flying during this series but your attitude and open mindedness to getting out of your comfort zone and learning something totally new. Can't WAIT to get you to an IAC aerobatic contest ! 🙃👊🏻 You're going to crush it
12:54 In R/C planes, we can cheat with "dual rates". With a switch set in one position, the control surfaces are limited to a certain amount of throw, but that throw is evenly distributed throughout the full range of stick input (called 'low rates'). Then you can flick the switch to another position, and have "high rates", where the full control surface throw is available. I always thought that if you had a 'fly by wire' system, you could easily program dual rates into a full-size competition plane.
This episode is by far one of my top favorite FlightChops videos. I could definitely feel the intensity as you executed the sequence. Awesome job Steve and congratulations!
Nice video. I also was curious about this particular mount. Normally, flight controls are carefully balanced to avoid aeroelastic flutter. What sort of analysis was done to evaluate this location of mass and drag forward of the rudder hinge line?
Nice work, Steve!! We appreciate all your hard work in getting all these multiple stories stitched together perfectly, too. Great series of vids!! I'm in love with that Extra, lol. I was laughing at the VSI during your routine: Maxes out clockwise and stays there ... then whips counterclockwise and maxes out there and stays, LOL! That gauge was pretty much useless during the routine. Was funny to watch! I can only imagine the sensations of all of that. As a passenger I'd have to work my way up to that, hahaha! THANKS for sharing all of this, Steve! This was great!!
Bit late to watching...again. But I'll still add my £0.02p worth to the comments. Wow, just wow, first attempt with no zeros is pretty impressive. This has been an excellent series and has been a major morale booster for me as under our lockdown rules I'm not even allowed to fly solo to maintain currency so being able to detach from this reality and immerse myself in yours for a time has been fantastic...please keep it up. Thanks, Mel xx
Huge well done to you! You really can see just how hard you're having to work throughout the sequence. You were grabbing at your headset mic to regain composure. Very interesting to hear how your selection of ground reference assists so much with this and therefore is almost as important as your ability to fly the sequence itself. I'm a recently passed UK PPL so I have a long way to go before anything like this! The best thing I've managed to do so far is film a fairly benign flight in a Socata TB10. This is another level. I think you did a fantastic job. Well done 👍
Working toward Spitfire training, yes. The Pandemic slowed down those plans... but meantime I am building hours in the T6 / Harvard so that I am ready when I face the Spitfire!
Sportsman in an Extra 300. Great work Steve. Just got a ipad mini. So stepping forward with tech. Prob going to run ozrunways. Plus got cloudahoy going phone and ipad. Looking forward to using this tool more. Used for a long cross country last weekend. Stopped in NZVL for a DH 100th fly in. Went for a flight as pax in a DH Dragonfly!. Got home looked at the flights on cloudahoy. Great app.
Nicely done Steve! I’m very impressed. I gotta stop up and visit Harv’s Air one day since I reside in “South Manitoba” otherwise known as North Dakota (doesn’t sound as cold that way).

I've been to a similar restaurant in Nairobi, Kenya appropriately called "The Carnivore". At the time we had such things as Ostrich, Crocodile and Zebra as well as normal meat!
Steve you mentioned at one point in this series that you had to take steps to prevent motion sickness. Could you say more about that? I struggled with it in my discovery flight and I’ve been a little worried about it. How much have you struggled with it and what do you do to manage it? Thanks! Loving this series. Such great stuff.
I’ve been lucky to not have an issue with motion sickness for the most part. That said, in the previous training with Luke in the Pitts S2B a few years ago, I got as close as I ever have to getting sick. I find the main cause is if you’re not in control for too long while the other pilot / instructor is demonstrating manoeuvres. So the key is to be in control as much as able so your brain is more connected to the cause of the sensations. It is interesting to note that Bob Hoover had major issues with motion sickness in his early days... and then we went on to arguably be the greatest pilot that ever lived - highly recommend his book “forever flying”!
@@FlightChops Thanks Steve! If Bob Hoover struggled with this than I'm in very good company. I second your recommendation for Forever Flying and I'll also recommend that everyone read Yeager (Chuck Yeager's autobiography) as a double feature. The two of them were joined at the hip at Edwards in those amazing pre-NASA days and the two books give a really interesting crossover perspective.

As someone who is familiar with model precision aerobatics (rc aircraft), this was cool to see full size. I flew intermediate / advanced in local competitions and judged f3a. Even almost 15 years later the aresti all makes sense. Never seen it full size though. I do miss the air based RC stuff. But that is the government killing the hobby and making it accessible for only professional drone pilots.
