The real William Adams lived his life out in Japan as a hatomoto with a townhouse in Edo not too far from the Shogun’s palace of Edo Castle. He did establish a brief direct trade with England, however, it wasn’t profitable for England and they existed the market to concentrate on North America leaving Japan to the Dutch. He also consulted with Date Masanune when he built an ocean going ship on the model of a Spanish galleon that traveled to Mexico to deliver a Japanese embassy to Europe.
It’s possible that Toranaga has something similar in mind, try to find some use for Blackthorn in the peaceful Edo order.
the episode is called "a dream of a dream" and blackthorne being back in england is part of that dream. his dream was threefold: fight the portuguese, end up with mariko, go back to england. her death ended part of his dream. mariko blocked his dream to continue fighting with the portuguese by making that bargain to save his life which included burning his ship, which was his means of fighting them. fuji helped him say goodbye to mariko when she deposited her son and husband's remains in the lake, and he then deposited mariko's cross (her remains) in the lake too. and it was at that point that he was able to finally speak with tokugawa honestly about his intentions, because he'd finally stopped pursuing them.
Ending up with mariko…a very very far fetched dream indeed. Can’t imagine her ever wanting to leave Japan.
The opening takes place in John's head while he's recovering from ep9 was my understanding
*Fuck it. We live, we die.”
Blackthorne’s attempted seppeku was his realization that he didn’t believe in meaningless death, regardless of what Toronaga, Mariko, and Yabushige thought of it. He decided in that moment to give both life and death as much meaning as possible.
I did piece that together after the scene with Fuji and also thought Toranaga’s scene with Yabushige when he’s explaining the Anjin’s fate may keep him in Japan. But I thought the scene was just funny.
You might've known already but I've seen some people confused by this scene. You know its a dream sequence right? He is dreaming of the future while recovering from the blast, and the episodes name is dream of a dream. Later in the episode he disposes of Mariko's cross, and he has it in the dream sequence so that shows its false. If you did know and I'm just explaining this for no reason then sorry lol
It shows what would happen if he returned back to England just mourning Mariko without being able to truly go forward in life.
Was the dream sequence also supposed to imply that’s not how he wanted to end out his days? A “normal” life and “normal” death wasn’t attractive to him after his time in Japan. I think a couple episodes prior he makes a comment about his crew seeming foreign to him.
Discarding Mariko’s cross I think was him making an active decision to not seek out the kind of life and death he dreamed about during the concussion.
No, he would have gave up his desires to leave Japan to stay with her in Japan. She would never leave and he knew it. I don't think he would want her to anyway. He would happily live here so he could be with her.
that's not his future, it's just a dream... he will never make it back to old blighty. toranaga will keep destroying the erasmus or do what he has to to keep him in Japan.
Nope, just like the real life William Adams, he never left Japan
