She sounded reasonable and very protective of her own children. She didn't enforce her lifestyle onto her children, nor let them get entitled and spoiled. Worst that she did was to groom her son into the business world, which I don't think is too bad of a thing. Not allowing him to spend money before he can work for it is also a smart thing to do. But of course this is speculation based on the video, and we will never know for sure.
7:38 "the only two things she cares about: her money and her children" in that order. Her poor son might have been able to keep his leg if she paid for a good doctor initially

Bravo! I didn't even mind the breakneck delivery because you articulate so well. I learned more about Hetty from you than anyone other source. Thanks for revealing her three dimensions.
The first time I ever heard of Hetty was from the GBWR in the 1970's. I appreciate the amount of research and the balance reporting of her and her family's life.
I will never understand the point in having vast amounts of money if you refuse to spend it. Money only has value in as much as it can be used to acquire things you want, to make your life more enjoyable. Money for money's sake seems so very empty to me.
For her and some like her, I imagine it was something of a game that she enjoyed playing more than she enjoyed possessions. So saving every dime possible to invest rather than spend it on slightly more tangible possessions was seemingly preferable to her.
Haerdalas Money for just buying fancy things doesn't seem too interesting either. Warren Buffett views money-making as a game or competition. He truly enjoys doing what he does.
money for the sake of money makes the rich richer. Money for the sake of spending as per hatty's son made him poorer over time. Note the drop in actual value of his wealth over his lifetime. However, I do agree with you. I prefer things to just money... haha
That's essentially what a wife is..you sign a contract to pay her to live with you and to pay her should she divorce you. If she loves you, she doesn't need a legal document to show it..
This is great and informative but I do take exception to 'women were expected to stay at home'. They were basically forced, it was more than an expectation and not their fault that a lot of women did stay at home.
Simon, you missed two other eccentric anecdotes about Hetty's frugality. She made the NYC public library reading room be her "office" she went to each day.She used the radiators there to heat the instant oatmeal she ate for brunch,so as to avoid utility expenses at her residence. She haggled with the dry cleaners about the cost of cleaning her outfit, insisting they only clean the lower part of her dress, which may have come into contact with the street. Apocryphal or not,it's funny.
i envision her garments being so stiff after of years of day to day encrustments of living in the squalid residencies that she maintained that she simply leaned them up against the wall at night before sleeping and they maintained their form till the next day without so much as a fracture across the the weave of the fabric

I am from a town in England called Atherstone. Today is Shrove Tuesday so we all got together for "the ball game". It's a tradition we've had for hundreds of years and everyone I know finds it either horrifically violent or historically amazing. Maybe you could do a video on this? It gets occasional national coverage here in England.
TheGuardDuck when the ball lands it's fought over then kicked again. During the last half an hour the ball stays on the ground and the competitors fight over it jumping on eachother, punching, kicking and throwing eachother around whilst hundreds of people watch.
And the working class props them up and earns them money. And then we get told we're a bunch of lazy, jealous ingrates for not loving our masters for giving us 0.000000000000000000000000001% of their daily income over a whole year.
The rich are rich for a reason. They don't work hard, they work smart; they invest in anything that'll make them money, they'll lie on anything that won't immediately land them in prison (sometimes they lie then too), and they find ways to live inbetween the law. Yes, inheriting all that money has made it easier for her, but she worked to keep it, not in the way we do, but in the way the rich do. She was taught in the way of business at a young age, what'd you expect her to do?
oooh! I wonder if she was part of the inspiration behind Mrs Brown in O. Henry's "Enchanted Profile" short story! Ridiculously rich miser woman, name is a color, loosens the purse strings for the daughter's coming out (altho in the story it was a young lady not related to her, but that's plays into O. Henry trademark twist in the end!)
I loved this video, good stuff as usual. It was amazing & really interesting my good sir! You should really consider making a "Business/Financial Moguls History" Section
I worked for my father, a successful businessman. He was an alpha male. His natural instincts were to control people. At age 14, I started working like a man. My father didn't pay me a salary. I would have to ask for spending money. I had no more than $20 at a time in the 1970's. I was too insecure to leave. Living with very little money as an adult for years affects how you think about money. At age 26, I finally got a job. It paid little. At age 36, I finally got a job that paid a middle class salary. I am 68 now. I conduct my life like I did when I had nothing. I feel guilty when I spend money on something discretionary. I tend to make myself miserable but I can't help it. For the obvious reason, I never got married.
Me: " interesting, I wonder how she became wealthy and what I can learn from her shrewd business sense" You: "she started with 75-100 million dollars".
Can you do a video on whether alcohol has any medicinal value or is it just there for for the patient? Going back before the times of prohibition recipes for colds and coughs often if not always included alcohol of some type. Even today.

Yeah...she was basically the antithesis of ladylike. No wonder people at the time thought so little of her.
