When I first listened to this song I was a little confused by the lyrical content. I couldn’t put it all together into a coherent story line. After a few listens I started to get that this was really a metaphor for one’s journey through life and how we all need to learn to navigate life’s ups and downs. Neil was so brilliant in his command of the English language and engaging the listeners to think about what is being told in the song and how it can relate to the everyday person.

From snippets I've read over the years it seems Rush were Dungeons and Dragons players in their early years. They used to spend nights on the road in their hotel rooms, and more than one of the bands who they toured with would say that these guys didnt really party or go out clubbing or anything like that. A few Molsen's and some 20 sided dice in the hotel room was their norm. You can really see the fantasy elements in their early work. Songs like By- Tor, The Necromancer, Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, Cygnus x1 and maybe I'm' missing one or two. When I first heard this album in my teens that's what I thought this song was, an adventure with ups and down, trials and treasures. It was later that I realized, as you did, that it's really an allegory about man's journey through life. Peart is deep!

Hearing this for the first time as an empty-headed teenager, only the music interested me. So many of Rush's lyrics were over my head. But 40 years and a lot of life later, the lyrics have come to life! This song covers the entirety of the life experience. I was at a low, dark "Cask of 43" place recently and as I worked out of this place, the phrase "give me back my wonder" spoke to me. I'd let my ambition nearly die! Now how did this 22-year-old drummer have this kind of perspective to describe life so well? Hope you get the story of this song. They still had some refining before they'd get really good at these concept pieces, but they figured out pretty quick!

Caress Of Steel is underrated because it's misunderstood or not understandable. I still don't know what the purpose of The Fountain Of Lamenth is. It's a mystery that I don't have the curiosity or patience to analyze beyond the lyrics themselves. It just isn't interesting, except the line "Draw another goblet from the cask of '43." That makes me think about the Philadelphia experiment.

Very astute observation about the many voices of Geddy. He was able to employ this skill masterfully in the title track of 2112, going back and forth as the protagonist and the priests. He has said that without Caress there would be no 2112. I love them both.

To me, this song is about a journey through life, with various stories from a man's life specific to him, but with metaphors with lessons everyone can use and describing his deepest thoughts and feelings in his situations, which are thoughts and feelings that we all have in our life situations. But this song comes off as like a dream that is skipping from one situation to the next and it takes a moment, even within the dream to re-orient yourself, but you just accept it or deal with it and continue (unless of course you are lucid dreaming.
I really like three of the parts of this song and I will generally listen to them separately. Caress of Steel is one of my favorite albums, but also one of the few albums that I feel quite indifferent to several songs, or parts of a song. I love The Necromancer, which is why I requested it, I'm sorry the song title caused you trepidation.
I'll never steer you wrong with Rush (which admittedly is quite hard to do anyway), as per my track record with donation requests and your reaction to my song choices. Which have all been very positive so far. All favorites of mine that I get a feeling you will love as much as I, but also all my song request for Rush have run the gambit of the styles and types of songs they recorded over the years.
And for my next Rush requests, I am once again show you another side of Rush...

It was recorded immediately after the band concluded touring in support of Fly By Night, This was a turning point delving into progressive music and it nearly lost their recording contract due the critics pounced on it with bad reviews. When Mercury management came to them and demanded they put out something with more commercial appeal the band thought screw that, we make our music as we see it... and so 2112. They placed integrity in what they had to say and their expressing it over what business men demanded.

You can hear them developing as they go from Rush, to Fly by Night to CoS and then 2112 when they lit it all up. Many years after that they had such creative songs and I enjoyed so much of what they did. More recent stuff still is good, but I don't think they took as many risks later on and I really missed that aspect.

Very ambitious for a group still at the start of their journey & although it's great I think they were over-reaching themselves a little ( and smoking a lot of weed). That said, without 'Fountain' & Caress of Steel as a whole there would never have been 2112, when they absolutely nailed the full side composition. They had learned from their mistakes & were fired up due to record company pressure for shorter, more commercial songs. This was definitely a transitional album, but their talent & ambition could never be questioned.

I feel you… I like this song (album in general) but I haven’t reached the point where I love it yet. Every time I listen to it I get closer to love, and the one thing I acknowledge is that this is a very transitional album for them.
They were all sooo young. Really it’s not dissimilar to adolescent birds getting ready to fledge and leave the nest. It’s like they were testing their wings and getting ready to fly. They had moved passed the Zeppelinesque sound of the first two albums and were quickly evolving into… well, them. The chemistry was there and coming together but wasn’t quite there yet.
Still a hugely important album for them… without this work, they wouldn’t have almost lost their recording contract, and of course that sealed their fate and bonded them together with the ideals that lasted the rest of their careers together. All for one, and we play the music WE want… not the music the label wants, or even the fans for that matter. I think that’s why the music never got flat and they never stopped trying new things.
And of course, the next album was 2112 and the floodgates were opened. I respect the hell out of them for always keeping that integrity… and that’s one of the reasons that we as fans are so loyal. Even today.
Seriously, what other band has done this?! It’s really sort of funny, because even though a huge number of fans really gave up on them after Moving Pictures, they’re still fans, they still went to the shows, they never lost the love of the band.
There… rant done. Even though I’m not a paying customer, and I’ve lost track of which songs you’ve done (a testament to you doing your homework and genuinely loving them,) if you haven’t done Between the Wheels, you should. 😂
    Great reaction, m’dear… per always.

This whole album has got to be the best of what RUSH is. At least to me. It's a masterpiece.

So... just commented on the Necromancer, and read some of the other comments on this one. I have to agree with those comments, you have to listen to this one a few times to really get the lyrics. I will go back to this... 2112 would never have happened without this album... the sounds, the storytelling, they refined all of this album (eventually) into what 2112 became! If you listen to this song and the Necromancer, and then go straight to 2112 the similarities are unmistakable!! The latter could not exist without the former... it took a couple albums in between to get there, but the similarities are just unmistakable! I have to say that the three of them are not "musicians", they were "maestros"!! Each one, individually, were beyond musicians... they made magic together, not just music! You could say that they made emotion... no one will ever match the magic that was RUSH!!!!

My absolute favorite part of this composition is part V, Bacchus Plateau. The lyrics have always intrigued me, the musical style is not something one would expect from a rock band, and Alex's solo at the end is just flat out awesome!

i agree not my favourite (but it is good)...I look at it this way...without this album and the experimentation that went on to create it, 2112 would not have been possible in my view. This was a necessary stepping stone. Thanks for all things Rush that you do!

They may put it down, but I really enjoyed this album when I first heard it.
The first listen for me for almost all Rush songs was for the music and then through repeated listens I'd catch the lyrics.

Neil was 24-ish when he wrote these lyrics. Life to death. Genius! You missed the passing swell at the end!

I always loved this series of songs, because it really is a series of songs even though it is framed as a single epic. The concept of a jouney through life's stages is wonderful. We all know when reach the 'No-one at the Bridge' phase and some people don't survive it. For some the Panacea is longer lasting and in rare cases one's companion may share the same aspirations and they can journey togerher and reach for that same elusive mountain stream, but most discover that tbey can only assist and support one another in their indivual interests and often must move on for the sake of personal growth. I am quite certain that I am at Bacchus Plateau, the end is very near, and the disillusionment with my lifes goals and relationships is all okay, the fact that I won't be around much longer is okay, it is a kind of gallows humor that passing mid-life brings on. Its like saying 'okay
Ive had my fun, I had my favorite mac n cheeze for my last meal, okay I am good to go, lets get on with it, LOL. Also my favorite section of this epic, its so happy go lucky, but lyrically, darkness approaches.. I love it.

Going in full tilt deep! What a great song! A giant slice of Rush-style prog on which to chew. To think that they were only 20 when they wrote and recorded this. This song certainly set the stage for the masterpiece that is 2112. Oh! Based on your closing words, "I'll be around." you should definitely listen to the song "Cold Fire" from the 1993 album Counterparts, which contains the very same words, albeit in a different context. Killer rock song on themes of love and relationships. It is a banger of a song chock full of great lyrical/musical hooks.

I have to wonder, as Rush usually makes you. If 2112 had come out before Caress of Steel, if it would have changed things. Would 2112 have been the down the tubes tour or would it have made them even bigger? Was the world not ready for this geekdom? Not a way in hell would you hear this or most of 2112 on top 40 radio, was not written for that. But us geeks absolutely love it and have rocked along side these three for many years.

I enterpreted "Didacts and Narpets" as; and after looking up the words, DID ACTS , acting imupulsively as in a childish mode and NARPETS/ teaching or being taught lessons as in parental guidance. The words being thrown out at the listener are all about choice and advice from an elder... The last word Dad or mom says when you argue like a blockhead... "LISTEN..." MUCH LUV TO ALL! RUSH RULES!

When this album was produced it was met with constant criticism by music critic writers giving the album bad reviews which I regard as B.S. and didn't deserve such comments. For me, I'm pleased that you featured Caress of Steel one of which I own in a trilogy including RUSH, and Fly By Night. If stranded on a deserted island those would be the only three albums I would care to only have available to listen to.

This is Far and Away my favorite Rush album Period It encompasses everything that was fresh and vital about them as young men Trying to prove themselves it is unanimously acknowledged as the warm-up album to the legendary 2112. This is their first attempt to decide long concept and it is a somewhat convoluted and murky vision... flagrantly riddled with JRR tolkien's trappings and other Dungeons & Dragons Adventures waiting to happen. The production is a bit dark and the writing a bit unfocused.... and yet there is such a Integrity to all of it.... innocent where they just had to get this urgent Vibe recorded. Captured to present to the world, and it flopped. However... without this album and the subsequent tour that was so demoralizing for them they would not have had the resolved essentially tell the record company to screw themselves when they came time to make the follow-up album. All the pressure was on and they had already done the work once before... they just needed to refine the gym and that was what gave us $212, and gave them their secured fan base who would go on to support them for another 4 decades. I love rush, I love all their albums no matter how diverse and different they ever were or how many changes they employed or how many chances they took...... Spirit of integrity was always present present. However, for me... it all starts right here
