Grace Under Pressure was my introduction to Rush, and the first album/cassette of theirs that I purchased… with paper route money. There was not a song on this album that I tempted to fast forward. While not a true “concept” album, the dark themes that run through all the songs tie it together nicely. Between the Wheels is probably my favorite single tune, but I will always love this album.
My wife and I saw 2 shows on the Grace Under Pressure tour. The Tacoma Dome in Washington state and then drove up to Vancouver, B.C. I really enjoyed your reaction to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life and times 🤘💯
I like how the lyrics allude to how our perceptions are guided by what we read, and in general, all types of media. "What you believe is what you are." So, perhaps the question for us is, what are the origins of our personal beliefs? Cool song.
Probably my favorite song from Grace Under Pressure. Really nice bass hook drives it along (how rare for Rush, haha). I think it's also a song about misconceptions. How we can think we are one thing but others see it the opposite. Like in lines like "The Soviets are the Blues.......The Reds.....are under your bed". This is actually a common theme with Peart's lyrics. The first set of lyrics he presented to Alex and Geddy was a song called Beneath, Between, Behind. That song has very similar themes to this one.
Neil saw the same as I in relation to the USA. It has become socialist/communist. Citizens are oblivious. "Beneath the noble bird, Between the proudest words, Behind the beauty cracks appear!" Peace!
@@theoriginalrushman6620 Neil loves to show the bad with the good. I'm reminded of Spirit of Radio, where the song is about his love for the radio growing up, but he still takes a couple of shots at the commercialism of it.
Always liked Geddy’s basslines in this song although the song overall is a bit eccentric in places. His outro was really kind of funky with nicely played staccato and ghost notes.
I personally think, "Between The Wheels", "The Body Electric", and "Kid Gloves" is more stimulating than this first song. That's why I'm, "mike1001001", SOS in morse code?
There is not a Rush song that I do not like and after all these years and albums I still primarily listen to them. With that said this song is not at the top of my list and honestly either is the album but it still gets played as their whole catalog is in constant rotation.
Obviously you just cannot appreciate the advancement and development of this band that was, and still great throughout their journey. Just because they developed further than their previous rock sound does not at all take away from their musical genius in the later stages. The words sad and garbage never existed in anything this group produced. If it isn't your type of music anymore, I could appreciate that comment. Sad and garbage just shows how much you have no clue on musical genius.
This song has an unusual vibe to it. The tribal drumming is really cool!

Many people like these lesser known ones too.
I like it alot, never get tired of it
You're not the only one. This is one of my guilty pleasures.i don't skip it either, it just gives me joy and reminds me of my jazz days. 🤘
I agree with you. Red Lenses is a great song!

That’s awesome I got to see them on this tour general admission, squeezed my way all the way to the front six feet away from Geddy it was amazing.
Great song from a great album.

If you don't control your mind, someone else WILL! Religion. Political Agenda. Your Supervisor at work. ETC ETC
Exactly how I feel.

I always loved how Neal would present a problem in the beginning then an answer at the end.

Great tune for the road. 😊
Hey, friends. Rush is my favorite music, EVER. Second only to Bach. Hoping I've found a like-minded community here. Be well. Robert in NYC.
I hope you did too!

Love This One!
Hey buddy I’m feel the same way and I just can’t skip past any Rush song. Infact I see red, just thinking about it lol
Heavy Metal! Heavy Metal's not dead. Yeah.
Turn it way up at 4:33.
Whoops: 4;33 on the actual song, 5:35 on the video...
All of GUP is fire!

Yes and apparently so does everyone else not well remembered, thanks for the nice comment.
Musically, it's a re-write of "Chemistry" from the Signals album, and I prefer that over this.
I love the bass line under the main verses, but it's no "Between the wheels".

I agree I didn’t like it at first
Sad garbage album from what used to be a great band.
