Vice City and Resident Evil CENSORED?! - Glasses Off

  • Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition (catchy name) is in the spotlight due to some alterations made to Vice City that some find perplexing. Resident Evil 4 VR is also in a similar situation. Are these just capitulations to the "woke mob" (whatever that means) or is there something far less interesting at play? Should important pieces of art be edited to evolve with the times? It's been a while since I've done a Glasses Off and I have some thoughts.
    MESSAGE TO AUDIENCE ►
Thanks to all of you who are somehow still here. I really do appreciate the support. The fact that so many of you are still here despite my erratic schedule is something I don't take for granted. Been going through a lot of personal stuff during this pandemic. Won't get into specifics cuz a lot of it is personal and I don't like when people overshare, but I'm trying to just get a lot done and make stuff that's worth watching. Sincerely, thank you.

I hate that we can't have bad characters do bad things anymore. When RE8 released people pointed out that Heisenberg had a Nazi dog tag or something and complained because they liked him before... He's a fucking villain, he's a bad guy, he helped take an infant child, disect her and tried to convince her father to put her back together and use her like a weapon, he's a bad guy, let him do and have done bad things, it's not like he's presented as a paragon of justice and heroism

Simple fact is crazy and bad characters can also be idolized and emulated. Look at the Joker. Not likely that Phil will be the next Joker, but "they're bad so using bad symbols on them is good" doesn't hold up. People aren't so simple as to be controlled in that way. People don't automatically see a bad person in media and think "I will not emulate this" and the Joker is a great example. People emulate bad characters for fun all the time, often in an edgy and unironic way. If a private company wants to remove a bad symbol from a character in a remake, you have no place forcing them to keep it. The original game ROM is still out there. History isn't being erased. A new release has new things a private company chose to alter, that's their freedom of speech being used.

You don't see them re-shooting the George Costanza gay panic episodes, because that would be entirely ridiculous. I think part of it is that it's much easier to change stuff within a game without it being completely obvious to the layman, whereas trying to re-edit or re-shoot Schindler's List 30 years later would stick out like a sore thumb. In the author's afterword for the 1979 edition of "Fahrenheit 451", Ray Bradbury had this interesting experience with "fans":
"About two years ago, a letter arrived from a solemn young Vassar lady telling me how much she enjoyed reading my experiment in space mythology, The Martian Chronicles. But, she added, wouldn't it be a good idea, this late in time, to rewrite the book inserting more women's characters and roles?
A few years before that, I got a certain amount of mail concerning the same Martian book, complaining that the blacks in the book were Uncle Toms and why didn't I 'do them over'?
Along about then came a note from a Southern white suggesting that I was prejudiced in favor of the blacks and that the entire story should be dropped."
The afterword then goes into great detail explaining how deeply, deeply stupid these notions were and how he would be damned if he was going to allow anyone to alter his art. He ends it with:
"In sum, do not insult me with the beheadings, finger-choppings or the lung-deflations you plan for my works. I need my head to shake or nod, my hand to wave or make into a fist, my lungs to shout or whisper with. I will not go gently onto a shelf, degutted, to become a non-book."

Our government are making websites responsible for every single comment that appears there. And if any are deemed to be "offensive" or "abusive", they'll get shut down and penalised very quickly.
My point being, PC culture was manufactured by the elite with the express purpose of shutting down any expression that runs counter to their interests. Throughout history, it's always been artists that have been targeted by the powers that be, because art can push the public's attention in important but neglected directions on a large scale. So I don't oppose this stuff out of fear of the cancel mob (although that is a factor) so much as not wanting society to take another single step down that path. While I think Chris is right about Apple being a factor, i think he needs to look deeper into the restructuring of Rockstar.
After Red Dead Redemption 2 was released, a lot of key players (those responsible for building Rockstar, writing their scripts, and shaping their overall vision) - were forced out of the company.
There has been a lot of internal memos about how the company is going to start being socially conscious and shy away from the “harmful” humor of past games.
My point is, the company has hired a lot of woke weirdos (the usually corporate hacks who were hired straight out of university) - who want to radically change the culture at the company.
I truly believe we are in for a rude awakening when we see future Rockstar titles completely toned down and stripped of the unapologetic edgy humor that defined them.

In the case of Huckleberry, the use of slurs (including a character whose name was a slur) is used in a way with anti-racist sentiments. Movies are another great example of this sort of greed, with flops making more money than hits for producers it's pretty clear the purpose of woke remakes. Comics are in a similarly crazy position, although remakes are much more common than rereleases similar to movies. Amazon as well as a few other publishers have bans on books similar to the one on apps by Apple. Really, this list could go on and on for similar situations within other media. It is an amazing book, filled with flawed and very real characters.
Poverty stricken people fighting each other for what little dignity they have in the eyes of the rich driving an innocent “lesser” to suicide while an educated person is helpless to save the innocent man despite his greatest attempts that only serve to almost get him killed too.

7:45 I know this goes beyond the point of the video, but the point of that part of Back to the Future wasn't to imply Johnny B. Goode wasn't written by Chuck Berry. It was a very quick reference to the "artist paradox", one of the many paradoxes of time travel. It revolves around the idea of going back in time and expose an artist to art they hadn't yet created to inspire them.

History being rewritten is of grave concern. History is foundational to our modern concept of who and what we are, and where we've been. Yet we cannot help but view history with our modern perspective. In fact, that's integral to understanding history, and why adapting it to not offend whatever sensibilities we have is insidious, devastating to our growth. Rewriting history reduces our rights, reduces our agency. It is the creation of foundational lies that benefit only the liars. Rewriting history spits upon, no, diarrhea dumps all over the graves of our ancestors. And most importantly, rewriting history is always at our detriment and never for our benefit.

@@alexwethington7764 No, I am saying that indie companies that want to develop games in the future that have racy content should make a censored texture version or replace problematic text, etc in the same game, and offer 2 versions of the same game. One censored version for children and other sensitive people who would otherwise be pushing to censor ALL VIDEO GAMES, and a version that appeases the primary consumer base that actually pays for the industry to exist in the first place.
The reason to do this is to disarm the public lies that will be told by mega corporations that want to censor ALL VIDEO GAMES, rather than "protect the children" like they claim. Indie companies to preemptively address this very tired, old and predictable strategy that we all see them using as an excuse to censor all video games.

  • @RetroAndChill
    @RetroAndChill 2 года назад +13

The reason why video games are more prone to this "disrespectful meadling" than other artforms is because many people don't see video games as art, but as a product to be marketed and sold. Due to this lack of respect as an artistic medium (which is stupid btw) people feel more okay with censoring it. That's actually the whole reason you can't have Nazis in German video games because games aren't currently protected by the statutes that allow for the depiction of Nazi imagery that is allowed in film and other artforms.

The no Nazi thing is also because of laws in countries like Germany. Any symbolgy the Nazis used is illegal, intended to stop the spread of Nazi ideology. It doesn't work, but governments tend to keep doing something that doesn't work, expecting results that they want.

Not to create a parasocial relationship with a RUclipsr, but Chris always remains the goto example in my mind of what a real Liberal is and should be like. I find myself at odds with so many self-identified Liberals who would absolutely take great issue with the Confederate flag being put into a video game, even in a negative context, and it makes me frequently question whether I'm still a Liberal. I still have Liberal ideals, I just don't agree with all of the culture warrior nonsense, or many of the 'solutions' to problems we have. So it's nice to see a CRG video that reinforces the idea that yes, I'm still a Liberal, it's just a bunch of self-identified Liberals are off their meds.

They basically described USSR as an empire of evil (Which it was, but not so comic). But then they remove the swastika, keep a extermination camp (But barely talk about it?), and keep the hammer and sickle? That game is just all over the place campaign wise.
