      @@shannenlibres2365 As someone who works in hospitality, I've found that bubbly pretty girls are pretty consistently underestimated and overlooked. If you're cute enough, people will also treat you like a child.
      I'm not *super* cute - and I'm also a guy - but I've had this experience, too. I look young, am incredibly bubbly and am kiiind of good looking. People my own age who assume they're older than me mistake my enthusiasm, desire to learn and general agreeability to be signs of an inexperienced, unreliable, kid. I have found through experience that the only way for me to combat this is to consistently ask vague questions about the profitability of a business, the pros and cons of individual employees, to suggest marketing initiatives, etc, so that people begin to associate me with the caricature of a 'business'-minded individual, instead.
      Even so, I still have people rushing to help me whenever there's even two people in a line at a bar, or when I'm cleaning up, or when I'm required to cover for other staff, etc, etc. And it is super frustrating.
      Being pretty will get you ahead in life in some respects, but can be a huge crutch in others. Think of how little the average trophy wife will accomplish in her lifetime. This isn't by choice. Society has conditioned us to treat pretty or cute people like they are fragile and must be protected - or shielded from stress.

    • @jaieet
      @jaieet 3 года назад +24

      @@shannenlibres2365 Listen, a cute loli-goth is probably gonna disproportionately attract a very specific demographic of guy. Maybe your parents have great imaginations and believe you'll show up one day locked in a chokehold miming that the dude turning your face blue is your soul mate. :P
      That said, you're definitely not wrong. The cuter you are, the more emotional investment people will have in keeping you safe and innocent in hopes of preserving the childlike qualities that we as a society have sort've fetishised. There is a famous Swedish(?) singer named Bjork who epitomised cutesy, ignorant, innocence in everything she did. Stalkers would send her messages, mail, find her in the street and even try to murder-suicide her in order to preserve her innocence, that they could be with a perfectly innocent Bjork in the next life.
      So I guess the moral of the story is to dress awful, take up smoking and talk in a deep voice until your parents/your stalker-murderers let you live with a little more autonomy? :P

      @ryanhoward2297 3 года назад +20

      @@jaieet I'm sorry this has been your experience ❤ To play devil's advocate for a moment though, as much as being "good looking" can lead to you being underestimated, not being "attractive" has the opposite effect. In a job interview, for example, if you're "unattractive" by the general social standard you have to go above and beyond to prove yourself; to give you an "advantage" over another candidate who is pleasing to look at. Whilst being "cute" has it's drawbacks, which you mentioned, it does give you some sort of "cushion", a luxury not afforded to a non-exceptional, "unattractive" person. That being said, I'm not trying to speak for the masses, this has just been my perceived experience. So, I guess, it's best to be "average"? . .

    Kinda depressing story, here goes: when I was 15/16 I watched this series and i totally related to Daria. Being judged really stood out to me.
    I went to a girls school in the UK, there was a muslim majority (I'm a muslim) and most of the teachers were mainly female and a fair few were muslims too.
    The sad thing was the muslim teachers would treat you better if you wore western clothes or were non muslim, acted like a western girl, were pretty like Brittany. Some girls that were muslims would wear skirts and dye their hair - which looked terrible. Most of us would either wear south Asian or Islamic clothing.
    One day this girl who thought she was all it, picked on a friend of mine. She didn't know my friend, but would love acting like a hardman. My friend was scared, so I assured her that if she tries to fight you, I'll mess her up for you. I think the girl who thought she was all it, told the teachers.
    The teachers made it out like I was doing it for attention. They basically judged me on the way I looked and summarised that because I was short, fat and dressed islamically, it meant that I was unhappy and was trying to get my five minutes of fame. When in reality I had a problem with that girl anyway. She would get favouritism from the teachers because of how she dressed and because she also acted western. Which she thought was the coolest thing ever. (Hun anyone can get a Roadman BF).
    Anyway this made me feel so crap. I was already told at home that I was worth nothing and my teachers basically cemented that in my head. I took what they said as we see you as so inferior, that you would get involved in other peoples problems because you have nothing in your life and you're an attention seeker because you're so ugly. I know you think I'm just being mad, but this school currently has a two star rating with Ofsted.

      not depressing at all.
      you don't get a lot of freedom growing up; but your friend I'm sure is glad they picked you
      even if they're gone, you can be glad you did what you thought was right, and being yourself will be the one thing that matters in a Sick Sad World.

      You were so lucky! To me, there was no better comedy than to have teachers and school administrators explain my motivations to me. It was hilarious to be told I was holding a grudge against someone I barely knew, or was jealous of someone they admired, but I saw as stupid and shallow. I remember being asked if I was acting out because I had a crush on Jennifer and I said "Who on earth is Jennifer?" The look on the teacher's face when she realized she'd thought I was pining for someone I didn't even know existed - it was hilarious.

      Actually, no, it really does not go both ways. Daria was around a LOT longer then the movie Caroline. Daria's best friend, Jane, had a very distinctive look. So, when Caroline's fake mom was drawn, they made her look like Jane (who already existed), and it would not have been the other way around. The way you phrased it, shayma lame, it makes it seem like you assume the show Daria stole the look from Caroline... which could not be possible.

    By the way... I can think of three more times you aren't judged by your appearance. Number 1 donating blood/plasma or marrow. Number 2 is being inside a buried coffin when they walk past your grave. (Unless you put your picture on it.) Number 3 is when you are nothing but ashes after cremation in an urn or otherwise. Also they can judge the headstone and the urn. So basically your 'life' of not being judged by your appearance ends after death if you're lucky and there aren't still people looking at pictures of you or your body in a viewing and still making judgments.
