- Calumet City is about 20 miles south of the Chicago Loop. It might not be as bad as a Chicago Heights or a Harvey, but at the same time it looks like what you see in most other suburban communities down this way.

South Side of Calumet City was originally swamp. My father said it was known as "Zaba Town" or "Frog Town" before the dike on the Little Calumet was built for homes. The South Side from River Oaks Blvd. to Lansing was called "Gold Coast." Newer homes built for returning GI's. I went to Hoover School, Schrum Memorial, then my Freshman, and Sophomore years at TFN. We moved away for my father's job in 1970. Calumet City still holds found memories of family and friends. It was a great place to grow up. Hope some day it flourishes again.
Frog Town was between Torrence Ave and Michigan City Road, and Pulaski Rd and Campbell Ave ...was kinda its own neighbothood surrounded by swap area, like a mote if you will..... To was by the Power lines & TFN HS

The video alone is well worth the viewing and the soundtrack is awesome. Yes watch the first video of Calumet City before this to appreciate much of better the how and why. Highly recomend the neighboring video of Dalton for the same reason. Yes this is a lot like Terre Haute In...see this video too. The Marion In. video also illustrates a contrast in local government philosophy. How and what each of us does really makes a huge difference. Thanks so much Chris for sharing your thoughts, visuals and soundtracks of your journeys which have a huge positive lasting impact on me and others.

Having lived in Calumet City from 1964-1980, the only things that haven't changed are the street names, the appearance of the houses, and Misch Bros.

Noticed alot of closed down restaurants, pawn shops, liquor stores, homes, and woods. I'd be curious to know the percentage of people who both live and work in Cal city.
The abandoned Pizza Hut on River oaks caught my eye, usually some small investor with big dreams will start a sandwich or smokehouse joint

I move to Calumet City to stay with my Mom.. Its a nice town .. nice homes as well... My Mom been out here for a long time I move out here 2016 ... this Mayor Thaddeus we have now I don't care to much for ..some of the special services are no where to be found ... we had a chance to get a casino with the last mayor .. but I guess they were waiting for the election and she lost to Thaddeus..and first he talk about affordable housing ... which don't need ..I even ask some of my neighbors...they saided same thing ..NO AFFORDABLE HOUSING .. When he won ..I knew we wasn't going get the casino
